Relativization and absolutization in the polemic on the moral principle of truthfulness: Is it permissible to lie to a malefactor to prevent a crime

Abstract

The Polemic between two groups of Russian scholars—“absolutists” and “relativists”—on Kant’s essay “On a Supposed Right to Lie from Philanthropy”, in which Kant argued that if a malefactor (a murderer) asks a person about the whereabouts of that person’s friend with intent to kill the friend, morality demands to tell the murderer the truth about the friend’s whereabouts. This article argues that, though Kantians are usually considered to be “absolutists”, and their opponents “relativists”, the Kantians perform large-scale relativization of the maxim of truthfulness and take a more conformist position towards lying than the “relativists.” The paradoxes "A Precious Friend" and "A Generalized Consequence of Kant’s Position for N Friends", characterizing inconsistency and contradictoriness of the Kantians’ point of view, have been introduced. The confrontation between the “absolutists” and the “relativists” has been interpreted as a fundamental opposition of followers of reductionism and holism, with the understanding that, in this case, the opposition is strengthened in a multiplying way by confrontation of moral values.
