Abstract and Figures

During field surveys and visits, a rich mycobiota was observed in the tropical vegetation of the Western Ghats. The heavy rainfall and high humidity favours the growth of aphyllophoraceous fungi. Investigations were carried out in 67 localities of Western Ghats including Pune, Bhimashankar, Mulshi-Dongarwadi, Karnala, Kankeshwar, Amboli and Satara areas and a total of 629 samples were studied. A checklist of the 256 species of aphyllophoraceous fungi from Maharashtra State is provided including 170 species from 10 poroid families and 86 species from 20 non-poroid families. The ratio of resupinate to bracket-like type of fruit bodies is 60:40, and the white to brown rot ratio is 80:20. All the species are new records for the area. The collection sites are briefly described and the hosts are listed. An intensive search of literature records is reported. The checklist gives the total count of aphyllophoraceous fungal diversity from Western Ghats of Maharashtra and it is also a valued addition for comparing aphyllophoraceous diversity in the world.

Introduction
Maharashtra State occupies a large por-
tion of the Deccan Plateau in the western
peninsular part of the Indian subcontinent. Its
shape roughly resembles a triangle, with the
725 km western coastline forming the base and
the interior narrowing to a blunt apex some 800
km to the east. It has an area of 307,713 square
kilometres. It is bounded by the states of
Gujarāt, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and
Karnātaka (formerly Mysore) and on the west
by the Arabian Sea. It is about 800 km east to
west and 700 km north to south, lying between
16°4’–22°1’ N and 72°6’–80°9’ E. The State is
divided into high and low level tracts by
Western Ghats, which run parallel to the
western coast. The area of Western Ghats of
Maharashtra known as ‘Sahyadris’ lies bet-
ween 15°60’–20°75’ N and 72°61’–74°40’ E.
The north-south run of Western Ghats is about
750 km and average breadth is 80 km. The
presence of tropical rain forest at an altitude of
500–1500 m is a peculiar feature of this region
(Fig. 1).
The flora of Maharashtra is well repre-
sented by dry deciduous, moist deciduous and
semi-evergreen species in vegetation with
climatic climax. Tropical plants have lingered
92

State.
in semi-evergreen pockets while others have
migrated towards South India. The temperate
species have migrated to higher altitudes.
Many species disappear from the Western
Ghats due to uncertainty of rainfall and rise in
temperature (Mahabale 1987). Meherhomji
(1977) considered that the deciduous vegeta-
tion is of degenerate type.
The forest in Maharashtra State occupies
66,725 square kilometres, which is over 21.7 %
of the area of India under forest. The forested
areas in the state are distributed in three zones:
western, northern and eastern. The western
zone includes Western Ghats and its foothills;
the northern zone comprises the Satpuras and
the Melghat, and the eastern zone corresponds
with Ramtek upland, Chiroli hills, Ahiri upland,
Dewalmari hills and Nawegaon hills. No part
of Maharashtra has a rainfall of less than 1000
mm (Dikshit 1989). Ecologically several types
of forests can be identified in Maharashtra by
taking into consideration the amount of rainfall
and soil moisture in an area and the mor-
phological characteristics of the member trees.
The forests of Maharashtra can be placed in at
least five categories: tropical evergreen hill
forest, tropical moist deciduous forest, tropical
dry deciduous forest, tropical thorn forest, and
littoral and swamp forest.
Study of Aphyllophorales in India
Studies on Aphyllophorales were initiat-
ed along with the launch of studies on Indian
fungi. The first Indian record of a member of
the Aphyllophorales can be traced to Koltzsch
(1832) in his paper on Indian Polyporaceae.
Later Berkeley (1839) described a few Indian
polypores which were collected by W.J.
Hooker. During the first quarter of the 20th
century, Massee (1901, 1906, 1908, 1910)
published several accounts of Indian fungi
based on collections sent to Kew Herbarium by
several workers, notably by Sir E.J. Butler
(1905a,b,c,d, 1918). Several Indian Aphyllo-
phorales were also reported by Lloyd (1898–
1925) and Sydow et al. (1906, 1907, 1911,
1912, 1916). Theissen (1913a,b) reported many
poroid Aphyllophorales collected from the
Bombay presidency by Blatter. S.R. Bose
(1919, 1923, 1924, 1925, 1927) was the first
Indian mycologist to provide a comprehensive
account of the Indian polypores which he
collected from Bengal and its surroundings.
Sundaramani & Madurajan (1925) reported
several members of Polyporaceae from Madras,
and by 1925 there were more than 300 reports
on the Aphyllophorales (Fig. 2).
Butler & Bisby (1931) made a compi-
lation of the Indian fungi in their classic work
“The Fungi of India”. This important work
stimulated the study of Indian fungi including
Aphyllophorales. Our knowledge about the
Indian Aphyllophorales was increased by the
contributions of Bagchee & Bakshi (1950)
Bagchee et al. (1954), Bakshi (1958, 1971),
Bakshi et al. (1963), Puri (1956), Ramakrishan
(1959), Rehill & Bashi (1965), Welden (1965),
Reeves et al. (1967), Thind (1973, 1975), Sathe
& Rahalker (1977), Rattan (1977), Thind &
Dhanda (1978a,b), Anjali Roy (1979, 1981a,b,
1982, 1983, 1984, 1987), Harsh (1982),
Natarajan & Raman (1980), Natarajan &
Kolandavelu (1985),Vaidya (1987) Vaidya &
Bhor (1990) Vaidya et al. (1991), Vaidya &
Rabba (1993a,b), Rabba (1994), Sharma (1995)
and Nanda (1996). Leelavathy & Ganesh (2000)
published details of 80 species of polypores
belonging to 32 genera from three families
(Ganodermataceae, Hymenochaetaceae and
Polyporaceae) in the book “Polypores of
Kerala”.

