Authors:

Abstract and Figures

A literature-based checklist of Entolomataceae species (Agaricales, Basidiomycota) occurring in Central and South Americas is provided. In total, 271 species belonging to 13 genera are reported, representing roughly 18% of the known taxa worldwide. Here, Brazil (107 spp.) and Argentina (80 spp.) were the most representative countries. This list does not reflect the real diversity of Entolomataceae in Neotropics but covers only our limited and inconclusive knowledge. Introduction Entolomataceae Kotl. & Pouzar (Agaricales, Basidiomycota) is a very rich family which includes more than 1,500 species distributed worldwide and occurring in almost every kinds of vegetation and soil (Noordeloos 1987, Co-David 2009, Noordeloos & Gates 2012). Most of its members are saprophytic, but few ectomycorrhizal species are known (Antibus et al. 1981, Noordeloos 1984, Agerer & Waller 1993). This family has been subject of several taxonomic studies around the world, mainly: Africa (Eyssartier et al. are noteworthy. Despite of these contributions, some of the Entolomataceae species occurring in these continents are recorded on Agaricales or macrofungi regional monographs or checklists, most with limited availability. Key words agarics America diversity
Introduction
Entolomataceae Kotl. & Pouzar (Agaricales, Basidiomycota) is a very rich family which
includes more than 1,500 species distributed worldwide and occurring in almost every kinds of
vegetation and soil (Noordeloos 1987, Co-David 2009, Noordeloos & Gates 2012). Most of its
members are saprophytic, but few ectomycorrhizal species are known (Antibus et al. 1981,
Noordeloos 1984, Agerer & Waller 1993).
This family has been subject of several taxonomic studies around the world, mainly: Africa
(Eyssartier et al. 2001, Noordeloos & Hauksnecht 2007), Asia (Manimohan et al. 1995, 2006, He et
al. 2013), Europe (Noordeloos 1987, Orton 1991, Noordeloos & Morozova 2010), Oceania (Horak
1980, Gates & Noordeloos 2007, Noordeloos & Gates 2012) and North America (Baroni & Largent
1989, Horak & Desjardin 1993, Largent 1994).
For Central and South Americas, the works of Singer (1969), Horak (1978, 1982), Baroni &
Halling (1992, 2000), Baroni & Lodge (1998), Baroni et al. (2008, 2012), Largent et al. (2008),
Aime et al. (2010), Coimbra et al. (2013) and Karstedt & Capelari (2013) are noteworthy. Despite
of these contributions, some of the Entolomataceae species occurring in these continents are
recorded on Agaricales or macrofungi regional monographs or checklists, most with limited
availability.
The aim of this work is provide a complete literature-based checklist of the Entolomataceae
species recorded to Central and South America, evidencing the current panorama of taxonomic
knowledge of these fungi.

