Abstract and Figures

The relationship between creativity and susceptibility to associative memory illusions in the Deese/Roediger–McDermott procedure was investigated using a multiple regression analysis. Susceptibility to false recognition was significantly predicted by performance on a measure of convergent thinking (the Remote Associates Task) but not by performance on a measure of divergent thinking (the Alternative Uses Task). These findings suggest that the ability to engage in convergent (but not divergent) thinking underlies some of the individual variation in susceptibility to associative memory illusions by influencing the automaticity with which critical lures are activated at encoding.

Abstract
The relationship between creativity and susceptibility to associative memory illusions in the
Deese/Roediger-McDermott procedure was investigated using a multiple regression analysis.
Susceptibility to false recognition was significantly predicted by performance on a measure of
convergent thinking (the Remote Associates Task) but not by performance on a measure of
divergent thinking (the Alternative Uses Task). These findings suggest that the ability to
engage in convergent (but not divergent) thinking underlies some of the individual variation in
susceptibility to associative memory illusions by influencing the automaticity with which
critical lures are activated at encoding.

1. Introduction
Roediger and McDermott (1995) showed that illusions of memory can be created when
participants study lists of associated words. In the Deese/Reodiger-McDermott (DRM)
procedure (Deese, 1959, Roediger & McDermott, 1995), participants study lists of associates
of a nonpresented “critical lure”. For example, participants study words such as sour, candy,
and sugar, which are associates of the critical lure sweet. When memory for the lists is tested,
participants frequently claim to remember the critical lures, with levels of false memory
equaling or even exceeding levels of correct memory. The DRM illusion has been explained in
terms of an activation-monitoring account (Roediger, Watson, McDermott, & Gallo, 2001)
whereby participants spontaneously generate associates of the studied words. The critical lures
are then subject to errors of source monitoring (Johnson, Hashtroudi, & Lindsay, 1993) and
falsely endorsed as having been studied. An alternative explanation is provided by fuzzy-trace
theory (FTT, see Reyna & Brainerd, 1998) whereby critical lures are falsely remembered
because they match the “gist” of the related items presented at study.
Although Roediger and McDermott’s findings have been replicated many times (see
Gallo, 2006, for a review), one phenomenon that has yet to be explained is the considerable
individual variation in susceptibility to the DRM illusion. Elevated levels of false memory
have been reported in elderly adults (Balota et al., 1999) and patients with frontal lobe damage
(Melo, Winocur, & Moscovitch, 1999), while reduced levels of false memory have been
observed in children (e.g., Brainerd, Reyna, & Forrest, 2002). Other studies have attempted to
identify the causes of individual variation within the general adult population. For example,
elevated levels of false memory have been observed in individuals who reported high levels of
dissociative experiences and vivid imagery (Winograd, Peluso, & Glover, 1998), individuals
with low working memory capacity (Watson, Bunting, Poole, & Conway, 2005), individuals
high in need-for-cognition (Graham, 2007), and extroverts (Sanford & Fisk, 2009).
Given the extensive use of the DRM procedure in the study of false memories, it is

important to identify other cognitive and personality factors that influence susceptibility to the
illusion. The aim of the current research was to investigate whether susceptibility to the DRM
illusion is predicted by creativity. A number of previous studies have shown that creative
individuals are particularly susceptible to false autobiographical memories. For example,
Hyman and Billings (1998) found that creativity (as measured by the Creative Imagination
Scale) was positively related to the creation of false childhood memories. However, to the best
of our knowledge, no studies have as yet investigated the influence of creativity on
susceptibility to the DRM illusion.
Although creativity is a complex mental faculty that encompasses a variety of cognitive
abilities (see Dietrich, 2004, for a review), a number of measurable components have been
identified. It is possible that some, but not all, aspects of creativity may predict susceptibility
to the DRM illusion. The aspects of creativity that were the focus of the current study are
commonly referred to as convergent and divergent thinking (Guilford & Hoepfner, 1971).
Convergent thinking requires the production of the best single answer to a problem or set of
problems and can be measured by the Remote Associates Task (RAT; Mednick, 1962). In the
RAT, participants are presented with three words (e.g., food/forward/break) and asked to
generate a semantic associate that can be paired with each of the three to form a compound
word or phrase (e.g., fast). Divergent thinking requires the generation of multiple answers to a
single problem and can be measured by the Alternative Uses Task (AUT; Guilford, 1967) in
which participants are asked to generate alternative uses for a common object (e.g., a brick).
Mednick (1962) developed the RAT on the basis of his theory that creative individuals
generate more and broader associations to a given stimulus. Our hypothesis, therefore, was
that the false recognition of critical lures would be predicted by performance on the RAT, as
both involve the generation of semantic associations. In contrast, the AUT measures the ability
to generate novel or atypical ideas, which has less overlap with the processes that underlie the
DRM illusion; therefore we did not expect the false recognition of critical lures to be predicted

