Abstract

Aphthalmichthys kuro, described by Kuroda (1947) based on a specimen from Suruga Bay, Japan, is referred to Callechelys (family Ophichthidae, subfamily Ophichthinae). It differs from its congeners in its vertebral number (142–146), tail length (2.0–2.1 in TL), and coloration (brownish black). The holotype is lost; we herein designate a neotype and redescribe and illustrate the species based on 5 specimens from Japan and 2 from Taiwan. Keywords Callechelys –Neotype–Japan–Taiwan

An additional description of the Misol snake eel Yirrkala misolensis (Günther, 1872) is reported on the basis of 9 specimens collected from Dong-gang and Ke-tzu-liao, southwestern Taiwan. The species was previously reported from Indonesia and Australia and then extends northward to Taiwan and Japan, and was lacking adequate characterization on morphology. A detail description, fine condition of fresh photographs and 4 partial CO1 sequences are provided for the first time.

An annotated checklist of marine fishes of the Sea of Japan off Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan was compiled from specimen and literature surveys. A total of 767 species (484 genera and 199 families), including 74 species that represent the first reliable records from Yamaguchi Prefecture on the basis of collected specimens and/or photographs, is listed with citation of literature, registration numbers, sizes, localities in the prefecture, and some remarks. The following 21 species represent the first records from the Sea of Japan: Chiloscyllium punctatum (Hemiscylliidae), Proscyllium habereri (Proscylliidae), Strophidon ui (Muraenidae), Callechelys kuro (Ophichthidae), Glossanodon lineatus (Argentinidae), Chlorophthalmus acutifrons (Chlorophthalmidae), Ventrifossa garmani (Macrouridae), Antennatus coccineus (Antennariidae), Scorpaenopsis papuensis (Scorpaenidae), Synanceia verrucose (Synanceiidae), Epinephelus chlorostigma, Pseudanthias rubrizonatus, Pseudanthias sp. (Serranidae), Stalix immaculata (Opistognathidae), Chromis katoi (Pomacentridae), Stlengis misakia (Cottidae), Parapercis aurantiaca (Pinguipedidae), Astrabe flavimaculata, Vanderhorstia sp. An annotated checklist of eels, orders Anguilliformes and Saccopharyngiformes, occurring in Taiwanese waters is presented. The checklist is the result of a series of systematic studies conducted by the authors in the past few years. The eel fauna of Taiwan is one of the richest in the world with a total of 206 species in 74 genera and 13 families in Anguilliformes and a single species in Saccopharyngiformes. The most species-rich families are the Muraenidae with 71 species, followed by the Ophichthidae with 60 species, the Congridae with 29 species, and the Synaphobranchidae with 17 species. Moreover , three genera and 42 species have been described based on at least one type specimen collected from Taiwan. Of these, 36 species are recognized as valid and 23 species are known only from Taiwanese waters at present. Historical records of all Taiwanese eel species are reviewed by examining the original descriptions and figures, vouchers, as well as the recently collected specimens, where available. This represents the first detailed checklist of eels from Taiwanese waters.

After Randall & Lim (2000) compiled a checklist of 3,365 species of marine fi shes from the South China Sea (SCS), it was expected that there would be an increase of many new species or new records, especially the deep-sea fi shes, in this region. In this paper, we went through the Fish Database of Taiwan and sorted a total of 38 orders, 230 families and 2,133 species that occurred in the southwestern Taiwan waters and SCS and have either voucher specimen, underwater photos or citations. Among them, 128 species belonging to 72 families are new records from Taiwan. In the checklist, 171 species occurred only in SCS, including 42 species only in Pratas Islands, 25 species only in Spratly Islands and 81 in other SCS areas; and 1,473 species occurred only in the southwestern inshore habitats of Taiwan. There are 317 new record species that were not included in the checklist of Randall & Lim (2000) and 45 species that are new addition to the fi sh fauna of SCS.
