Essential oil of Mentha pulegium and Mentha rotundifolia from Uruguay

Abstract

Essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation from leaves of Mentha pulegium L. and Mentha rotundifolia (L.) Huds. from Uruguay were analysed by GC-FID and GC-MS. Oxygen-containing monoterpenes were the main group of constituents in both oils. Pulegone, isomenthone and menthone were the major components in the oil of M. pulegium, whereas piperitenone oxide and (Z)-sabinene hydrate were the major ones in M. rotundifolia. Enantiomerically pure (-)-menthone, (+)-isomenthone, (+)-isomenthol, (-)-menthol and (+)-pulegone were detected by multidimensional gas chromatography in the case of M. pulegium oil.




A comparative study on essential oils extracted from Mentha suaveolens Ehrh. from Italy is reported. Two extraction procedures were investigated: hydrodistillation and steam distillation, carried out as a continuous and fractionated procedure. Fresh and dried plant material from two harvests was used. The hydrodistillation method yielded a higher amount of essential oil. The dried plant was significantly richer in essential oil per kg of starting plant material. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of 112 samples showed that the essential oils belong to the piperitenone oxide-rich chemotype. In addition, piperitenone, p-cymen-8-ol, and limonene were among the most abundant compounds in the different samples. A higher amount of piperitenone oxide was obtained by hydrodistillation, while steam distillation gave a higher percentage of piperitenone and limonene. The essential oils were characterized for their anti-Candida albicans activity; higher potency was observed for the samples rich in piperitenone oxide, with MIC values ranging from 0.39 to 0.78 mg·mL−1 (0.039% and 0.078% p/v). The results of this work provide a deep insight into the methodology of essential oil extraction and the associated chemical variability of M. suaveolens Ehrh. Some of the essential oils are potent against C. albicans and could be considered for potential use in therapy.

In recent years, natural compounds have gained attention in many fields due to theirwide-range biological activity. In particular, essential oils and their associated hydrosols are beingscreened to control plant pests, exerting antiviral, antimycotic and antiparasitic actions. They are morequickly and cheaply produced and are generally considered safer for the environment and non-targetorganisms than conventional pesticides. In this study, we report the evaluation of the biologicalactivity of two essential oils and their corresponding hydrosols obtained from Mentha suaveolensand Foeniculum vulgare in the control of zucchini yellow mosaic virus and its vector, Aphis gossypii,in Cucurbita pepo plants. The control of the virus was ascertained with treatments applied eitherconcurrently with or after virus infection; choice tests were performed to verify repellency activityagainst the aphid vector. The results indicated that treatments could decrease virus titer as measuredusing real-time RT-PCR, while the experiments on the vector showed that the compounds effectivelyrepelled aphids. The extracts were also chemically characterized using gas chromatography–massspectrometry. Context: The genus Mentha is one of the most aromatic and well-known members of the Lamiaceae family. A wide range of bioactive compounds has been reported in mints. Regarding the high economic importance of Mentha plants due to the presence of valuable metabolites, the demand for their products is growing exponentially. Therefore, to supply such demand, new strategies should be adopted to improve the yield and medicinal quality of the products. Evidence Acquisition: The current review is written based on scientific literature obtained from online databases, including Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science regarding the characteristic features of some species of the genus Mentha, their distribution and cultivation, main uses and benefits, phytochemical composition, biotechnological approaches for the production of secondary metabolites, and strategies for enhanced production of mints secondary metabolites. Results: In this article, we offer an overview of the key characteristics, natural compounds, biological properties, and medicinal uses of the genus Mentha. Current research describes biotechnological techniques such as in vitro culture methods for the production of high-value secondary metabolites. This review also highlights the strategies such as elicitation, genetic, and metabolic engineering to improve the secondary compounds production level in mint plants. Overall, it can be concluded that identifying the biosynthetic pathways, leading to the accumulation of pharmaceutically important bioactive compounds, has paved the way for developing highly productive mint plants with improved phytochemical profiles.