The earliest reports of hymenochaeta-
ceous fungi from India date back to Montagne
(1842, 1846), Lloyd (1898–1925) and Theissen
(1911). Later papers were published by Bose
(1924, 1925, 1934, 1946), Bagchee et al.
(1954), Bagchee (1961), Bagchee & Bakshi
(1950), Bagchee & Singh (1954), Bakshi
(1955), Bakshi et al. (1963), Banerjee (1935),
Ganesh & Leelavathy (1986), Lowe (1963a,b),
Pegler (1966, 1967a,b), Roy (1979), Ryvarden
& Dhanda (1975), Sharma (1993), Sharma &
Ghosh (1989), Thind & Adlakha (1956), Thind
& Chatrath (1960), Thind & Dhanda (1978a,b),
Thind & Rattan (1971a,b,c 1973a,b) and Thind
et al. (1970).
Rattan (1977) published a book entitled
“The Resupinate Aphyllophorales of the North
Western Himalayas”. A good piece of work
was done by Sharma (1995) on “Hymenochae-
taceae of India”. Special efforts were taken to
publish the book entitled “Genera of Indian
Polypores” by Sharma (2000), who gave an
idea about the diversity of polypores from
India. The manual entitled “Polyporaceae of
India” by Anjali Roy & Asit De (1996) was
based on exhaustive studies on fungi belonging
to the family Polyporaceae collected from
different parts of India during the preceeding
40 years. Studies on resupinate Aphyllopho-
rales were initiated along with the launch of
studies on Indian fungi. Later Hennings (1901)
published “Fungi India Orientalis”. However,
in comparison with the work on non-poroid
resupinate Aphyllophorales in the other states
of India, there is very little information avai-
lable on this group in the state of Maharashtra,
particularly from Western Ghats. In fact, study
of non-poroid resupinate Aphyllophorales
largely remained neglected and there were only
a few incidental reports of their occurrence.
The first serious study was made by Bagchee &
Bakshi (1954) who described 14 species. Six
94
more species were described by Thind &
Adalakha (1956). Reid et al. (1959) and Rehill
& Bakshi (1965, 1966) in their generic mono-
graphs recognised one species of Peniophora,
seven species of Corticium and 18 species of
Stereum as validly reported from the area,
while four more species were added by Thind
& Rattan (1971a,b). In addition, there are other
scattered reports of a few species in such
genera as Pellicularia, Hymenochaete, and
Coniophora. Thind & Rattan (1968, 1970a,b,
1971a,b,c, 1972, 1973a,b) described 59 species
(under Thelephoraceae) including 36 new
records and 6 new species while Thind &
Khara (1968) and Khara (1978a,b) recorded 24
more species (under Hydnaceae) including one
new species, from the North Western
Himalayas. A few additions were made by
Natarajan & Kolandavelu (1985) on resupinate
Aphyllophorales from South India, Naik (1990)
on wood rotting fungi from Karnala and
Kankeshwar, Rabba (1994) on the genus Phel-
linus from Maharashtra, and Manjeet (1996) on
wood rotting fungi from Bhimashankar.
The bibliography includes those referenc-
es which were used for identification of genera
and species mentioned in the checklist. Detail-
ed description of the genus, species, their key
and databases will be published elsewere in a
website and the forthcoming book entitled
“Aphyllophoraceous fungi from Maharashtra”
by Vaidya & Ranadive (Table 1).

