Endemic Seed Plant Species from Hainan Island: A Checklist

Authors:

Abstract

Global conservation of plant biodiversity on tropical islands is a major priority, as approximately one third of all endangered plant species are insular endemics. Checklists can be an important first step in determining conservation priorities on islands. Hainan, the largest island in the Indo-Burma Biodiversity Hotspot, and therefore an international focus for conservation, has the most extensive and best preserved tropical forests in China. In this study we enumerate the endemic seed plants of Hainan Island. The checklist was prepared by consulting: (1) several bibliographic/taxonomic data base resources, (2) relevant taxonomic treatments and floras, and (3) plant taxonomists who are actively working with Chinese plants. The checklist also contains information concerning conservation status, the occurrence of Hainan endemics in four protected areas on the island, and available molecular phylogenies. An additional checklist of the species that were until recently thought to be endemic to Hainan, but are no longer considered to be, is also presented. In a separate paper in this issue of Botanical Review the patterns of endemism on Hainan Island are discussed. Introduction
Plants on tropical and subtropical islands are not only speciation paradigms but are
well known because many of them are on the verge of extinction (Whittaker &
Fernández-Palacios, 2007). About one in six vascular plant species grows on oceanic
islands, and one in three of all endangered plants is an insular endemic (World
Conservation Monitoring Centre, 1992). One of the most extraordinary features of
islands is that they harbor a high number of endemics within a very small area
(Kruckeberg & Rabinowitz, 1985). It is, therefore, not surprising that 10 of the 34
biodiversity hotspots are islands (Mittermeier et al., 2004).
Despite their biological importance and conservation priority, there is an urgent
need for floristic inventories of islands (Campbell & Hammond, 1989). Major
insular systems from the tropics, such as the Caribbean Islands, Philippines,
Madagascar, and Indonesia do not have recent comprehensive floras, or even
checklists of their endemic species. We are aware that developing comprehensive
floras for these islands can be a Herculean task requiring massive resources.
However we argue, that by preparing checklists of insular endemics we are paving
the way for more extensive floristic studies and practical conservation investments.
Checklists can help in establishing conservation actions and priorities and provide a
framework for additional floristic surveys and treatments. More importantly,
checklists of endemics can be instrumental in increasing conservation awareness
among those directly involved in the management of plant biodiversity on these
islands and can provide educational and research tools for environmental biologists
and educators.
In this study, we compiled a checklist of endemic seed plants from Hainan Island.
In a separate paper in this issue of Botanical Review (Francisco-Ortega et al., in
press) we discuss the patterns of endemism on Hainan. Hainan is the second largest
island of China and represents the most important insular element in the Indo-Burma
Biodiversity Hotspot. The island has the most extensive and best preserved tropical
forests in China and therefore is a major priority for conservation (Deng et al., 2008;
Zang & Ding, 2009).
We prepared an initial list of seed plants endemic to Hainan based on the checklist
developed for the indigenous flora of the island by Wu et al. (1994) (see Francisco-
Ortega et al. (In press) for a more extensive discussion of the history of floristic
accounts for Hainan). Consequently we updated the initial list by using several
bibliographic/taxonomic data base resources, including the Catalogue of Life, China
(The Biodiversity Committee of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2008), the Kew
Bibliographic Database (Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, 2009), the International
Plant Name Index (IPNI, 2009), the ISI Web of Knowledge (Thomson Reuters,
2009), the World Checklist of Selected Plant Families (World Checklist of Selected
Plant Families, 2009), and the International Legume Database & Information
Service (ILDIS, 2009). We also consulted relevant taxonomic treatments and
available volumes of the Flora of China, including unpublished family drafts posted
296 J. Francisco-Ortega et al.
on the Flora of China website (Flora of China, 2009). Additionally, we circulated
early drafts of the final checklist among plant taxonomists who are actively working
with Chinese plants (see acknowledgement section below). The resulting checklist of
seed plants endemic to Hainan is presented in Appendix 1. The checklist also
contains information concerning conservation status, the occurrence of Hainan
endemics in four protected areas, and available molecular phylogenies. We found
that many of the species regarded as endemic to Hainan by Wu et al. (1994) also
occur on the mainland or have since then been merged with other, more widespread
taxa. An additional checklist of the species that were until recently thought to be
endemic to Hainan, but are no longer considered to be, and the reason for their
exclusion, is presented in Appendix 2. Among those species previously thought to
be endemic, 23 of them are reported to be in Vietnam, but not in mainland China.