Despite advancements in food preservation ways, the nature of preservatives remains one of the real problems that must be taken into account for the preservation of consumer health. To cope with the problems of contamination and oxidation of foodstuffs, the chemistry development has favored the appearance and application of new chemical substances such as benzoates, sulphites, calcium chloride, acid citric etc. used as synthetic food preservatives. Subsequently, several of these synthetic preservatives have been banned in some countries because of their long-term adverse toxicological effects. The current trend of consumers seeking healthier diets is forcing them to use natural products with antimicrobial and antioxidant activities such as essential oils. These aromatic plant extracts, whose antioxidant power has been widely proven in the literature, also contain substances with very interesting biological activities, less polluting for the environment, with minor effects on the health of consumers. In this review, we have highlighted the antioxidant potential of essential oils for food quality improvement and preservation.

The cosmetics and food fields are based on the use of synthetic substances to protect their products against oxidation. However, synthetic antioxidants were reported to have negative effects on human health. The interest to develop natural antioxidants from plants has been growing in recent decades. The aim of this study was to determine the antioxidant properties of three essential oils (EOs) of M. pulegium (L.), M. suaveolens (Ehrh.) and M. spicata (L.) from the Azrou and Ifrane regions. The organoleptic characteristics, yields and physical properties were determined for the selected EOs. Their chemical compositions were identified using GC-MS; then, their antioxidant activities were evaluated using the DPPH• free radical scavenging activity and were compared with the ascorbic acid standard. The determined physicochemical parameters of dry matter and EOs demonstrated their good quality. The analysis of the EOs showed the dominance of pulegone (68.86–70.92%) and piperitenone (24.81%), piperitenone oxide (74.69–60.3%), and carvone (71.56–54.79%) and limonene (10.5–9.69%) for M. pulegium, M. suaveolens and M. spicata, respectively, from Azrou and Ifrane. Additionally, the antiradical tests demonstrated the remarkable power of these EOs, especially M. pulegium EO (IC50 = 15.93 mg/mL), which recorded the best activity compared with ascorbic acid (IC50 = 8.849 mg/mL). The obtained results indicated that these EOs could be applied as natural antioxidants in the food industry.

A fully-automated, tandem high-resolution gas chromatography (HRGC-HRGC) system is developed for multitransfer operations. The system allows quantitative transfers from the precolumn to the main column without time restriction and makes it possible to perform multiple transfers using different temperature programs for the two GC ovens and columns, which may have different diameters and different stationary phase film thicknesses. When the multidimensional system is not in use, the two GC systems may be used independently without changing the hardware. As an example of the system's efficacy, a chiral separation of some lemon essential oil components is reported.

The composition of the main constituents of the essential oil of two different chemotypes of Mentha suaveolens has been investigated during development. In the first chemotype (6) a definite increase of 1,2-epoxymen-thylacetate was observed, but piperitone oxide was always the main constituent. In the second chemotype (12) an increase of neo- and dihydrocarveol and their corresponding acetates was observed and dihydrocarvone was the main constituent. The results have been used to formulate a new biosynthetic scheme for the cyclic oxygenated monoterpenes found in essential oils of the genus Mentha.

The essential oil of Mentha pulegium L. of Cuban origin has been analyzed by a combination of GC and GC/MS. Thirty-three compounds were identified, of which neoisomenthol (20.68%) and pulegone (25.14%) were the major constituents.

The leaf essential oil of Mentha diemenica Sprengel, was produced in 1% yield based on fresh weight of leaves. The principal components of this oil were menthone (32%), neomenthyl acetate (0.0–18.3%), pulegone (25–44%), neomenthol (2.5–9.0%), menthyl acetate (2.7–5.7%), menthol (1.8–2.7%) and isomenthone (1–3%).

The volatile constituents of Mentha longifolia L. were isolated by hydrodistillation and simultaneous distillation-extraction method in the Likens-Nickerson apparatus and analyzed by GC and GC/MS. Seventy compounds were identified, 62 positively and 8 tentatively. The major constituents were piperitenone oxide (44.2% and 57.2%), 1,8-cineole (15.14% and 8.44%), myrcene (10.02% and 6.27%), limonene (4.28% and 3.45%), β-caryophyllene (1.72% and 3.34%) and germacrene D (1.51% and 4.11%).
