New species and record of Sporidesmium from southern China

Abstract and Figures

Four species of Sporidesmium were collected from decaying twigs in tropical and subtropical forests in southern China. Sporidesmium liquidambaris sp. nov. on Liquidambar formosana, S. antidesmatis sp. nov. on Antidesma ghaesembilla, and S. machili sp. nov. on Machilus chinensis, are described, illustrated, and compared with closely related taxa. Sporidesmium takashii is recorded as new for the Chinese mycota.

The lack of clear-cut morphological characteristics leads to frequent dispositions between genera (Almeida et al. 2014 of the type species are largely lacking, e.g. for Linkosia, Sporidesmium, and Stanjehughesia, segregating moleculardefined clades from these genera as new genera is not a responsible approach. The new species is placed in Sporidesmium following the key in Seifert et al. (2011), although its one-celled, non-extending conidiophores and growth on living leaves is not typical for the genus whose species mainly have several-septate conidiophores and occur on dead wood or plant debris (Ma et al. 2012;Wu and Zhuang 2009). Conidiophore morphology fits more to Linkosia and Stanjehughesia, but conidia in the former are considered distoseptate (Almeida et al. 2014;Conceição et al. 2016), and conidiophores are usually densely clustered in the latter (Mena-Portales et al. 2016). ...

Foliicolous fungi were collected on living plants of mycologically rarely explored plant families in the montane Quercus-Chusquea forest of western Panama. Five new species of the genera Periconiella, Pseudocercospora, Sporidesmium, and Zasmidium are morphologically described from living leaves of Myrsine coriacea (Primulaceae) and Clusia stenophylla (Clusiaceae). A species of Bomarea (B. caldasii, Alstroemeriaceae) is recorded as host for a cercosporoid fungus (Cercospora apii s.lat.) for the first time.

During a survey of freshwater fungi in Guizhou Province, China, a collection from a submerged decaying twig in Baihua Lake was identified as a new species of Sporidesmium sensu lato based on morphological characters and phylogenetic analyses of combined LSU, SSU, ITS, TEF1α and RPB2 sequence data. Phylogenetic analyses supported its placement in Sordariomycetes but the fungus grouped distant from Sporidesmium sensu stricto, and its ordinal or familial position within the class remained inconclusive. Sporidesmium guizhouense sp. nov. is introduced with an illustrated account and notes on its taxonomy, phylogeny and systematic position are provided.

A new species, Sporidesmium horizontale , is described and illustrated from specimens collected on dead branches in China. This fungus is characterized by horizontal, obclavate, 4–5-septate, versicolored conidia with short rostra.

During a north–south latitudinal survey of aquatic fungi on submerged wood and herbaceous material in streams in the Asian region, we collected several hyphomycetous taxa. This paper is part of a series where we provide illustrated accounts of these taxa and place them in a natural classification in the fungi. DNA sequence based phylogenies in recent literature have shown that Dendryphion, Sporidesmium and Torula-like species are polyphyletic in the phylum Ascomycota and their taxonomyhas been problematic due to a lack of understanding of the importance of morphological characters used to delimit taxa, as well as the lack of ex-type or reference strains. Based on multi-locus phylogenies together with morphology, we propose the novel family Distoseptisporaceae (Sordariomycetes) and three novel genera Neotorula (Pleosporales, Dothideomycetes), Distoseptispora (Sordariomycetes) and Pseudosporidesmium (Sordariomycetes). In addition, Dendryphion aquaticum, D. submersum, Distoseptispora fluminicola, D. aquatica, Kirschsteiniothelia submersa, Neotorula aquatica, Sporidesmium aquaticum, S. submersum and S. fluminicola are introduced as new species. Pseudosporidesmium knawiae comb. nov. is proposed to accommodate Sporidesmium knawiae in Sordariomycetes. The polyphyletic nature of Dendryphion, Sporidesmium and Torula-like species are partially resolved, but further sampling with fresh collections and molecular data of species are needed to obtain a natural classification.

A Reassessment of Sporidesmium (Hyphomycetes) and some Related Taxa

The generic name Endophragmia Duvernoy et Maire is considered untenable for more than 30 species that have been included in it. In many of these species conidia secede rhexolytically. and percurrent proliferations arise from the penultimate cell of the conidiophore and of the successive proliferations: most of these particular species are transferred to Endophragmiella Sutton. Two species described in Endophragmiella are excluded from this genus and two new species described. Several species of “Endophragmia” are included in or transferred to Sporidesmium, Phragmocephala, Acremoniula, Paradendryphiopsis, and a new genus Melanocephala. Brief accounts are presented on other fonn genera with Endophragmiella-like proliferations after rhexolytic conidium secession, namely Teratosperma, Arachnophora, Acrophragmis, Chaetendophragmia, and Uberispora. Brief notes are also given on genera which, for various reasons, are involved in the redispositions of species assigned to Endophragmia, namely Domingoella, Hadrosporium, Brachysporiella (syn. Edmundmasonia). Monotosporella, Acrodictys, Phragmospathula, and Acrogenospora.