Endemic Seed Plant Species from Hainan Island: A Checklist 305
Appendix 1. List of Endemic Seed Plant Species Currently Recognized on
Hainan Island
As a working taxonomy we have mostly followed the Flora of China series and the
family classifications established by the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (2003). We
have assigned to each species the following descriptors:
Bas.: Date of publication of basionym.
Conserv. stat.: Conservation status of endemic species according to Fu and Jin
(1992), Compilation Group of ChinasBiodiversity(1998), Yu (1999; List of National
Protected Key Wild Plants (First Batch)), Wang & Xie (2004), IUCN (2009,
abbreviated as IUCN), or CSIS (2009; abbreviated as CSIS). Conservation categories
provided by CSIS and IUCN follow guidelines described by IUCN (2001).
Reserve: Presence of species in the nature reserves of Bawangling, Diaoluoshan,
Jianfengling, and Yinggeling (Zeng et al., 1995; Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden,
2001; Jiang et al., 2006a; Bawangling National Nature Reserve, unpublished;
Yinggeling Nature Reserve, unpublished).
Molec.: Species for which molecular phylogenies are available.
Notes: Additional relevant information, such as endemics restricted to limestone
areas (Xing et al., 2004; Wang et al., 2006).

The origin of island biodiversity has been a topic of interest in biogeography. Two main hypotheses were suggested to explain the floristic origin of Hainan Island: ancient vicariance vs. recent dispersal. The Persea group of Lauraceae was used to examine their origin on Hainan Island. A data matrix including five genera and 49 species was assembled, phylogenetic trees of the Persea group were reconstructed using both maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference methods, and a relaxed molecular clock in BEAST was used to estimate the divergence time of the Persea group. The results showed that the Persea group diverged from its sister clade in the Eocene, and that the endemic and common species of Hainan Island and mainland Asia originated relatively late during the Miocene–Pleistocene. Species of the Persea group on Hainan may have arrived from mainland Asia via dispersal or originated via dispersal–isolation–divergence during the Miocene and Pleistocene. The results favor the dispersal hypothesis for the origin of the flora of Hainan Island and negate the vicariance hypothesis.

High genetic diversity and low differentiation present challenges in taxonomy and systematics of Salix. Chloroplast (cp) genome sequencing is efficient for providing new genomic information and elucidating phylogenetic relationships. Salix spathulifolia Seemen, S. cupularis Rehder, and S. annulifera C.Marquand & Airy Shaw are three shrubby willows spread in high-altitude regions in western China. In this study, the integrated circular cp genomes were sequenced and analyzed, and a phylogeny of Salix was constructed on the basis of the cp genomes. The results of chloroplast assembly and annotation information were used to characterize genome feature and interspecific variation. The phylogenetic position of the three willows was evaluated using phylogenetic analysis. Full-length cp genomes were 155,566–155,680 bp with a typical double-stranded circular quadripartite structure, containing one large single-copy region (LSC, 84,431–4552 bp), one small single-copy region (SSC: 16,206–16,221 bp), and two inverted repeats (IR: 27,453–27,461 bp). The cp genomes encoded 130 genes, including 8 rRNA genes, 37 tRNA genes, and 85 protein-coding genes. The guanine-cytosine (GC) content of the overall genome was 36.7%. Comparison among the three willows’ cp genomes revealed high similarity. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that S. spathulifolia was a basal taxon of clade I, while S. annulifera formed a monophyletic group with S. rorida Laksch.; S. cupularis was sister to S. suchowensis W.C. Cheng and S. psammophila Z. Wang & Chang Y. Yang. The complete chloroplast genomes of the three willows provides an additional sequence-based resource for studying the phylogeny and evolutionary history of Salicaceae.

