Essai de découpage systématique du genre Scutiger (Basidiomycota): Albatrellopsis, Albatrellus, Polyporoletus, Scutiger et description de six nouveaux genres

Abstract and Figures

Scutiger s. lat. is found to include at least ten distinct genera: four previously named (Albatrellopsis; Albatrellus; Polyporoletus; Scutiger, amended) and six introduced here as new (Laeticutis, Neoalbatrellus, Polyporopsis, Polypus, Xanthoporus, Xeroceps). Keys to the ten segregate genera and to the species reported from North America and Europe are provided. The systematic position of these genera based on molecular analysis and the trophic strategies of the analyzed species are also discussed. Differing taxonomic points are examined, and the synonymy between Polyporopsis (Albatrellus) mexicanus and Polyporoletus sublividus is rejected. One new species, Polyporoletus bulbosus, and eleven new combinations are proposed. French Le genre Scutiger au sens traditionnel renferme au moins dix genres distincts: Albatrellopsis, Albatrellus, Polyporoletus et Scutiger, ici amendés, et six introduits comme nouveaux: Laeticutis, Neoalbatrellus, Polyporopsis, Polypus, Xanthoporus, Xeroceps. Une clé des genres issus du démantèlement du genre Scutiger s. lat. est proposée, ainsi qu'une clé des espèces signalées en Amérique du Nord et en Europe. La position systématique de ces genres est discutée d'après les résultats d'analyses moléculaires, ainsi que les caractéristiques trophiques des espèces étudiées. Divers points de taxinomie sont étudiés; en particulier la synonymie entre Polyporopsis (Albatrellus) mexicanus et Polyporoletus sublividus est rejetée. Une nouvelle espèce, Polyporoletus bulbosus, et onze combinaisons nouvelles sont proposées.

Based on morphological and molecular data, a new species of Albatrellus sensu stricto, A. alpinus sp. nov., is described from Yunnan Province of southwestern China. Albatrellus alpinus is characterized by a buff to pale yellow pileal surface, simple septate hyphae, yellow and shapeless oily substance present in all hyphae but seldom in tramal hyphae, and small amyloid basidiospores. Phylogenetic analyses based on the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (nrITS) and the large subunit of the nuclear ribosomal RNA gene (nLSU) indicated that the new species is nested within Albatrellus sensu stricto. A key to the Chinese species of Albatrellus sensu stricto is provided.

Fungal samples were collected from Kazdağı National Park (Balıkesir/Turkey) on October 25, 2014 and they are identified by implementing both traditional methods and ITS rDNA-based molecular phylogenetic analysis. By taking into account the high sequence similarity between the collected samples (ANK DNZ 023) and Albatrellopsis flettii (Morse ex Pouzar) Audet, the collected specimen was regarded as A. flettii and the morphological data also consolidated this finding. As a result, Albatrellopsis flettii was reported for the first time from Turkey at genus and species level. Short description of the newly reported species is provided together with its macro-photographs, illustrations of spores and hyphae and spore images taken by a scanning electron microscope (SEM).

In countries like Malaysia and Indonesia, palm oil is a strategic commodity. A wide variety of products are made from palm oil, including food, cosmetics, as well as biodiesel production. It generates export revenues and helps many economies, especially Indonesia and Malaysia. The production of oil palm is influenced by both the changing climate and the prevalence of pests and diseases. Ganoderma boninense, the white rot fungus, is presently recognised as a significant barrier to the hugely profitable oil palm industry, especially in Southeast Asia and the rest of the production regions. The objective of this review is to examine the impact of G. boninense on oil palm production as induced by climate change. According to the findings of this review, when temperatures rise by 1-4 °C, oil palm yield declines by 10-41% and causes water stress in the palms. Ganoderma basal stem rot affects different parts of palm trees, resulting in a decrease in fresh fruit bunch yield as well as ecological and economic damage. G. boninense affects oil palm more noticeably in Malaysia and Indonesia, resulting in economic losses to farmers and reduced revenue to governments. Climate change projections indicate that G. boninense will have a greater impact on oil palm in the future, particularly from 2050 onwards. In Sumatra, some parts of Malaysia, and other oil palm growing regions, G. boninense is predicted to have a 41-100% impact by 2100. This study recommends appropriate selection of planting area, planting improve variety, best soil management practices, biological control, and the application of biotechnology. These will help in planning for climate change as well as the control and management of G. boninense.

