Abstract

An annotated checklist of the weevil tribe Mecysolobini (Molytinae: Curculionidae: Coleoptera) comprising 597 species under 8 genera along with their up to date nomenclature, synonyms and distribution is given. The analysis indicates that the tribe is almost exclusively tropical in distribution with 542 species known from Oriental and Ethiopian regions; of these 360 species are Oriental and 78 occur in India and the adjacent countries.

... Weevils of the tribe Mecysolobini (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Molytinae) is mainly distributed in the Oriental region, it comprises of eight genera and more than 360 species in the oriental region (Andrew and Ramamurthy 2010). Tribe Mecysolobini with beautiful ornamentations and markings, but confused at the generic and subgeneric levels. ...
... Morimoto and Kojima (2007) prepared a key to the genera of the tribe Mecysolobini and described a new subgenus and two new species. Andrew and Ramamurthy (2010) prepared a checklist of weevils of the tribe Mecysolobini under the subfamily Molytinae, also followed the eight genera established by Alonso-Zarazaga and Lyal (1999) by covering 542 species known from Oriental and Ethiopian regions. The available descriptions of the seven genera of tribe Mecysolobini are found to be inadequate without illustrations and sufficient morphometric studies and followed the available genus name in the hierarchical list of the tribe Mecysolobini (after Alonzo-Zarazaga and Lyal, 1999 andAndrew andRamamurthy 2010) were used So, the present study aims at redescriptions of the seven genera with key to the genera of tribe Mecysolobini. ...

Present study reviewed the seven genera of the weevil tribe Mecysolobini Reitter, 1913 of the subfamily Molytinae from India viz., Brahmalcidodes Pajni and Dhir, 1987; Cylindralcides Heller, 1918; Merus Giste1, 1857; Neomecyslobus Pajni and Dhir, 1987; Ornatalcides Heller, 1918; Sternuchopsis Heller, 1918 and Tuberculomecyslobus Pajni and Dhir, 1987. A modified key to the genera of tribe from India is also provided. All the taxonomic characters including the genitalia are illustrated, adding to the existing taxonomic knowledge of these taxa.

The molytinae weevil genus Alcidodes Marshall, 1939 from the Indian subcontinent is reviewed. The three known species: A. fabricii Fabricius, 1792 and A. mysticus Faust, 1894 and A. porrectirostris Marshall, 1913 are redescribed. A key to the species is also provided. All the salient taxonomic characters including the genitalia are illustrated, which will be additions to the taxonomic knowledge of this genus.

Omissions from and corrections to Alonso-Zarazaga & Lyal (1999) and Alonso-Zarazaga & Lyal (2002) are given. The following valid taxon described before 2000 was absent and is now included: Oedeuops Zhang, 1989 (fossil) in Attelabidae. A new replacement name is proposed in Brachyceridae: Brotheusini Alonso-Zarazaga and Lyal, nom. nov., for Brotheini Marshall, 1907, non Simon, 1879 (Scorpiones). New synonymies are: Mecocerini Lacordaire 1866 (= Cappadocini Alonso-Zarazaga & Lyal, 1999, syn. nov.) and Phloeophilus Schoenherr, 1833 (= Cappadox Alonso-Zarazaga & Lyal, 1999, syn. nov. = Platynorhynchus Schoenherr, 1839, syn. nov.) in Anthribidae; Cnemoxys Marshall, 1956 (= Lavabrenymus Hoffmann, 1966, syn. nov.) in Curculionidae Conoderinae. Omitted synonymies are: Otiorhynchus (Thalycrynchus) Reitter, 1912 (= Panaphilis Dejean, 1821) (removed from synonymy with Otiorhynchus s. str) and Brachysomus Schoenherr, 1823 (= Pseudoptochus Formanek, 1905) in Curculionidae Entiminae. A new combination is: Cnemoxys armatus (Hoffmann, 1966) comb. nov. from Lavabrenymus Hoffmann, 1966. New placements are: Alloschema Jordan, 1928 to Zygaenodini (from Cappadocini) (Anthribidae). Diastatotropis Lacordaire, 1866, Systellorhynchus Blanchard, 1849 and Perroudius Holloway, 1982 to Anthribinae incertae sedis (from Cappadocini) (Anthribidae). Eczesaris Pascoe, 1859 and Ethneca Pascoe, 1860 to Mecocerini (from Cappadocini) (Anthribidae). Codmius Faust, 1895 to Conoderinae Campyloscelini Corynemerina (from Baridinae Madarini Tonesiina) (Curculionidae). The subgenera Acercomecus Reitter, 1903, Gnathomecus Reitter, 1903 and Hypesamus Reitter, 1903 are wrongly listed under Esamus Chevrolat, 1880 and should be transferred to be under Megamecus Reitter, 1903.