Methods
This checklist includes data gathered only on published papers and books up to 16 April
2014, not including information from websites and Masters/PhD dissertations. Taxa unidentified at
specific level were not included (e.g. Entoloma sp.) as well doubtful ones (species without and/or
unknown deposited material or referred as excluded taxa on the publications). Herbaria data were
also not included in this list (for voucher numbers, see respective references).
Despite of the clear separation of Entolomataceae species with bumped or ridged
basidiospores (without true facets) as suggested by Co-David et al. (2009), there is no consensus on
the scientific community related to the generic classification of angular-spored taxa (with true
facets). Due the high morphological variability found between species with this kind of
basidiospores, Entoloma taxa are treated here in a narrower sense, following Largent (1994). For
bumped- to ridged-spored taxa (Clitopilus spp.), the generic classification of Co-David et al. (2009)
was adopted. Some taxa labeled as Rhodocybe Maire or Rhodophyllus Quél. and without
combination in Clitopilus (Fr. ex Rabenh.) P. Kumm. and Entoloma (Fr. ex Rabenh.) P. Kumm.
respectively, were inserted in the end of the list, in a special section. Nomenclatures followed the
databases MycoBank and Index Fungorum.
Results and Discussion
Through extensive research, a total of 271 Entolomataceae species were listed to Neotropics
(Table 1) based on previously published information. If considered the estimated number of
described entolomatoid fungi to the world (<1,500 spp.), the recorded species to this
biogeographical region roughly represents 18% of the world known diversity. Despite its variety of
biomes (Amazon Forest, Atlantic Forest, Pampas, Páramos, among others) and their high diversity
and endemism rates, this value can be similar to the Entoloma richness in Europe - 217 spp. -
(Noordeloos 1987). Also noteworthy, 100 species were recorded only to the island of Tasmania,
South Australia (Noordeloos & Gates 2012), almost the same quantity known for Brazil. The total
number of recorded Entolomataceae species in Central and South Americas clearly does not reflect
its real diversity but, mainly, the lack of more specific studies in these areas.
Brazil and Argentina have, maybe due to their mycological tradition and the past efforts of
Rolf Singer and Egon Horak among others, the highest number of records (107 and 80,
respectively). Central American countries had lower numbers, but the contributions of Timothy
Baroni and colleagues are noteworthy. In contrast, nations as Belize, El Salvador, Equator,
Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname and Uruguay, as well some
Caribbean Islands are poorly studied. In most of these countries, agaricologists are virtually
inexistent; however, the scarcity of trained professional is not only a regional problem, but a
worldwide phenomenon. Therefore, the list below (Table 1) is the result of our preliminary
knowledge on Entolomataceae fungi in the the region of interest.

This study investigates morphological and genetic diversity in Rhodocybe mellea, after a new record of this species in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Phylogenetic analysis of molecular data (nrITS and nrLSU) and pairwise genetic distances, provide support for the recognition of cryptic lineages within R. mellea co-occurring in the Neotropics. We propose Rhodocybe mellea var. depressa as morphologically characterized by its depressed pileus, conspicuous sclerobasidia, small flexuous-cylindrical pseudocystidia, and a smooth cutis pileipellis. In addition, we also determine the position of nrITS sequences of some sclerotium-forming fungi collected in the same area, and confirm the genus Rhodocybe as a producer of this survival structure. Our findings provide unique information on Rhodocybe in South America, and highlight the relevance of approaches that address fine-scale diversity for fungal taxonomy.

The genus Claudopus (Entolomataceae) is characterised by its crepidotoid or pleurotoid basidiomata, a highly reduced and lateral or almost absent stipe, flesh-brown, salmon or pinkish-brown spore-print, and basidiospores that are distinctly angular in all views. Currently, ca. 20 species of Claudopus have been described worldwide. Some samples collected in the Argentinean Atlantic Forest have shown a set of characters that does not match with any of the species of Claudopus described until date. The aim of this work is to describe and illustrate a species of Claudopus new to science. Claudopus niger is distinguished from other species of Claudopus by its dark, almost black pileus surface, pinkish brown to brownish gray, ventricose lamellae; heterodiametric basidiospores, 5–7 angled (in profile view) and 8.5–11.5 × 5.5–7.5 µm in size, and a hymenium lacking cystidia. Claudopus byssisedus, the most phenetically related species and with a wide distribution in temperate and cold regions, has a paler colour and slightly larger basidiospores.
... Specifically, to the best of our knowledge, the aforementioned (see "Results" section) seven species have not been listed in the available checklists of the Italian macrofungi [15,17,40,41,43]. Worldwide check-listing studies stated that Alboleptonia sericella has been recorded in South America (e.g., in Brazil [44] and Guyana [45]), in the USA (in California [46]), and in Europe (e.g., in Germany [47] and Poland [48]). Information available on the geographical distribution of Clitocybe herbarum found in Cyprus island (Mediterranean basin) is limited [49]. ...

