Contribution to the lichen mycota of South Korea

Abstract and Figures

The present paper briefly describes 14 subtropical to temperate lichen species new to South Korea. Among the genera Bacidia, Cresponea, Diploschistes, Fissurina, Fuscidea, Micarea, Mycoblastus, Phyllopsora, Sarcogyne, Scoliciosporum, and Toninia reported for the first time from South Korea, Fuscidea recensa var. arcuatula, Micarea elachista, Sarcogyne privigna, and Toninia cinereovirens also represent new records for East Asia, including China and Japan.

... In addition, although Acarosporaceae is classified using molecular biology study, it is still actively moving from Acarospora to other genera only by morphological classification study [4,5]. In Korea, 17 species of Acarosporaceae, which are seven species of Acarospora (Acarospora fuscata, A. insolata, A. hospitans, A. nitrophila, A. ulleungdoensis, A. veronensis, A. versicolor), five species of Sarcogyne (Sarcogyne clavus, S. endopetrophila, S. privigna, S. regularis, S. ulleungdoensis), two species of Myriospora (Myriospora rufescens, M. smaragdula), two species of Polysporina (Polysporina golubkovae, P. simplex), and one species of Trimmatothelopsis (Trimmatothelopsis coreana) have been reported through morphological identification [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16]. Acarosporaceae is a crustose lichen and is known as a species that has more than 50 multi-spores, and has hyaline spores. Those taxa are often found in rock and soil in mountain areas or coastal regions in Korea, and very diverse forms and species are known. However, after an overall genetic phylogenetic analysis of carbonized ascomata in 2015, species consisting only of the morphological base are newly divided, and several species of Acarosporaceae in Korea are also being discovered in this situation. As a result of analysis using internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and nuLSU gene analysis, Korean species belonged to Acarospora and Sarcogyne clade, and Acarospora classified as the Acarospora clade was mixed with the Polysporina group and the Sarcogyne clade is mixed with the Acarospora. We identified two new species (Acarospora beangnokdamensis J. S. Park & S. O. Oh, sp. nov., Sarcogyne jejuensis J. S. Park & S. O. Oh, sp. nov.) through morphological, molecular, and secondary metabolite substance and found one new record (Sarcogyne oceanica K. Knudsen & Kocourk). We have made a classification key for Acarospora and Sarcogyne in Korea and reported all information together here.

An examination of collections from Japan has increased the number of Brianaria and Micarea species known from that country from eight to 19, including one new species, M. rubioides Coppins (also from Malaysia and the Philippines). Eleven species are reported as new to Japan ( M. botryoides (Nyl.) Coppins, M. denigrata (Fr.) Hedl., M. erratica (Körb.) Hertel et al. , M. hedlundii Coppins, M. lithinella (Nyl.) Hedl., M. micrococca (Körb.) Gams ex Coppins and M. misella (Nyl.) Hedl.) or new to Asia: M. byssacea (Th. Fr.) Czarnota et al. , M. deminuta Coppins and M. xanthonica Coppins & Tønsberg (new to Asia; Japan); M. nitschkeana (J. Lahm ex Rabenh.) Harm. (new to Asia; South Korea). The presence of Micarea prasina s. str. from Japan needs to be confirmed; no collection was found in this study. Additional collections from South Korea and Sri Lanka are also reported, including the new species M. ceylanica Coppins from Sri Lanka. The identity of M. synotheoides (Nyl.) Coppins, originally described from Japan, has been resolved, resulting in the renaming of Western European material, previously under that name, as M. longispora Coppins. Micarea coreana Lőkös et al . is reported here as a synonym of M. erratica . The type of Lecidea inopinula Nyl. requires the new combination Micarea inopinula (Nyl.) Coppins & T. Sprib. to replace Micarea prasinella (Jatta) I. M. Lamb.