by performance on the AUT.
2. Method
2.1. Participants
Participants were 55 undergraduate students (41 females) who took part for course
credit. Mean age was 21 years (SD=5.29). They were tested at individual workstations in
groups of up to 12 and participated for course credit. The research was carried out in
accordance with The Code of Ethics of the World Medical Association (Declaration of
Helsinki) for experiments involving humans.
2.2. Stimuli and design
Study items consisted of 16 DRM lists rated by Stadler, Roediger, and McDermott
(1999) as producing high levels of false recognition. Each list comprised 12 associates of a
nonpresented critical lure. The lists were divided into two sets of 8. Each set was studied by
half the participants and the other set provided the distractor items for the recognition test. The
recognition test consisted of a printed sheet containing 8 studied words (one from each list), the
8 critical lures of the studied lists, plus 8 list items and the 8 critical lures from the unstudied
lists. The stimuli for the RAT consisted of 24 three-item problems taken from Bowden and
Jung-Beeman (2003) presented on a two-sided response sheet with two columns of six items
on each side. The items in each problem were presented one above the other with a line to the
right for participants to record their responses. All participants saw the same stimuli in the
same order. The AUT (Guildford, 1967) required participants to list alternative uses for a
brick.
2.3. Procedure
The DRM lists were presented one at a time on PCs at a rate of 2 seconds per word with
a 1 second interval. Each list was preceded by the list number (List 1, List 2, etc) displayed for
2 seconds. After the presentation of the final list, participants were given a letter cancelation
task for 1 minute. They were then given the recognition test, which they completed at their

own pace. Participants were then allowed 8 minutes to complete the AUT, followed by a
further 8 minutes to complete the RAT (these times were based on the results of pilot studies).
As an example of the RAT, participants were shown that the word pin could be paired with
safety, cushion, and point to make safety pin, pincushion, and pinpoint.
3. Results
Multiple regression was used to assess the ability of convergent and divergent thinking
to predict critical lure, studied word, and distractor item recognition rates. Preliminary analyses
were conducted to ensure no violation of the assumptions of normality, linearity,
muticollinearity, and homoscedasticity. The sample size (n = 55) was also sufficient for this
procedure according to the guidelines of Stevens (2009).
The AUT responses were rated for creativity on a scale of 0-4. Impossible uses (e.g., a
time machine) were given a score of 0, standard uses (e.g., to build a wall) were given a score
of 1 (with no additional scores for repetition of uses), and alternative uses were given scores of
2, 3, or 4 depending on the rated creativity. Initial ratings were made by the third author, and
20% were blind double-rated by the second author. The initial inter-rater reliability score was
92%, with all disagreements resolved through discussion.
3.1. Critical Lure Results: Hierarchical Multiple Regression
A 61% false recognition rate for critical lures was observed (M = 4.90, SD = 1.72),
indicating that the DRM effect was successfully replicated. It was expected that convergent
thinking (M = 7.14, SD = 2.43) would be a significant predictor of critical lure recognition
whereas divergent thinking (M = 26.91, SD = 11.77) would not. Given these strong
predictions, a Hierarchical Multiple Regression was conducted with the convergent thinking
scores entered at Step 1 and the divergent thinking scores at Step 2 (see Table 1).
The initial correlations revealed a significant relationship between convergent thinking
and critical lure recognition (r = .33, p<.01), but no significant relationship between divergent
thinking and critical lure recognition (r = .15, p = .13), or between convergent thinking and

divergent thinking (r = .02, p = .44). The regression analysis revealed that convergent thinking
accounted for 11% (R2 = .11) of the variance in false recognition F(1, 53) = 6.29, p<.05. The
addition of the divergent thinking scores in Step 2 resulted in a non-significant 2% increase in
the explained variance, F (1, 53) = 1.25, p = .27. Convergent thinking therefore appears to be
a significant predictor of critical lure false recognition (β = .32, p<.05), whereas divergent
thinking does not (β = .14, p = .27).
3.2. Distractor Items: Simultaneous Multiple Regression
As no relationship was expected between either convergent or divergent thinking and
the false recognition of distractor items (M = 2.16, SD = 2.15), a Simultaneous Multiple
Regression was used for this second analysis (see Table 3). Initial correlations revealed a
significant relationship between convergent thinking and distractor item recognition (r = .40,
p<.01), but no significant relationship between divergent thinking and distractor item
recognition (r = -.15, p = .14). The regression analysis revealed that convergent and divergent
thinking together accounted for 18% (R2 = .18) of the variance in distractor item recognition,
F(2, 52) = 5.91, p<.01. However, distracter item recognition was significantly predicted only
by convergent thinking (β = .40, p<.01) and not by divergent thinking (β = -.15, p =.22).
3.3. Convergent Thinking: Simultaneous Multiple Regression for Critical Lure and Distractor
Item Recognition
The above results demonstrate that convergent thinking predicts both critical lure false
recognition and distractor item recognition. A Simultaneous Multiple Regression was
therefore used to determine whether critical lure false recognition or distractor item false
recognition is the strongest predictor of convergent thinking (see Table 2). Initial correlations
revealed no significant relationship between critical lure false recognition and distractor item
recognition (r = .10, p<.23). The two predictors together accounted for 24% (R2 = .24) of the
variance in convergent thinking, F(2, 52) = 8.34, p = <.01. Both critical lure false recognition
(β = .29, p<.05) and distractor item recognition (β = .37, p<.01) were significant predictors of