Three different broadleaf Mediterranean forests, each characterized by the dominance of Castanea sativa, Quercus cerris, and Fagus sylvatica, respectively, were intensively surveyed over 3 consecutive years to record a list of macrofungi. A total of 5,065 sporomata and 300 species (seven Ascomycota and 293 Basidiomycota) belonging to 18 orders, 59 families, and 117 genera were recorded. The ecology, community composition, and geographic distribution of the identified species are discussed and new records for Italy are also provided.

Following a serie of papers inventorying the agaric mycota (Agaricales) of Central and South Americas, this second publication is a literature-based checklist of the dark-spored family Strophariaceae. In total, 288 taxa belonging to 18 genera are reported here, mainly for Argentina (120 spp.) and Brazil (115 spp.), the most representative countries. This list is an effort to organize the widespread knowledge of Strophariaceae species diversity and geographical distribution, but does not reflect the real diversity of Strophariaceae from this region.

Entoloma (Agaricales, Basidiomycota) is a species-rich genus with approximately 2000 species known worldwide. In Cen- tral America, however, information about the species of this genus is sparse, despite the generally high biodiversity in this region. Recently, 124 specimens of Entoloma were collected in Panama, Chiriquí Province. In the present publication, the morphology of 20 species represented by more than one specimen is described and depicted with photographs, line drawings, and scanning electron micrographs. Molecular phylograms based on ITS or concatenated ITS and partial nc LSU rDNA sequences are provided. The taxonomic status of these species is evaluated and 17 species of Entoloma are described as new to science. Only one species could be assigned to an already known species, viz. Entoloma belouvense. Nolanea albertinae, described from Brazil, appeared similar and is combined in E. belouvense on varietal level. The identifications of two fur- ther species are uncertain. At least 30 other species, including potentially new species, cannot formally be described due to insufficient material. A preliminary key to the species of the genus Entoloma in Panama is provided. The spatial shape of the polyhedroid basidiospores of Entoloma spp. is discussed based on literature and the micrographs generated for the present study. Our re-evaluations indicate that the type of polyhedroid basidiospore and the structure of its base are not reliable as diagnostic characters for the delimitation of subgenera in Entoloma.

A new material collected and the holotype of Entoloma azureoviride were studied. The analysis of these specimens showed some discrepancies with the protologue which are discussed here. The diagnostic characters of this species are the following: fibrillose pileus, blue lamellae, cuboid spores, and abundant oleiferous hyphae in the lamellae trama. It was also observed a peculiar pseudoparenchymatous pileus trama consisting of inflated elements up to 25 µm in diam., that become more elongated towards the hymenium. A comparison of E. azureoviride with other species with blue tints in the subgenus Inocephalus and a discussion about its morphological peculiarity are provided.

Interest in the study of macrofungi has increased in Colombia during the past 50 years. Mountain forests have been the sites better explored, from the mycological point of view, providing the largest number of genera and species. So far, the country's literature reports 605 macrofungi species belonging to the Agaricales, Boletales, Cantharellales, and Russulales orders (Basidiomycota). This new list, which is a continuation of work carried out by Franco Molano and Uribe-Calle in the year 2000, includes 175 species, distributed into 73 genera: 151 belonging to Agaricales, 14 to Boletales, 9 to Russulales, and only one to Cantharellales. 31 species constitute new records for the country.

Leptonia sericella (Fr.) Barbier is proposed as the type of a new genus, Alboleptonia. Detailed descriptions of species and infraspecific taxa are provided, along with a key for their identification. To supplement classical macroscopic and microscopic observations, fresh carpophores were subjected to various macrochemical tests, and dried carpophores to simple paper chromatographic separation of 70%-ethanol-soluble compounds. Reactions to macrochemical tests and the presence of several uncommon Ehrlich-positive compounds in Alboleptonia, but not in other rhodophylloid fungi, add chemotaxonomic weight to the new genus.
