Micromycetes on Austrocedrus chilensis. First record of Rebentischia from Argentina

Authors:

Abstract and Figures

Rebentischia massalongii was collected growing on twigs from Austrocedrus chilensis. So far known only from the temperate zone of Europe and North America, this species is reported for the first time from Argentina and the Southern Hemisphere. The type specimen of R. costi, a species described from Brazil, was re-examined and is here considered an authentic species. A key to the accepted species of Rebentischia is provided.

New data on lichen flora of the Stavropol Territory (Central Caucasus) are provided. Study of four protected natural areas of the Stavropol Territory — «Lermontova Skala» and «Mashuk Mountain» natural monuments, and «Beshtaugorskiy» and «Malyy Essentuchok» sanctuaries resulted in finding of 279 species: 258 species of lichens, 18 species of lichenicolous fungi and 3 species of non-lichenized saprobic fungi. Among them Bacidia notarisiana, Buelliella minimula, Pertusaria pluripuncta, Protoparmelia memnonia, Psorotichia vermiculata, Rebentischia massalongii are new for Russia, 23 species are new for Caucasus, 25 species for the North Caucasus, 164 species for the Central Caucasus and 225 species are new for the Stavropol Territory.

The Yungas of northwestern Argentina are located at the southern limit of a system of tropical and subtropical cloud montane forests extending on the oriental slope along the Andes in South America. Although they cover only less than 2% of the whole Argentinian surface, these mountain forests harbor over 50% of its biodiversity (flora and fauna) (Brown et al. 2005). All mycological investigations carried out in this region () indicate that the fungal diversity of this region is still very poorly known. So far, 755 fungal species have been reported from the southern limit of the Yungas forests in the Tucumán province (Hladki et al. unpublished data). We started an exhaustive survey of two protected areas of the Yungas and their surroundings, the Reserva Experimental Horco Abstract: We report new records for nine species of ascomycetes from the Yungas of northwestern Argentina. Capronia nigerrima, Capronia pulcherrima and Rosellinia dingleyae are new records for South America. Byssosphaeria rhodomphala, Camarops tubulina, Cercophora ambigua, Chaetosphaerella phaeostroma, Tubeufia cylindrothecia are new species for Argentina, and Togninia minima is a new record for the biome.
... Most species of Tubeufiaceae are considered tropical, but there are species that occur primarily in temperate areas (Hughes 1978;Rossman 1979Rossman , 1987Samuels et al. 1978). Additional austral records are known in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Paraguay, i.e. four Acanthostigma species described by Spegazzini (1884Spegazzini ( , 1887Spegazzini ( , 1899Spegazzini ( , 1909, Rebentischia costi in Brazil (Batista et al. 1963), and Rebentischia massalongoi recently recorded in Argentina (Bianchinotti & Sánchez 2009). ...

Tubeufiaceae (Pleosporales, Ascomycota) occurring on native trees from the Andean Patagonian forests in Argentina are described and illustrated. Acanthostigma minutum and Tubeufia cerea with its anamorphic state are reported from South America for the first time on Nothofagus dombeyi and N. antarctica, respectively. Both species were up to now only known from the Northern Hemisphere.

A seemingly undescribed Peltigera and several noteworthy collections were made during a gradient study examining highway effects on forest lichen communities in western Wake County, North Carolina, USA. Rebentischia massalongii is here newly reported from North Carolina. Acrocordia megalospora, Gyalolechia flavorubescens, and Porina scabrida are new records for the Piedmont ecoregion in the state. Lobaria quercizans is noteworthy as belonging to a group of pollution-sensitive cyanolichens that until recently have not been recorded from the Triangle area of central North Carolina. Historical occurrences of Triangle Lobariaceae are also presented.

Three species of non lichenized Dothideomycetes (Ascomycota) found growing on bark of native trees from the Andean Patagonian forests of Argentina are described. Melanomma subdispersum and Mytilinidion tortile are reported for the first time in South America. The distribution area of Mytilinidion andinense is expanded from Río Negro province, where it was found the first time, to Chubut province. Descriptions, data on geographical distribution, habitat and illustrations are provided for the three species.

A new species belonging to the Dothideomycete genus Acanthostigma is described from bark of two Nothofagus species from Argentina. Its identity as a new species is based on both morphology and molecular sequence data. Acanthostigma patagonica differs from other species in the genus by having larger ascomata and setae and wider, asymmetrical ascospores. An amended key to Acanthostigma species is provided along with a discussion of other species previously described from South America.

A classification of the Loculoascomycetes is presented in the form of dichotomous keys to 58 families in eight orders. The families Chaeto-thyriaceae, Fenestellaceae, Parmulariaceae, Phaeosphaeriaceae, Pied-raiaceae, Pleomassariaceae, Pyrenophoraceae, Tubeufiaceae, and Venturiaceae are newly described or are validated. For each family, the type genus is designated and representative genera are indicated.

The taxonomic disposition of Leptosphaeria vagabunda and its six infraspecific taxa are reevaluated based on the examination of herbarium specimens. The previous placement of L. vagabunda is confirmed and the lectotype is designated. Saccado's classification of L. vagabunda var. caulium as L. caulium is also confirmed. There are no morphological similarities between L. vagabunda and five infraspecific taxa. Leptosphaeria vagabunda subsp. alvarensis is synonymized with Lophiostoma heterosporum and the lectotype is designated. Two infraspecific taxa, L. vagabunda f. abietis and L. vagabunda f. salicis-capreae, are classified as Rebentischia abieti and Massarina salicis-capreae, respectively, and the lectotypes are designated. Leptosphaeria vagabunda f. salicis-purpureae and L. vagabunda f. lonicerae are synonymized with L. vagabunda f. salicis-capreae. The neotype for L. vagabunda f. salicis-purpureae and the lectotype for L. vagabunda f. lonicerae are designated.
