Historical and force dynamic explanations for a common ambiguity in Finnish analytical causatives

It is common in the world's languages for the same causative constructions to express two kinds of meanings: that of 'permitting' and that of 'instigating' (i.e. 'letting someone do something' and 'having someone do something'). This dual meaning is particularly common in analytical causatives. This dual nature of causative constructions may be observed in the Finnish language as well. I shall ... [Show full abstract] focus on the Finnish permissive construction (cf. Leino 2003, 2005) which, in fact, shows this duality on two different levels, both found in other languages as well: at the level of the construction as a whole, and at the level of a particular predicate used in the con- struction. First, the Finnish permissive construction only allows four or five main verbs: antaa 'give, let', käskeä 'command', sallia 'allow', and suoda 'grant', and sporadically also luvata 'promise'. As may be seen, these verbs and the whole construction mostly expresses 'letting' or 'allowing', but the notably different verb käskeä is also common in the construction. Sec- ondly, the most common verb in the construction, antaa, may express either of the two mean- ings, i.e. 'letting' or 'having someone do something'. I shall approach these cases of ambiguity from a historical perspective, on the one hand, and in terms of force dynamic patterns (cf. e.g. Talmy 1986, 1988), on the other. It will be- come apparent that there are several motivating factors behind this dual nature of this kind of causatives both cross-linguistically, due to remarkable similarities between 'letting' and 'in- stigating' as events, and in the Finnish language, due to certain historical developments in addition to the cross-linguistic motivating factors.

Abstract Explanations from neuroscience are threatening to replace those from psychology in the eyes and hands of journalists, university administrators, granting agencies, and research students. If replacement happens, much of psychology will exist only as part of the historical record. It, thus, may be useful to understand what forms of explanation are used by the two fields. Such an ... [Show full abstract] understanding may help us explain how each field can contribute to the other and why they are different. I review several templates of psychological and neuroscientific explanation, and criticize some others. I argue that psychology (and neuroscience) should continue to exist. Neuroscience is not better than psychology, and it cannot replace psychology.
