Using a content analysis methodology, we examined 15 peer‐reviewed articles published between 2009 and 2019 that used qualitative and mixed methods approaches to explore how college and university students experience food insecurity. Concerningly, there was limited variety in the methods employed across these articles and more discussion of methodology was needed. Despite this, our analysis of student statements in these articles yielded three common themes: (1) co‐occurring basic needs; (2) academic, physical, psychological, and social effects of food insecurity; and (3) institutional satisfaction and/or critique. We include implications for research and practice. Context and implications Rationale for the study Few qualitative studies centre students' food insecurity experiences in the United States. We examined available research to unearth commonalities across student narratives while connecting food insecurity to broader social class inequality in higher education. Why the new findings matter Our findings underscore the urgent need for additional qualitative food insecurity scholarship that foregrounds student voices. Future researchers examining food insecurity should consider: (a) the nuances of on‐campus food insecurity, (b) the impact of food insecurity on student success, and (c) the linkages between food insecurity and social class in higher education. Implications for policy makers Campus leaders and policy makers can help address campus food insecurity by building holistic wraparound systems to support the multi‐faceted needs of students facing food insecurity. To do this, policy makers and leaders must begin to understand food insecurity as more than a statistic and acknowledge the human experiences of those it affects.
... The qualitative method can be described as a set of data collection and analysis techniques that can be used to provide description, build theory and test theory (Van Maanen, 1979). It emphasizes both process-oriented and experiential and provides means for developing an understanding of complex phenomena from the point of view of those who are experiencing the phenomenon (Miles;Huberman, 1994). According to Creswell (2009), if a concept or phenomenon needs to be understood, because little research has been done on it, then it deserves a qualitative approach. ...

Purpose Although publicly listed firms in Sri Lanka have been increasingly adapting sustainability reporting into their annual reporting practices, a limited number of firms prepare sustainability reports by integrating sustainable development goals (SDGs) into reporting mechanisms. This study attempts to develop an index to monitor firms' sustainability reporting practices based on Global Reporting Institute (GRI) guidelines integrating SDGs. Design/methodology/approach This paper develops a sustainability score index using the 17 SDGs utilising the results of content analysis of corporate annual reports of a selected sample of 100 firms listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE). Principal component analysis was employed to examine the reliability of data in the developed index. Findings Findings show that the developed scoring index is efficient for evaluating the contents of the sustainability reports of Sri Lankan firms. Sustainability reporting practises with regard to the SDGs were observed to have a turbulent period from 2015 to 2019 and the SDGs 12 and 15 were identified to be mostly reported in Sri Lankan corporate sustainability reports. Social entrepreneurial ventures thrive on diverse motivations, evolving through stages. This research delved into the dynamic shifts in motivations guiding social entrepreneurs across projects and initiatives in Tanzania. Despite numerous attempts by scholars to study and theorize the motivations of social entrepreneurs, there remains a significant gap in understanding the primary focus of social entrepreneurs’ involvement in various social entrepreneurship projects. This research aimed to address this knowledge gap by exploring the motivations that drive social entrepreneurs in Tanzania to engage in social entrepreneurship ventures. The study specifically investigated the CHEMA and Gongali Model cases. The respondents consisted of 20 social entrepreneurs, with 9 from CHEMA and 11 from the Gongali Model. The findings highlight the influence of personal experiences and backgrounds in establishing innovative social enterprises, emphasizing the importance of achieving successful outcomes. The study suggests that social entrepreneurs are motivated not only by their individual needs and goals but also by the satisfaction derived from witnessing the positive impact of their work on others. Successful entrepreneurship, the study argues, requires a focus on effecting changes at both the macro and micro levels. When the intended purpose of social entrepreneurs is achieved, it serves as a significant indicator of success. The report delves deeper into how these findings influence the overall infrastructure and mindset of social entrepreneurs in Tanzania. This research introduces a novel motivational model and connects it with critical success characteristics in social innovation projects, contributing to the advancement of social entrepreneurship research. Additionally, it proposes fundamental innovations in governance and operations within the field of social entrepreneurship. From the organizational context perspective, the findings contribute to a better understanding of the factors that contribute to the formation and growth of social enterprises in Tanzania.

