Effect of microstructure on the nanomechanical properties of Zn 1− x Cd x Se alloys

We found that these highly ... [Show full abstract] crystalline materials possessed no stacking faults or twins in their microstructures. We observed a very marked increase in the value of H and a significant decrease in the value of E upon increasing the concentration of Cd, presumably because of an increase in the stiffness of the CdSe bond relative to that of the ZnSe bond. We observed a corresponding shrinkage of the contact-induced damage area for those films having a small grain size and a higher value of H. It appears that resistance against contact-induced damage requires a higher Cd concentration.

Investigation of oxidation profile in PMR-15 polyimide using atomic force microscope (AFM)

Nanoindentation measurements are made on thermosetting materials using cantilever deflection vs. piezoelectric scanner position behavior determined by atomic force microscope (AFM). Our ... [Show full abstract] investigations show that the force-penetration depth curves during unloading in these materials can be described accurately by a power law relationship. The results show that the accuracy of the measurements can be controlled within 7%. The above method is used to study oxidation profiles in PMR-15 polyimide. The thermo-mechanical profiles of PMR-15 indicate that the elastic modulus at the surface portion of the specimen is different from that at the interior of the material. It is also shown that there are two zones within the oxidized portion of the samples. Results confirm that the surface layer and the core material have substantially different properties.

In this study, for the first time, we employed atomic force microscopy nanoindentation measurement, a simple and nondestructive technique to quantitatively analyze the nanomechanical properties of Xuan paper. Combined with other characterizations, the property of Xuan paper under different aging times was investigated. It is expected that our results should lead to a better understanding of Xuan Paper as ancient materials with superior properties. The current results should provide useful information on the identification and protection of paper-based artifacts.

When the scribing feed was increased, the depth and roughness decreased. Increasing the furrow speed also decreased the surface roughness. The applied load is more significant than the scribing speed on the material removal rate. In addition, the Young's modulus and hardness of the polycarbonate material were 1.8 and 0.2 GPa, respectively.

[Show full abstract] organo-silicone and 4) a quasi-ceramic coating consisting of specialty silicone composition. The molecular bonding characteristics of the coatings were characterized with FTIR spectroscopy. The coatings were also tested using nanoindentation and nanoscratch methods to investigate mechanical and tribological properties. The scratched surface was investigated using scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The hybrid coating displayed superior nanomechanical properties compared to the pure polymer coating, and the coating containing high silicone levels displayed better hardness. Atomic force microscopy showed that the epoxy-based polymer coating consisted of a smooth surface that was compressed when scratched using a nanoindenter. The hybrid coating had rough surface that was damaged and partially recovered after the scratch test. The ceramer and quasi-ceramic coatings displayed brittle failure.

[Show full abstract] paper, we show that the mechanical properties of poly (polycrystalline) 3C-SiC thin films are influenced by the N-doping concentration. Furthermore, we measure the mechanical properties of 3C-SiC thin films for N-doping concentrations of 1 %, 3 % and 5 %, by using nanoindentation. For films deposited using a 1 % N-doping concentration, Young's Modulus and the hardness were measured as 270 GPa and 30 GPa, respectively. When the surface roughness of the thin films was investigated by using atomic force microscopy (AFM), the roughness of the 5 % N-doped 3C-SiC thin film was the lowest of all the films, at 15 nm.

It was also observed that shape and distribution of Si particles in the adjacent eutectic region to the primary α-Al phase of the thixo/rheo-cast products were different. By scratching surface of thixo/rheo-cast parts using a nanoindentor, friction forces and coefficients for the primary α-Al and eutectic phases in thixo-cast products were resulted to be higher than those in the rheo-cast. Nanoscratch for the thixo-cast product also revealed a rough and irregular surface compared to that for the rheo-cast, providing the evidence for the effect of eutectic entrapped by primary α-Al phase on mechanical properties.

Identification of Surface Nanobubbles and Resolving Their Size-Dependent Stiffness

However, distinct differences, which are caused not only by their different mechanical properties but also by different cantilever tip-sample interactions that are affected by the tip wettability, was observed in the successive topographic imaging with controlled scanning forces and in the nanoindentation tests, allowing for the identification of surface nanobubbles. Based on the indentation force-distance curves, we further extrapolated the stiffness of surface nanobubbles spanning over a wide range of sizes and developed a simple theoretical model to explain its size-dependence. We also demonstrate that the size-dependent stiffness can be employed to determine the surface tension of nanobubbles, which was found to be much lower than the bulk value of water.

The morphology and the nanomechanical properties of two Ni-base superalloys at length scales of < 1 mum were measured, using an atomic force microscope in combination with an add-on nanoindentation device, varying both the gamma'-precipitate volume fraction and the annealing time. The gamma'-precipitate phase was found to be harder up to 45% than the matrix phase. In both phases the hardness ... [Show full abstract] decreased with increasing indentation depth, well known as indentation size effect. For the precipitates this decrease appeared uniformly and independent of alloy composition and annealing time, whereas for the matrix the hardness decrease was less pronounced, moreover it did not appear in a uniform manner. The latter observation is explained by an influence of neighbouring precipitates as well as by a high supersaturation of gamma' and gamma (matrix) in the early stages of phase separation. The elastic moduli showed no significant difference between the two phases, no dependence on the annealing time and no depth dependence as long as the indentation size was clearly below the size of the particular phase domain but increased by up to 20%, if the size of the indented area approached the size of the measured phase domain.
