Networked Collaborative Learning: Social Interaction and Active Learning

Abstract

The sustainability of Networked Collaborative Learning (NCL) is a key topic of discussion amongst the institutions where it has been or may potentially be introduced. In order to determine the extent of NCLs sustainability, the added value university education may yield by adopting collaborative learning strategies must be quantified. In turn, an understanding of the implications NCL produces in terms of design and management is gained. After comparing NCL with other Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) approaches and discussing the possible reasons for adopting it, a multidimensional model for the sustainability of NCL is proposed. The model is characterized by four dimensions: pedagogical approaches, e-teacher professional development, instructional design models and valuation/assessment approaches. Each of these dimensions is examined on the basis of the author's direct experience gained through applying NCL to his university teaching. Delineates a framework for NCL sustainability. Provides an instructional design model for NC. Describes an original approach to the evaluation of collaborative learning processes.

For some time now, the sustainability of technology-enhanced learning
(TEL) has largely been regarded in economic and organisational terms.
However, the achievement of high quality in TEL depends on attention being
focused first and foremost on pedagogical considerations. Whenever these
remain in the background, the result is almost invariably the same: passive,
individual study of educational materials. Such content-driven approaches are
widely held to be cheaper, and are therefore commonly adopted. But they
almost always lead to limited-quality learning since they deprive the process
of its other crucial dimension, namely social interaction.
The social dimension is particularly vital in university teaching, where
there is a strong need for direct teacher-learner contact and the teacher has
ample scope for adopting a variety of strategies, especially interactive ones, to
support learning. However, the same could also be said of any context in
which education is not merely a ‘coaching’ process but rather one designed to
foster the acquisition of high-level knowledge and professional competencies.
Here, learning must encompass both vertical interaction with domain experts
and horizontal interaction with the group of peer learners engaged in the
course. This facilitates professional development based on the exchange of
experiences and good practices.
Fostering the social dimension of learning in TEL means treating the
network not merely as a way of distributing learning materials but more
generally as a resource that facilitates distance interaction between learner
and teacher and among students within online learning groups.
Such approaches rarely result in cost reductions for course organisers, and
in some cases actually demand higher investment. This poses the question as
to why TEL should be adopted in university education: to enhance the social
dimension of learning and thus improve instructional quality or to streamline
organisation logistics and thus reduce costs. Undoubtedly, TEL offers strong
potential in either case, but this book argues that the pedagogical
sustainability of TEL is proportional to the quality of learning it can deliver.
And high quality levels can be reached mainly by enacting active and
collaborative learning processes, especially if these hinge on intense social
interaction between learners, teachers, tutors and domain experts.
Such social interaction is often hampered by logistical and organisational
problems, especially at university level. Consequently there has been a
tendency to see network technology as a possible means for strengthening this
dimension. This potential has fuelled interest in exploring new approaches to

TEL based on the kind of active and collaborative student-centred learning
that distinguishes networked collaborative learning (NCL).
This book will seek to further our understanding of the factors, motives
and results that can lead a teacher to adopt NCL-based strategies. It will
examine the added value they offer for enhancing learning processes and the
implications they have for course design, management and evaluation.
A number of case studies will be examined that exemplify the
organisational and communicational modes entailed in NCL. These will help
to shed light on the various roles that the teacher assumes when adopting
different teaching strategies for reaching expected learning outcomes.
Through these case studies, we will also take a special look at evaluation,
an issue widely held to be one of the most problematic aspects in applying
NCL effectively. We will see how coordinated design of learning and
assessment activities can ensure that each is in tune with the other. When
appropriate methodologies are applied, technologies offer enormous
opportunities for evaluating the learning of content, the individual’s
contribution to group work and the level of cooperation that each group
applies to the tasks it is set.
While NCL is certainly not the only option open to a teacher looking to
adopt TEL, it nonetheless offers enormous potential for innovating teaching
approaches. One way it does this is by leveraging the technologies and forms
of communication that students are now accustomed to using in their daily
lives.
That said, NCL is undeniably a double-edged sword. One the one hand it
can yield high-quality learning and enhanced satisfaction on the part of
learners and teachers alike. On the other, however, it calls for careful
planning and can only be introduced with suitable preparation and training,
especially in the design and management of online learning activities.
This points to the wider issue of professional development for academic
staff – something that plays a critical role in the pedagogical sustainability of
NCL. The role of the e-teacher is not one that can be improvised; it must form
an integral part of the teacher’s overall professional growth. This does not
simply mean acquiring sufficient know-how to introduce technology in
support of habitual teaching practices. Rather, it means totally rethinking and
revising those practices.
So after this lengthy premise, we can now set off on our journey of
exploration. The hope is that it will lead to a clearer understanding of NCL,
whether or not the reader agrees with the arguments presented.