Visuals are among the most important elements of history textbooks. Within the framework of new approaches in history teaching and gender studies, the visuals in the history textbooks are also expected to represent women and shed light on their historical roles. In this study which was conducted with a qualitative approach and document analysis method, the visual images of women in the 10th grade history textbook published in the 2022-2023 academic year were analyzed. Content and semiotic methods were used to conduct this analysis. Findings reveal that 10th grade history textbook contains 210 visuals in total and the rate of visuals which include women is quite low compared to men images. 61.90 percent of the visuals are related to men. The visuals of women have a rate of 16.4 percent in the textbook. However, in most of the visuals, female figures are not recognizable and they do not directly provide information about women's experiences. Only 2 of women's visuals include a single woman figure and they have strong relationship with the subject texts. The other women's visuals mainly to decorate the textbook. Through visuals, it is possible to get the images of women as oppressed, nomad, soldier, warrior, social individual, queen, tyrant, Muslim, Non-Muslim, culture bearer, neighborhood dweller and patriot. However, it is not easy for students to notice women in the visuals and obtain relevant information about them. The findings of the study indicate that the visuals in the 10th grade history textbook are not used with the concern of including women's history and experiences. Visuals should be used as means to develop historical thinking skills instead of more decoration for textbooks. Students should be enabled to access information about women's history through visuals and to construct beneficial information on their own. Further research should be conducted on the integration of women's history into history textbooks and the functional use of images related to women. Textbook authors should also focus on this issue sensitively.

Background Most Japanese medical schools likely continue to rely on peer physical examination (PPE) as a tool to for teaching physical examination skills to students. However, the attitudes of medical students in Japan toward PPEs have not be identified. Therefore, we evaluated students’ attitudes toward PPE in a Japanese medical school as a preparation for developing a PPE policy tailored to the context of Japanese culture. Methods We conducted a mixed-methods study with an explanatory sequential approach, in which qualitative data were used to interpret the quantitative findings. Surveys and interviews were conducted with medical students and junior residents at a Japanese university. A total of 63 medical students and 50 junior residents responded to the questionnaire. We interviewed 16 participants to reach theoretical saturation and investigated the attitudes of medical students toward PPE and the themes emerging from the interview data, providing detailed descriptions of the quantitative findings. Results Female participants were significantly more likely than male participants to report varying degrees of resistance to being a model patient during PPE (male: 59.7%, female: 87%, p < 0.001). Most of the participants who took on the role of patients that involved undressing were males. The participants expected improvements in issues related to the guarantee of freedom to refuse to be a model patient and measures to protect confidentiality. Approximately 22% of the participants reported that they witnessed incidental findings (including variations within the normal range) in front of other students during PPE. Conclusions The findings imply that medical students expect high levels of autonomy and confidentiality when volunteering as model patients during PPE. Thus, developing a PPE policy suitable for Japanese culture may be effective in establishing a student-centered PPE environment.

Research related to the translation of novels from Arabic to English has been done but not many studies related to circumstance in novels. Circumstance is an element in a clause that accompanies a process that serves to explain the situation and condition of the process. In the novel, the circumstantial plays an important role in explaining the process in the storyline. The purpose of this study is to describe the types and forms of circumstan in the Arabic-English translation of Al-Ajnichah Al-Mutakassirah by Khalil Gibran. The analysis of circumstance is related to translation theory, namely technique, shift, method, and ideology of translation. This research belongs to descriptive qualitative research by applying a combination of SFL and translation studies. Data collection was customized to the characteristics of language research, i.e. using note-taking technique.