The rapid expansion of oil palm (OP) has led to its emergence as a commodity of strategic global importance. Palm oil is used extensively in food and as a precursor for biodiesel. The oil generates export earnings and bolsters the economy of many countries, particularly Indonesia and Malaysia. However, oil palms are prone to basal stem rot (BSR) caused by Ganoderma boninense which is the most threatening disease of OP. The current control measures for BSR management including cultural practices, mechanical and chemical treatment have not proved satisfactory. Alternative control measures to overcome the G. boninense problem are focused on the use of biological control agents and many potential bioagents were identified with little proven practical application. Planting OP varieties resistant to G. boninense could provide the ideal long-term solution to basal stem rot. The total resistance of palms to G. boninense has not yet been reported, few examples of partial resistances have been observed. Importantly, basidiospores are now recognized as the method by which the disease is spread, and control methods require to be revaluated because of this phenomenon. Many methods developed to prevent the spread of the disease effectively are only tested at nursery levels and are only reported in the national journal inhibiting the development of useful techniques globally. The initial procedures employed by the fungus to infect the OP require consideration in terms of the physiology of the growth of the fungus and its possible control. This review assesses critically the progress that has been made in BSR development and management in OP.

Species of Grifola are famous edible mushrooms and are deeply loved by consumers around the world. Most species of this genus have been described and recorded in Oceania, Europe and South America, with only Grifola frondosa being recorded in Asia. In this study, two novel species of Grifola from southwestern China (Asia) are introduced. Macro and micromorphological characters are described. Grifola edulis sp. nov. present medium-size basidiomata with gray to gray-brown lobes upper surface, mostly tibiiform or narrowly clavate, rarely narrowly lageniform or ellipsoid chlamydospores, cuticle hyphae terminal segments slightly enlarged. Grifola sinensis sp. nov. has white to grayish white lobes upper surface, mostly ellipsoid, rarely narrowly utriform chlamydospores, and broadly ellipsoid to ellipsoid basidiospores (4.6–7.9 × 3.0–5.9 μm). The two new species are supported by phylogenetic analyses of combined nuclear rDNA internal transcribed spacer ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 rDNA (ITS) and β-tubulin ( TUBB ). Moreover, the genetic distance between TUBB sequences of those specimen from GenBank was 1.76–1.9%. Thus, the conspecificity relationship of our specimens remains uncertain, and further specimens are required to conclusively confirm its identity.

As the continuation of Fungal Diversity Notes series, the current paper is the 16th contribution to this series. A total of 103 taxa from seven classes in Ascomycota and Basidiomycota are included here. Of these 101 taxa, four new genera, 89 new species, one new combination, one new name and six new records are described in detail along with information of hosts and geographic distributions. The four genera newly introduced are Ascoglobospora, Atheliella, Rufoboletus and Tenuimyces. Corresponding to morphological characters, phylogenetic evidence is also utilized to place the above-mentioned taxa in appropriate taxonomic positions. The current morphological and phylogenetic data is helpful for further clarification of species diversity and exploration of evolutionary relationships in the related fungal groups.