Phyllopsoroid specimens have been reported in additional checklists and geographical studies from, for example, Bangladesh (Aptroot and Iqbal 2011), Northeast India (Logesh et al. 2017), Sri Lanka (Weerakoon and Aptroot 2014), South Korea (Joshi et al. 2011) and Thailand (Aptroot et al. 2007). Phyllopsora is a crustose to squamulose lichen genus inhabiting the bark of trees in moist tropical forests and rainforests. Species identification is generally challenging and is mainly based on ascospore morphology, thallus morphology and anatomy, vegetative dispersal units, and on secondary chemistry. While regional treatments of the genus have been conducted for Africa, South America and Australia, there exists no study focusing on the Asian and Melanesian species. Previously, 24 species of Phyllopsora s. str. have been reported from major national studies and checklists representing 13 countries. We have studied herbarium material of 625 Phyllopsora specimens from 18 countries using morphology, anatomy, secondary chemistry, and molecular data to investigate the diversity of Phyllopsora species in Asia and Melanesia. We report the occurrence of 28 species of Phyllopsora including the following three species described as new to science: P. sabahana from Malaysia, P. siamensis from Thailand and P. pseudocorallina from Asia and Africa. Eight species are reported as new to Asia. A key to the Asian and Melanesian species of Phyllopsora is provided.

Trimmatothelopsis ireneana and T. wendyana are described as new species based on collections from South Korea. Trimmatothelopsis ireneana is characterized by dark brown, punctiform apothecia having a raised dark brown apex, by the 0.1–0.3 mm wide, yellowish thallus areoles, and by a low (130–175 μm) hymenium. Trimmatothelopsis wendyana is characterized by reddish punctiform apothecia, by the smooth, yellowish brown, thallus areoles with round to irregular shape, overlapping as if a squamulose thallus, and by a high hymenium (220–250 μm). A phylogenetic analysis demonstrated the two species to be closely related and separated from other Trimmatothelopsis species as new clades in the mtSSU analysis. In the ITS analysis, the clade of the two new species was found to be a sister to T. rhizobola. A key is presented to all 13 accepted species of Trimmatothelopsis .

A new species, Bacidia fuscopallida Lee & Heo and four new records, B. ekmaniana R. C. Harris, Ladd & Lendemer, B. friesiana (Hepp) Körb., B. heterochroa (Müll. Arg.) Zahlbr. and B. suffusa (Fr.) A. Schneid., are described from South Korea. Bacidia fuscopallida differs from B. diffracta S. Ekman, the most similar species, by warted but non-granular thallus, paler and smaller apothecia without pruina, proper exciple without crystals, over 11-septate ascospores and smaller pycnidia and pycnoconidia. Bacidia ekmaniana is recorded new to Asia, B. heterochroa is reported new to northeastern Asia and B. friesiana and B. suffusa are new to Korea. Molecular analyses employing internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences strongly support the classification of the five species of Bacidia . A surrogate key is provided to assist in the identification of all 19 taxa in Bacidia of Korea.

We report several new findings of Micarea species in the Russian Far East: M. fennica new to Russia and Asia; M. botryoides new to the Far East; M. misella and M. tomentosa new to the southern Russian Far East. Six species from the genus Micarea, including rather rare M. adnata and M. contexta, were found in the Khabarovsk Territory.

Edit Farkas and László Lőkös are internationally well known and respected Hungarian lichenologists. They did their best to maintain and to develop several aspects of the Hungarian lichenology, including biodiversity research on lichen-forming and lichenicolous fungi, taxonomic revisions based on morphological, chemical and molecular methods, ecological, ecophysiological and conservation biological research, as well as investigations on history of science and bibliographical compilations. Hungarian lichen herbaria were enriched considerably by their various Hungarian collections as well as collections from tropical, temperate Asian and Balkan areas. We shortly overview their scientific career and results publishing in more than 100 scientific papers, and similar amount of scientific and popular presentations. As key persons in traditional Hungarian lichenology, their keen and precise way of research might serve as a good example to their students and colleagues.

Fuscidea asbolodes, F. elixii and F. scrupulosa are reported for the first time in Asia and F. recensa var. arcuatula is new to China. Detailed taxonomic descriptions with illustrations as well as a key to all known Chinese Fuscidea species are provided.