Learning outcomes sought through collaborative practices are well-studied and include improvements in student academic skills and achievement. Based on the large body of research that supports this claim, higher education faculty may seek to develop collaborative learning practices for their courses. However, this can be a challenge when a clearly defined theoretical process for transforming a traditional pedagogical approach into one that is collaborative is missing. This paper seeks to address this gap and provide practical guidance through a comprehensive approach that systematically transforms siloed learning into collaborative learning. This approach identifies three key attributes and four key competencies that transform a fragmented team of individual learners into an interdependent, self-sustaining collaborative team. A theoretical model for the process is provided, which demonstrates how this transformation occurs.

The practices specific to the structure of today's society, which is defined as the network society, are also reflected in the field of educational sciences in various forms. In the present paper, a systematic literature review has been conducted and the emerging issues have been discussed in an analytical framework in conceptual integrity to guide researchers and instructional designers. For this purpose, the BERTopic topic modeling technique, which is used to reveal hidden or abstract issues in large textual data, was use. Ten topic emerged as a result of the topic modelling. When the topics were evaluated, the following dimensions came into prominence: 1-) use of Social Network Analysis as a scientific research method in the definition of the groups involved in education, 2-) widespread adoption of this concept in matters that require solidarity, cooperation and interaction, 3-) Examining different types of relationships or roles in learning networks with a structural, managerial and relational functioning. The results of this research show that researchers need to have knowledge and skills in techniques such as Social Network Analysis in order to correctly understand a learning environment that is becoming increasingly widespread in education. The reflection of practices particular to network society is seen in the field of education in a variety of ways; thus educational praxis needs further exploration on conceptual framework. Notwithstanding the lack of a framework that disclosing a fuller understanding of the concept, network in education is widely adopt ed. Against this background, this paper seeks to contribute to exploring a widely used but conceptually unexplored context of learning as network in education. For this purpose, topic modelling, an unsupervised machine learning approach, was used to reveal hidden or abstract topics in large text collections. The topics emerging as a result of data analysis on 6307 documents were thematically organised. The emergent topics could be interpreted around three axes: 1 - ) use of network as a research method such a s social network analysis, 2 - ) solidarity happens in HIV network 3 - ) relationships or roles emerging in the network such as leadership, friendship and family. Accordingly, learning occurring in networks tends to be stimulated by the values such as solidari ty or inherited properties such as social capital. To understand this, new methodologies such as social network analysis becomes important. As for historical change of use of network in education in time, in line with the increase in the number of studies using a network perspective in the field of education, the number of publications in sub - fields has also increased. The increase in studies on teacher and PhD education can be explained by the prevailing use of learning communities as a networked learning approach.

Currently, the search history in search engines is presented in a list view of some combination of enumerated results by title, url or search query. However, this classical list view is not ideal in collaborative search environments as it does not always assist users in understanding collaborators' search history results and the project's status. We present CollabGraph, a system for graph-based summary visualisation in collaborative search learning environments. Our system differentiates from existing solutions by visualising the summary of the collaboration results in a graph and having its core Personal Knowledge Graphs (PKGs) for each user. Our research questions concentrate around the CollabGraph's usefulness, preference, and enhancement of participation of student's and teacher's feedback compared to the list view of search history results. We evaluate our approach with an online questionnaire in 6 different project-based Search as Learning (SaL) scenarios. The evaluation of users' experience indicates that the CollabGraph is useful, highly likeable and could benefit users' participation and teacher's feedback by providing more precise insights into the project status. Our approach helps users better perceive about everyone's work, and it is a highly preferable feature alongside the list view. Also, the results demonstrate that graph summary visualisations, such as the CollabGraph, are more suitable for closed-end scenarios and collaborative projects with many participants.