This study aims to compare the metaphors developed by the students of the Pre-service Mathematics Teachers (PMT) and the students of the Undergraduate Mathematics (UM) regarding the concept of mathematics and to determine how the metaphors are distributed as to the variables level of class and the department. For this purpose, hermeneutic phenomenology was used as a type of phenomenology design- one of the qualitative research methods. This study was conducted during the 2021/22 academic year with a total of 57 UM students studying at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences of a public university in the Southeastern Anatolia Region, and a total of 68 PMT students studying at the Faculty of Education at the same university. Data was collected through an interview form and analysed with content analysis. It was concluded that many metaphors are necessary in order to explain the concept of mathematics in a holistic way and that the respondents considered mathematics with its positive and negative aspects, as well as embracing it in daily life. It was also observed that the respondents’ perceptions of mathematics differ depending on the level of class and the department. For example, while the PMT students approached mathematics with a more concrete viewpoint, the UM students adopted an abstract mind-set. The reason for this result is believed to be related to the fact that the curricula applied for the PMT students contains less abstract expressions and theoretical lessons than that of the UM students, and also makes students active, offers a constructivist learning environment, and aims to train mathematics teachers rather than training them to become mathematicians.

The introduction of smart contracts has expanded the applicability of blockchains to many domains beyond finance and cryptocurrencies. Moreover, different blockchain technologies have evolved that target special requirements. As a result, in practice, often a combination of different blockchain systems is required to achieve an overall goal. However, due to the heterogeneity of blockchain protocols, the execution of distributed business transactions that span several blockchains leads to multiple interoperability and integration challenges. Therefore, in this article, we examine the domain of Cross-Chain Smart Contract Invocations (CCSCIs), which are distributed transactions that involve the invocation of smart contracts hosted on two or more blockchain systems. We conduct a systematic multi-vocal literature review to get an overview of the available CCSCI approaches. We select 20 formal literature studies and 13 high-quality gray literature studies, extract data from them, and analyze it to derive the CCSCI Classification Framework. With the help of the framework, we group the approaches into two categories and eight subcategories. The approaches differ in multiple characteristics, e.g., the mechanisms they follow, and the capabilities and transaction processing semantics they offer. Our analysis indicates that all approaches suffer from obstacles that complicate real-world adoption, such as the low support for handling heterogeneity and the need for trusted third parties.

Financial technology, Fintech, is going through a very disruptive digital transformation that is going beyond just making existing models leaner and faster. This research uses a qualitative approach to identify five models of Fintech that can utilize AI to its full potential. The five models are: (a) an incumbent in finance disaggregating and focusing on one part of the supply chain, (b) an incumbent utilizing AI in their current processes without changing their business model, (c) an incumbent extending their model to utilize AI and access new customers and data, (d) a new disrupting startup only getting involved in finance utilizing AI to gain an advantage over incumbents, and (e) an existing tech company disrupting finance by adding financial services to their portfolio of services. The five Fintech business models give an organization five proven routes to AI adoption and growth. Building trust is central to all five models. Trust is not always built at the same point in the value chain, or by the same type of organization. The trust building should usually happen where the customers are attracted and on-boarded.

This study was designed to fill two main research gaps: the need for a multidimensional perspective on the future of tourism and hospitality (T&H) labour and the lack of studies from the perspectives of key stakeholders who are representatives of tourism organisations and involved in policymaking. Therefore, it unveils the perceptions of policymakers responsible for tourism organisations in Portugal towards the future of T&H labour. Following an exploratory qualitative case study approach based on semi-structured interviews with eleven policymakers, the results illustrate that the most prominent challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic created are the damage to practical ability, finding a skilled and experienced workforce, and attracting tourism labour back to the sector. However, there are some requirements to overcome such challenges in the future. Moreover, future trends and skills for T&H employment were revealed as new working models, digitisation and robotisation, and the expected skills such as management, analytical, digital marketing, and customer behaviour analysis. Finally, technology was found to have positive and negative impacts on T&H employment. The results and implications will benefit Portugal and different destinations in understanding the dimensions of T&H labour for the future and developing future actions, strategies and policies.

