New contribution to the Turkish Dolichopodidae (Diptera) fauna and taxonomy Introduction

Authors:

Abstract

The following five species are recorded for the first time from Turkey: Dolichopus subpennatus d'Assis Fonseca, 1976; Sybistroma transcaucasica (Stackelberg, 1941); Tachytrechus genualis Loew, 1857; Diaphorus hoffmannseggi Meigen, 1830 and Diaphorus winthemi Meigen, 1824. Hercostomus varicoloris Becker, 1917 and Hercostomus caucasicus Stackelberg, 1933 are transferred to the genus Poecilobothrus Mik, 1878 (comb. nov.). A new subspecies, Poecilobothrus varicoloris flavifemoratus subsp. nov. collected in Bolu region is described. As a result, the dolichopodid list of Turkey has increased to 117 species.

In this paper faunistic data are provided for 26 species of Dolichopodinae including 16 new records and two new species as well as one new record of Sympycninae. ...
... Remarks: Recorded from Turkey by Grichanov et al. (2007). The species has been transferred from Hercostomus by Grichanov & Tonguç (2010a). ... Genus Poecilobothrus Mik, 1878 NOTES. Until now the genus Poecilobothrus, belonging to the subfamily Dolichopodinae, had long been supposed to be Mediterranean in distribution, with 16 known species [Grichanov, 2017] occurring in the West Palaearctic countries with relatively mild climate, from southern Scandinavia in the North, to North Africa and Central and Middle Asia (Iran, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan) in the South [I raise here Poecilobothrus flavifemoratus Grichanov et Tonguç, 2010, subspecies of P. varicoloris (Becker, 1917, to a species level (stat.n.)]. With new re-combinations in this paper (see below) the genus is distributed in the Russian Prymorye and all over China in addition to West Palaearctic countries, numbering totally 31 valid species. ...

Based on specimens collected from East Azerbaijan province during 2009-2011, four genera and eleven species of the family Dolichopodidae are recognized. Seven species (Diaphorus sublautus Negrobov, Dolichopus austriacus Parent, D. campestris Meigen, D. immaculatus Becher, D. subpennatus Fonseca, D. ungulatus (Linnaeus), Hercostomus phoebus Parent are recorded from Iran for the first time. Photos and an adapted key to species of the family Dolichopodidae occurring in this region are given.
... Until recently, only 21 species of long-legged flies were known from this territory (Negrobov, 1991). Later, Dolichopodidae material collected from Turkey was extensively studied in several regions, especially during recent years (Grichanov et al., 2007; Naglis, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012; Popescu-Mirceni and Pârvu, 2009; Tonguç et al., 2009; Grichanov and Tonguç, 2010a, 2010b; Tonguç et al., 2010; Tonguç and Barlas, 2011; Tonguç and Grootaert, 2013). Nevertheless, some territories of Asia Minor remain poorly investigated. ...

... During the last decade various authors contributed to a better knowledge of the Dolichopodidae of Turkey and raised the number of species to 155 2010a;Naglis, 2009;2010;2011;2012;Popescu-Mirceni and Pârvu, 2009;Tonguç et al., 2009;Barlas, 2011). Despite these recent efforts we suspect that at least twice as much species occur in this huge country with its great variety of habitats. ...

A check list and keys to genera and species of Dolichopodidae of the Caucasus and East Mediterranean are compiled. 518 species and 52 genera known in this region are included in the list, belonging to the nine subfamilies. Introductory notes concerning systematic position, ecology and morphology of Dolichopodidae and new species records for some regions are given. New synonyms and a new name are proposed. 512 species are included into the keys.