This dissertation of Shaty Kumar Mahato entitled Collaborative Practices in English Language Classrooms: A Narrative Inquiry submitted for the degree of Master of Philosophy in English Language Education. This study explored the way English language teachers conceptualize collaborative teaching practices and the way they engage learners in the process of learning. In practicing collaborative practices, English language teachers face challenges such as group formation and classroom management to implement the collaborative approach in practices. The steps of the appreciative inquiry approach were extracted for evaluating and developing medical education programs. Conclusion: The appreciative inquiry approach, as well as evaluating the program, promotes personal, organizational, and social development by enhancing individual and organizational capacities.

Since the outset of higher education in the Arabian Gulf about five decades ago, English-using mobile academics have been a defining feature of university campuses in the region. Within this Arabic-speaking context characterized by dynamic change, conceptions of English users have, undoubtedly, transformed over the years. This chapter begins by reviewing the range of labels attached to English users appearing in the plurilingual context of the Gulf before revealing those generated during a distinct phase of educational reforms in Abu Dhabi which promoted bi-literacy. As part of a larger exploratory study, this paper draws on qualitative data from four focus group discussions and ten ethnographic interviews with 16 Emirati students in a teacher training college. The chapter offers a critical look at the prevailing labels for English speakers in the regional and international literature bases. The findings of student perspectives of expatriate teachers highlight descriptions of linguistic profiles in terms of proficiency in Arabic rather than English, and in so doing, challenges oft-cited claims that English is the main lingua franca in the region. The chapter concludes with a brief discussion on how teacher training institutions can promote greater intercultural and linguistic awareness in the Arabian peninsula.

This chapter explores the design of a blended learning Bachelor of Midwifery programme based at Ara Institute of Canterbury (Ara) in Ōtautahi (Christchurch), Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ). Students are recruited from across the upper half of Te Waipounamu (South Island). The programme prepares students for registration as midwives and therefore must meet the standards of midwifery education set out by the Midwifery Council of New Zealand (MCNZ). In 2007, the MCNZ updated the standards which required that midwifery preregistration education providers ensured that students could access programmes in provincial and rural areas. This model was recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) to improve recruitment and retention of health workers outside of main urban areas (2010). All’interno delle università, la didattica collaborativa non ha ancora trovato uno spazio coerente con quello che a essa viene dedicato dalla ricerca pedagogica, la quale tende a evidenziarne i benefici, in termini di apprendimento e di motivazione degli studenti. In questo articolo, viene illustrato il contesto metodologico e gli obiettivi di una ricerca sull’apprendimento sociale e collaborativo, svolta nell’ambito di due insegnamenti dell’Università Telematica degli Studi IUL e vengono presentati i risultati relativamente ai questionari iniziale e finale di un insegnamento. Viene confermato l’alto gradimento, da parte degli studenti, di questa modalità, pur nel riconoscimento di un impegno maggiore richiesto rispetto allo studio individuale e l’efficacia sia in termini di motivazione che di apprendimento.

This chapter provides a further two European perspectives on blended learning. The first section is an overview of the ways in which the concept of blended solutions is interpreted in the Italian networkbased education context. Results of research carried out at some Italian Universities about various approaches to technology enhanced learning (TEL) are described which account for an increasing tendency of teachers to choose blended solutions. On the basis of interviews with 250 teachers some important blended solutions sustainability factors are analyzed pertaining to the pedagogical, professional, socio- cultural, informal dimensions as well as the content, organizational, economic and technological. In the second section of the chapter, an overview of blended and personalised learning in the United Kingdom is presented, with a critical review of some of the recent British research into the efficacy of learning management system (LMS) based blended learning approaches. Central to the chapter section is a discussion regarding the future of the LMS and how the network generation is migrating toward social networking sites and mobile technology to connect with their peers. The chapter finishes with the suggestion that personalised learning environments (PLEs) will be their preferred blended learning and communication approach.

The market for synchronous and asynchronous collaborative services and products is becoming very competitive. Although there are over 50 providers of e-learning tools and services, many problems still remain. The Intelligent Distributed Virtual Training Environment (INVITE) Project is a collaborative European project that offers a platform for synchronous e-learning. The software provides users with the functionality to support collaborative learning (CL) processes through a distributed virtual environment. This article identifies and analyses key issues in the design of CL systems, and describes the measures implemented for their support within the INVITE svstem.