... Polypores are primarily tuned towards wood from certain plant species, and the tropics are losing forests at an alarming rate (Krah et al., 2018). Similarly, little is known about the aphyllophorales species in the Velha tehsil of Pune District, India (Ranadive et al., 2011). Therefore, in the current investigation, the characterization and studies have been conducted on two new records of the Velha region of Pune District, India. ...
... Few reports are available on the diversity of Aphyllophorales in Maharashtra state of India. A total of 256 Aphyllophoraceous fungi found in Maharashtra State are listed in a checklist, comprising 86 species from 20 non-poroid families and 170 species from 10 poroid families (Ranadive et al., 2011). A few notable species from the Pune District were reported. ...

The present study was conduct to identify the genotypes and the relationship between milk production and genotypes in Awassi sheep breeding. Three genotypes were selected (AA, AB and BB) and showed the most dominant genotypes were AB (37%), than BB (34%) and AA (29%). The association between -LG gene and total milk yield was positive. The highest performing genotype ewe was related with BB β pattern (72.40 kg). For protein of ewe milk, the highest percentage of protein was with AA pattern (5.21%) and the lower with BB pattern (4.20%). AB genotype produced highest percentage of SNF (10.89%) compared with genotypes BB and AA (10.67 and 10.25%). The environmental and genotypic differences affect animal characteristics resulting in increase or decrease of production

Mycological developments in India, like other colonial states, had great influence from British mycologists. A great deal of contribution has come from Edwin J. Butler before independence. In fact, it has been conveniently segregated as pre-Butler and post-Butler period to trace the development of mycology in India. Several active centres of mycology were then established. Early part of the nineteenth century was dominated by descriptive taxonomic research followed by fungal plant pathology. This was followed by physiological aspects and recently the biotechnological applications. Recent advances in molecular biology have complemented the biodiversity studies in addition to various other branches of mycology. These aspects are discussed in this chapter.

Caesalpinia pulcherrima'. It was further stated that it grew in association with a Ptychogaster-state, and that it should be placed in the section Hispidi of the genus Xanthochrous Pat. This section has subsequently come to form the basis of the more natural genus Inonotus Karst., of which only one species is known to form chlamydospores, namely L rickii (Pat.) Reid, described from Brazil. Examination of type material of Polyporus calcuttensis has confirmed that the two species are synonymous. The perfect states of both fungi consist of imbricate pilei bearing numerous, golden-brown, broadly ellipsoid basidiospores, 6-5-8 x 4'5-6 (7 X 5)1k; similar loosely arranged context hyphae, 3-8.-5[ diam., ribbon-like though fairly frequently branched; and the same thick-walled, brown chlamydospores, highly variable in shape and size, found either in elongate, radial cavities within the context, or within the tube-layer, interspersed amongst the hymenial structures. Typical of many species of this genus, and of closely allied genera, e.g. Phellinus, numerous setal-hyphae are produced in the tube-trama. However, setal-hyphae are also occasionally present in other parts of the sporophore. On the surface of the pileus of P. calcuttensis, there is a distinct palisade-like layer of vertically arranged setal-hyphae, together with loosely arranged, pale coloured hyphae (Fig. I/I, p. 40). The majority of these setal-hyphae are simple and directly comparable to those produced in the tube-trama, but occasionally there may be isolated branching, usually towards the base (Fig. 1/2). Nevertheless these setal-hyphae are quite different from the highly branched setigerous elements found on the pileus surface of L cuticularis (Bull. ex Fr.) Karst. Since previous descriptions of L rickii fail to mention the presence of setal-hyphae on the surface of the pileus, a re-investigation of all available material became necessary to check the reliability of this character. The following observations were made on collections deposited in the Kew herbarium:

Forms lignosus (Klotzsch) Bres. and Polyporus zonalis Berk., both occurring parasitically and saprophytically, are described from sporophores and cultures. F. lignosus is orange-red on the upper surface with orange-yellow margin and orange-red pore tubes fading towards the context. In P. zonalis the surface is pale to pinkish with white pore tubes. The presence of mucronate cystidia in the sporophore and of fibre hyphae and conidia in cultures distinguishes F. lignosus from P. zonalis in which they are absent. The latter, however, develops incrusted cystidia in the sporophore and clamped hyphae and acanthophyses in culture, all absent from F. lignosus.