Grasping how climate change will affect the tropical region's leaf potassium, calcium, and magnesium content is pivotal for enhancing our comprehension of plant stoichiometry. Currently, there is limited research on leaf potassium, calcium, and magnesium in tropical plants, which is particularly evident with the increasing importance of tropical rainforest biodiversity studies. This study investigated the impact of geographical and climatic factors on the leaf potassium, calcium, and magnesium content in 346 plants (including woody plants, herbs, and vines) on Hainan Island. The findings demonstrated that the average leaf potassium, calcium, and magnesium contents were 5.77, 11.86, and 2.92 mg·g ⁻¹ , respectively, which were less than that in the Chinese flora. Mean annual precipitation (MAP) has a promoting effect on leaf potassium content ( p < 0.05), suggesting that artificial potassium fertilization is needed due to the increasing MAP. Leaf potassium and magnesium content were positively correlated with latitude ( p < 0.05) and longitude ( p < 0.01); and there was a negative correlation between leaf calcium content and latitude ( p < 0.05), showing that geographical factors have a significant impact on the potassium, calcium, and magnesium content of plant leaves. Additionally, the variables regulating leaf potassium, calcium, and magnesium varied across woody plants, herbs, and vines. Therefore, it is necessary to make corresponding adjustments according to local conditions and the plant functional types during nutrient management. In conclusion, this study sheds light on their potential responses to global changes and is instrumental in informing the management of these nutrients in tropical rainforest plants.

Urban environments are dynamic landscapes shaped by a multitude of factors, including environmental conditions and socio-economic influences. This study systematically investigates how various factors shape urban plant diversity in Haikou City, Hainan Province, China, focusing on 30 key drivers including socio-economic aspects, biophysical conditions, landscape elements, and management practices. Our research methodology involved a comprehensive analysis of these factors’ impact on six types of urban plant species: spontaneous, native spontaneous, exotic spontaneous, cultivated, native cultivated, and exotic cultivated. Conducted in urban areas with varying population densities and landscape features, our sampling approach aimed to understand the species’ distribution patterns. We discovered significant correlations between plant species diversity and specific environmental and socio-economic variables. Our results indicate that spontaneous species are prevalent in densely populated areas with strong social ties, whereas areas rich in tree and shrub cover see fewer such species. Native cultivated species favor more serene, less urbanized landscapes, while exotic cultivated species are predominantly found in economically affluent areas with diverse vegetation. These findings offer valuable insights for urban planning and biodiversity conservation, emphasizing the need for customized greening strategies that align with local environmental and social contexts. By adopting such tailored approaches, urban planners can more effectively manage landscapes, enrich green spaces, and foster biodiverse, sustainable ecosystems. This research not only enhances our understanding of urban plant biodiversity but also lays the groundwork for future studies and policy-making, promoting harmonious integration of diverse plant life within urban settings.

Anthropogenic disturbances have long been acknowledged to be one of the primary threats to biodiversity worldwide, while little is still understood about how human-built infrastructure affects the gene flows and phylogeographic structure of plants. Such information is helpful for the conservation and restoration of human-disturbed ecosystems. Here we studied effects of a big river with a huge reservoir and two expressways on an island-endemic Primulina heterotricha (Gesneriaceae) on Hainan Island, China, one of the key parts of the glob ally important Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot. By applying comparative phylogeography using one nuclear ribosomal DNA and two chloroplast DNA sequences, we estimated the levels of genetic diversity and differentiation in 176 and 117 individuals collected, respectively, before (in 2016) and after (in 2022) the construction of two expressways in Hainan Island, from the same eight populations of P. heterotricha. We found that Primulina heterotricha significantly increased nuclear genetic differentiation during the period 2016–2022, which coincides with the opening of the two expressways. Also notably, the sharing of ribotypes among the three groups of populations separated by the expressway network almost disappeared for the same period. Moreover, the changes in the significance of genetic barriers before and after road construction suggest that geographic isolation caused by both the reservoir and the expressways is key for understanding the present phylogeographical patterns of P. heterotricha. We provide direct evidence that anthropogenic infrastructures such as reservoirs and expressways have been capable of increasing genetic differentiation and, thus, modifying the phylogeographical pattern of P. heterotricha, in just a six-year period (or two generations of the study plant). To mitigate such negative pressure, we suggest establishing ecological corridors to enhance gene exchange between the two sides of the anthropogenic barriers.