Professional development at postsecondary institutions has primarily been supported through a central faculty development center. With purposive sampling, this small case study explored the ways in which teacher education faculty members were influenced to participate in decentralized professional development focused on learning to teach with WebCT. Results suggest that university faculty were influenced by both intrinsic factors (including convenience, comfort, common interests, and future purposes) and an extrinsic factor (external pressures). This research suggests that these factors also contributed to the faculty's satisfaction with the professional development. A follow-up interview explored how faculty coped with budgetary limitations and encouragement to pursue other distance education technologies.

This paper reports the design, implementation, and evaluation of a teleseminar on instructional design (ID) and computer-mediated communication (CMC) for the purposes of staff development at The University of Southern Queensland, Toowoomba, Australia. Participation was open to any staff with an involvement or interest in distance education. This study was motivated by the following research questions: Is CMC a viable medium for the professional development of staff in distance education? Does the nature of moderation of CMC-based discussions influence the nature of contributions from subscribers? Do participants use different strategies (interactive, cognitive, and metacognitive) in CMC-based discussions? To address these questions a teleseminar was instituted with a focus on the issues of ID and CMC. CMC-based moderation techniques were used to manage the discussion. Both qualitative and quantitative evaluation tools were used to measure the outcomes of the teleseminar. Results of these evaluation data show that CMC proved to be a viable medium for the professional development of staff, that the moderation strategies influenced the nature of contributions from the subscribers, and that participants used a range of strategies to manage the discussion and their participation in it.

The Journal of General Education 50.4 (2001) 314-322 University-level distance education began in the United States in 1892, when the University of Chicago, the University of Wisconsin, and The Pennsylvania State University launched their first correspondence study programs. The late 19th century was a time of great change in the United States. The Western frontier had closed in 1891. The nation was absorbing massive waves of immigrants and, at the same time, was shifting from an agrarian to an industrial economy. At Penn State, the initial focus of correspondence study was to use the still-experimental system of Rural Free Delivery to improve rural life and help secure the country's agricultural base. These were also times of significant change in American higher education. The emergence of the research university and the land-grant college movement had led to a conflict between advocates of a utilitarian curriculum, who focused on service to the community, and advocates of liberal culture, who opposed what they saw as the materialistic vocationalism of the utilitarian movement and the narrow intellectualism of research (Miller, 1988). This struggle would help shape the development of the general education movement at the end of World War I. Throughout this century, general education and distance education have been affected by, and help effect, higher education's response to the shifting currents of American society. Since the 1980s, however, their fortunes have been increasingly intertwined. In 1988, I noted three factors that would shape the future of general education: the change in standards for professional education, the emergence of the adult learner as a significant percentage of the student population, and the rise of computer-based technologies that offer new instructional tools (Miller, 1988). In the intervening decade, these three factors have not only contributed to the demand for general education, they have brought distance education into a new prominence in higher education. Access to higher education has always been central to the notion of distance education. Independent Learning, a descendant of correspondence study, originally used printed materials and mail-in assignments to provide access to geographically isolated individuals. While the model has been expanded to include broadcast and cable television, video and audio cassettes, computer-based materials, and, most recently, E-mail and the Internet, this approach still assumes an isolated, individual student who studies alone. Since the 1970s, institutions have used microwave systems, telephone conferencing, satellite, compressed interactive video, and variations on these technologies to distribute live classroom lectures to remote sites. In these cases, the students comprise a distributed classroom. However, access remains the primary benefit. Growing access to the World Wide Web has created a third approach to distance education: asynchronous learning networks. Recognizing that, in today's society, students are isolated not only by geography but also by time, asynchronous learning networks use on-line computing to allow students to study at their own time and location; the networks also permit students to work together and to have access to a wide range of information and learning resources. This new learning environment encourages active and collaborative learning with an emphasis on inquiry, independent use of information resources, case study approaches, and individual and small-group problem solving and decision making. The result, which is increasingly apparent in on-line distance education programs offered around the world, is a virtual learning community, where technology is used not only to provide access to instruction but also to create a highly interactive, resource-rich learning environment (Miller, 1995). This new capacity in distance education parallels recent developments in general education. Unbundling the faculty instructional role is a useful concept for describing a variety of institutions. Faculty and administrators can use unbundling to compare costs of instruction under different scenarios, distribute workloads to increase effectiveness and efficiency and, as part of a larger strategic process, to reevaluate instructional delivery.