Rapid urbanisation in China leads to a dramatic urban expansion and farmland-to-construction land conversion. Aiming to address the tough issue of preserving farmland for food security while providing space for urban development, the central government proposed an innovative top-down land use policy termed “Link the increase in urban construction land with the decrease in rural construction land” (The Link Policy), which calls for land exchanges in urban and rural areas through centralised resettlement and land consolidation. The implementation of the Link Policy has significantly changed urban and rural landscape while also had profound impacts on China’s rural restructuring process. This paper aims to investigate the impacts of the Link Policy implementation on rural restructuring from the perspective of rural residents. To provide Chines a holistic understanding of the policy impacts particularly for the international readers, Link Policy, as an innovative top-down land use policy in China, was first introduced comprehensively through a systematic review of the literature regarding the policy background, progress, typical practice models and the issues that emerged from previous implementation. A case study of Ezhou city in central China was followed to investigate the impacts of the Link Policy on rural restructuring based on the analysis of the feedbacks from rural residents. The results indicate that the implementation of the Link Policy accelerated the rural restructuring process in the way of economic restructuring, spatial restructuring, and social restructuring. Moreover, the related issues that appeared have also been identified and policy recommendations are provided to mitigate the impacts of the Link Policy on farmers’ rural lives.

Dixon is one of the most influential linguists in English Language Studies that proposed the idea of semantic approach in English grammatical analysis. He divided the types of verbs into six categories, including Primary A and Primary B types; and Secondary A, Secondary B, Secondary C, and Secondary D types. In Primary B types, he mentioned “attention” verbs with all of their possible syntactic properties. The “look” subtype, which is one of the subcategories of these “attention” verbs were mentioned of not allowing the existence of that-complement in the O slot. This study was initiated to illicit an extension of Dixon’s idea regarding this syntactic property of that-complement in the O slot of “look” subtype through the analysis of Javanese language structure. Based on the findings from the Javanese language corpus on SEALang Library, there were eight out of 22 samples of verbs (around 36 percent) that Dixon mentioned in the “look” subtype having that-complement in the form of “sing”, “kang”, and “ingkang” in their O slots. In the Javanese translation, these eight verbs consisted of “mirengaken”, “madosi”, “mandeng”, “ndeleng”, “mirsani”, “nginguk”, and “mriksa”. Most of the verbs appeared in the register of ngoko lugu, as this type of language records the most common utilization by the Javanese society. The findings confirmed that Dixon’s idea regarding the disallowance of that-complement in O slot of “look” subtype verbs could not be universally applied.

Background and Study Aim. The development of kinesthetic and kinetic hand praxis in older preschool children is a prerequisite for successful learning in school conditions. The purpose of this study is to identify the current state of neuromotor functionality kinesthetic and kinetic hand praxis, which affects readiness for schooling, in older preschool children with speech pathology. Material and Methods. Research methods are aimed at studying the components of neuromotor functionality: kinaesthetic and kinetic wrist praxis. To study the kinesthetic praxis of the hands, the task "Fine motility of the fingers" was used. Kinetic praxis was studied during the task "Differentiated movements of the hand". They studied the formation of object-kinetic praxis during "Performing actions with objects". Results. The results of the experimental study give a clear idea that there are significant differences in the formation of neuromotor functionality between the groups of children with logopathology and those with normotypical psychophysical development. In older preschool children with speech disorders, low abilities were found when performing tasks of kinaesthetic and kinetic praxis: wrist (fussy movements of fingers and hands; searching for the right position, the incorrect joining of fingers, hand positions; the presence of perseveration of previous movements; underdeveloped fine motility of fingers of hands; difficulties in subject activities). Children are passive during classes, they need constant support from the teacher. Conclusions. The revealed unformed state of neuromotor functionality confirms our hypothesis. Impairment of neuromotor function of kinesthetic and kinetic hand praxis is present in a significant percentage of preschoolers with speech disorders, which becomes a characteristic feature of this category of children and affects further physical, intellectual, and semiotic development.