The aim of the study was to consolidate data on lichens of the genus Micarea Fr. from the Russian Far East. A total of 19 Micarea species were found to be known from this area. Micarea laeta and M. microareolata were new to Asia and Russia. Additionally, M. laeta was reported new to North America, Austria and Great Britain, M. microareolata – to North America, Czech Republic and Germany as well. Micarea contexta was reported new to Asia, Micarea adnata and M. tomentosa were reported new to the Russian Far East, M. hedlundii to the South of the Russian Far East and M. lignaria to the Sakhalin Region. Micarea turfosa was excluded from the list. The distribution of taxa and some differences between related species were discussed. Molecular data were obtained and used for phylogenetic analysis of Micarea contexta , M. laeta and M. microareolata .

Twenty species of Phyllopsora are recorded from Africa, including the new species P. africana, P. borbonica, P. dolichospora, P. nemoralis, and P. swinscowii. New chemical strains are recorded in P. albicans, P. chlorophaea, P. furfuracea, and P. halei. Lacinules are recognized as vegetative propagules in P. albicans, P. buettneri, P. chlorophaea, P. confusa, and P. mediocris.

This is a taxonomic revision of the corticolous and lignicolous taxa of the genera Bacldia and Bacidina (Lecanoraceae, Lecanorales, lichenized Ascomycotina) in the continental United States and Canada. Twenty-seven species of Bacidia (one of which is divided into two subspecies) and twelve species of Bacidina are recognized. The morphology, secondary chemistry, ecology, and phytogeography of these spceies are discussed, and a key is provided. Apothecium pigmentation, thallus composition, presence of crystals in the proper exciple, hymenium height, thickness of paraphyses, spore shape and size, in Bacidina sometimes also conidial type and tholus structure, have proved to be the most important characters to distinguish betwcen species. Circumscriptions of Bacidia and Bacidina are attempted. Tholus structure, cell structure of the proper exciple, presence of goniocysts, presence of crystals in the thallus cortex, and size of conidiogenous cells are the most valuable characters in the delimitation of these genera. Nine new taxa are described: Bacidia diffracta, B. helicospora, B. salmonea, Bacidina aenea, Bn. californica, Bn. crystallifera, Bn. ramea, Bn, squamellosa, and Bn. varia. Twelve new combinations are introduced: Bacidia campalea, Bacidia laurocerasi subsp. idahoensis, Bacidina assulata, Bn. egenuloidea, Byssoloma meadii, Fellhanera floridana, Herteliana alaskensis, Lecania stigmatella, L, subfuscula, Pachyphiale gyalizella, Ropalospora phaeoplaca, and Ophioparma rubricosa. In addition to the newIy described species, 12 species of Bacidia and four species of Bacidina are correctly reported from the study area for the first time. The genera Psorella and Toniniopsis are reduced into synonymy with Bacidia.

The paper describes nine new records of macro- and micro-lichens from Korea. A brief taxonomic description and comments are presented for all the studied taxa (Catapyrenium squamellum, Chrysothrix candelaris, Endocarpon pallidulum, Endocarpon petrolepideum, Lecanora oreinoides, Leprocaulon albicans, Parmotrema saccatilobum, Verrucaria glaucina and Xanthoria parietina). The lichen genera Catapyrenium, Chrysothrix and Verrucaria are reported for the first time in this country.

Lichen genus Sarcographa Fee, a stromatoid Graphidacean taxa, was newly found in Geomun Island, Jeonnam province. The lichen grew on the bark of Camellia japonica and Eurya emarginata along the coastal line of the island. It was identified as Sarcographa tricosa (Ach.) Müll. Arg. for the first time in Korea.

Based on a literature survey and assessment of the important features of lichen genus Buellia (spore shape and size, anatomy of the exciple as well as analysis of the lichen substances), the present paper describes four new records of B. maritima, B. polyspora, B. spuria and B. stellulata from South Korea. Among them, B. maritima and B. polyspora are firstly reported in East Asia including in China, the Korean Peninsula and Japan. Brief description of all the new records along with earlier described species placed under genus Amandinea and Hafellia are provided with their distribution and chemistry. A key to all the Buellia species reported so far from South Korea is also provided.