China is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world and has given birth to unique ecosystems, abundant species and rich genetic variety. More and more attention has been paid to biodiversity research in China. The Wanda Mountains, located in the east of Heilongjiang Province in northeast Chia, is a northern extension of the Changbai Mountains, one of the main mountains ranges in the region. In this study, we present the first checklist of spermatophyte and invasive alien plant species in the Wanda Mountains, which was compiled using published materials, specimen records and field surveys conducted from 2018 to 2020. This checklist, which has been published in the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), provides a comprehensive overview of the plant species richness of the Wanda Mountains. This data paper presents the first checklist of spermatophytes and invasive alien plants in the Wanda Mountains, comprising a total of 704 species and infraspecific taxa. Amongst these, there are 656 native plants belonging to 328 genera and 94 families and 48 invasive alien plants belonging to 39 genera and 20 families. The checklist includes 251 new records of native plants and 39 new records of invasive plants. This is the first widely shared data on an independent floristic unit in northeast China and can serve as a valuable resource for future biodiversity research in this region and, moreover, trigger more biodiversity data papers in this data-valued country.

Unlike other Cirsium in Korea, Cirsium nipponicum (Island thistle) is distributed only on Ulleung Island, a volcanic island off the east coast of the Korean Peninsula, and a unique thistle with none or very small thorns. Although many researchers have questioned the origin and evolution of C. nipponicum, there is not much genomic information to estimate it. We thus assembled the complete chloroplast of C. nipponicum and reconstructed the phylogenetic relationships within the genus Cirsium. The chloroplast genome was 152,586 bp, encoding 133 genes consisting of 8 rRNA genes, 37 tRNA genes, and 88 protein-coding genes. We found 833 polymorphic sites and eight highly variable regions in chloroplast genomes of six Cirsium species by calculating nucleotide diversity, as well as 18 specific variable regions distinguished C. nipponicum from other Cirsium. As a result of phylogenetic analysis, C. nipponicum was closer to C. arvense and C. vulgare than native Cirsium in Korea: C. rhinoceros and C. japonicum. These results indicate that C. nipponicum is likely introduced through the north Eurasian root, not the mainland, and evolved independently in Ulleung Island. This study contributes to further understanding the evolutionary process and the biodiversity conservation of C. nipponicum on Ulleung Island.

Sequences from the internal transcribed spacer region of nuclear DNA (ITS) and the trnL-F regions of chloroplast DNA for fifteen species of Chirita and seven species of Chiritopsis were used to assess phylogenetic relationships between Chiritopsis and Chirita section Gibbosaccus. Parsimony and Bayesian inference (BI) analyses were conducted using separate nuclear and chloroplast data sets, as well as a combined data set. Phylogenetic trees resulting from separate analyses proved highly congruent and the combined analysis of the two data sets produced a well-supported topology of the species and sections examined. Section Gibbosaccus proved paraphyletic and Chiritopsis polyphyletic in all analyses. Our results provide evidence that the species of Chiritopsis are embedded in section Gibbosaccus and were derived at least twice from within section Gibbosaccus. Finally, we reconsider the morphological evolution and adaptation between and within the two genera. The present analyses indicate that nomenclatural changes will be needed to reflect more accurately relationships in the Gibbosaccus-Chiritopsis complex. Only about 10% of the species in Chirita have been sampled and further data are required before any taxonomic changes can be suggested.