Three species of pleurotoid, putatively lignicolous basidiomycetes previously described in the genus Lactarius sect Panuoideiwere redescribed from fresh material collected in Guyana and Japan. In Guyana, Lactarius panuoides and Lactarius campinensis were restricted to forests dominated by ectomycorrhizal Dicymbe species (Caesalpiniaceae) and basidiomata of both pleurotoid species were subtended by ectomycorrhizal rootlets. This suggested an ectomycorrhizal nutritional mode for these fungi. Analysis of DNA sequences in the nuclear large subunit region taken from basidiomata and co-occurring ectomycorrhizae of L. panuoides and L. campinensis confirmed that these fungi are ectomycorrhizal and that their fruiting habit on organic deposits and well rotted wood at elevated positions is not due to saprotrophy, as previously assumed. Lactarius uyedae was collected in Japan from mature temperate forests dominated by Fagaceae, yet ectomycorrhizal rootlets were not found in association with the basidiomata. Morphological features and analysis of DNA sequences suggested that L. panuoides and L. uyedae have affinities with established sections of the genus Lactarius, regardless of the pleurotoid morphology of their basidiomata, and that L. campinensis should be transferred to the genus Russula. Discussion is provided for the genus Pleurogala, which was erected to accomodate putatively lignicolous, pleurotoid species of Lactarius.
Thesis
The Great Basin, USA, stretches from the Sierra Nevadas of California to the mountains of Utah, and from the plains of Idaho to Mexico. The fluctuating environmental history of the Great Basin makes it a superb laboratory for testing phylogeographic hypotheses. The multiple cycles of glaciation led to dramatic changes in the environment affecting the organisms present. I used population genetics and Bayesian phylogenetic inference to evaluate the phylogeny and intraspecific population history of two false truffles, Leucophleps spinispora and Hymenogaster sublilacinus . Leucophleps spinispora is found throughout the western United States in the subalpine forests and Hymenogaster sublilacinus is found throughout the world in the lower montane forests. Both species of fungi are common to the Great Basin and have been collected in all mountains with both subalpine and lower montane forests. These two false truffles form a symbiotic association with the coniferous trees found in the Great Basin. The morphology of Leucophleps spinispora was used to develop a phylogeny. The morphological evidence suggested that the Leucogastrales were sister to the Albatrellaceae . The phylogeny inferred from the internal transcribed spacer 1, 5.8S, and internal transcribed spacer 2 sequences supported the morphological phylogenetic hypothesis. In the molecular phylogeny, Leucophleps spinispora was placed sister to Polyporoletus sublividus . The phylogenetic relationships of Hymenogaster sublilacinus have been resolved to the generic level within Cortinarius . The specific relationships of Hymenogaster sublilacinus remained ambiguous, because the full range of character variability within the genus. The fine scale relationships of Hymenogaster sublilacinus were inferred using morphological and molecular data. The extent of morphological and molecular character variation was estimated using data from multiple populations of Hymenogaster sublilacinus and synonyms. The phylogeography of Leucophleps spinispora and Hymenogaster sublilacinus , was inferred using the internal transcribed spacer 1, 5.8S, internal transcribed spacer 2, the intergenic spacer 1, and the intergenic spacer 2 from the nuclear ribosomal repeat. The phylogeography of these two fungi shows two routes of migration into the Great Basin within the last one million years for both fungi. This result suggests that the lifezones may become mixed during times of glaciation.

Basidiocarps of 359 collections, obtained in New York and Nova Scotia and representing 222 species of 22 families of Basidiomycetes, were assayed for lacease by the syringaldazine spot test method, and for tyrosinase by the L-tyrosine and p-cresol spot test methods. A total of 2619 tests was performed for estimating reaction variability associated with ontological and collection-site differences. In 242 ontological test series, results were significantly constant between the immature and mature specimens of the same collection. In a sample of 77 species, test results were significantly constant for multiple collections of the same species, despite differences in 60% of the sample with respect to the year of collection or the site of collection (New York or Nova Scotia). Variability associated with sporocarp maturation and collection replication was insignificant and it did not diminish the taxonomic potential of lacease and tyrosinase spot tests. Four phenoloxidase profiles are defined and it is shown how they may aid in classifying taxa. The occurrence of laccase and tyrosinase has considerable taxonomic value.

Phylogenetic classification of the Aphyllophorales was conducted based on the analysis of nuclear small subunit ribosomal RNA gene (nuc SSU rDNA) sequences. Based on phylogenetic groupings and taxonomic characters, 16 families were recognized and discussed. Although many of the characters had more or less homoplasies, microscopic characters such as the mitic system and clamp, spore amyloidity and rot type appeared to be important in the classification of the Aphyllophorales. Phylogenetically significant families were newly defined to improve the classification of the order Aphyllophorales.