convergent thinking, with β values indicating that distractor item recognition is a slightly
stronger predictor.
3.4. Studied Words: Simultaneous Multiple Regression
Neither convergent nor divergent thinking were expected to predict studied word
recognition (M = 5.85, SD = 1.58), therefore a Simultaneous Multiple Regression was used to
assess this (see Table 3). Initial correlations revealed no significant relationship between
convergent thinking and studied word recognition (r = .06, p<.32), or divergent thinking and
studied word recognition (r = -.02, p = .44). The regression analysis revealed that the two
predictors together accounted for less than 1% (R2 = .004) of the variance in studied word
recognition, F(2, 52) = .12, p = .89, confirming that neither convergent (β = .06, p = .65) nor
divergent thinking (β = -.02, p = .88) were significant predictors of correct recognition.
4. Discussion
The main finding from the current study was that susceptibility to the DRM illusion
was significantly predicted by convergent thinking (as measured by the RAT) but not by
divergent thinking (as measured by the AUT). This pattern is consistent with the activation-
monitoring account of the DRM procedure (Roediger et al., 2001), as both the RAT and the
DRM illusion rely on the activation of semantic associates. In contrast, the AUT requires
participants to generate novel uses for a common object, which has less in common with the
processes underlying the DRM procedure. In terms of fuzzy-trace theory (Reyna & Brainerd,
1998), it is possible that participants’ ability to connect the gist of semantically related words
underlies performance on the RAT, which relies on semantic connections, but not on the AUT,
which does not rely on such processes.
The current findings are consistent with the proposal by Mednick (1962) that creative
individuals generate more and broader associations to a given stimulus. Recent findings by
Rossmann and Fink (2010) also support this view by showing that the rated associative
distance between unrelated words was lower for creative individuals than for individuals rated

as less creative. According to Howe, Wimmer, Gagnon, and Plumpton (2009), it is the
automaticity with which critical lures are activated that determines the likelihood that they will
be falsely remembered. It is possible that the shorter associative pathways used by creative
individuals increase the automaticity with which the critical lures are generated in the DRM
procedure.
It is, perhaps, surprising that the ability to engage in convergent thinking (considered a
positive trait in terms of creativity) has the negative consequence of increasing susceptibility to
false memory. However, previous research has shown that other ostensibly positive traits can
increase susceptibility to false memory. For example, Castel, McCabe, Roediger, and Heitman
(2007) reported that expertise in a given domain has what they termed a “dark side”, whereby
experts were more prone than novices to domain-relevant intrusions. Castel et al. suggested
that experts’ superior organizational processes, which usually enhance memory for domain-
relevant information, also support the associations that give rise to memory illusions. More
broadly, the DRM illusion itself is a negative corollary of spreading activation processes that
support normal memory functions (see Roediger & McDermott, 1995). The increased
susceptibility to false memory as a function of convergent thinking can also be seen as the
“dark side” of an otherwise adaptive process.
An unexpected finding from the current study was that convergent thinking
significantly predicted levels of false recognition of the unrelated distracters. Although we did
not anticipate such an effect, it is consistent with Mednick’s (1962) proposal that creative
individuals make broader associations to a given stimulus. It is possible that participants who
scored high on the RAT in the current study generated associations that went beyond the
themes of the DRM lists, leading to the partial priming of words not directly associated with
the list items. One way to test the influence of the breadth of associative pathways would be to
manipulate the backwards associative strength of the critical lures. If increased susceptibility
to the DRM illusion is the result of creative people using broader associative pathways, then it

is likely that participants who score high on convergent thinking will falsely recall lures of low
BAS to a greater degree than participants who score low on convergent thinking.
Although both critical lure false recognition and distractor false recognition were
significant predictors of performance on the RAT, comparison of the β values in Table 2
suggests that distractor items were a slightly stronger predictor than critical lures. Although
this finding was unexpected, one possible explanation is that the greater predictive power of
distractors relative to critical lures reflects the differential use of a recall-to-reject strategy.
Previous research has shown that participants can use a recall-to-reject strategy to avoid false
recognition in the DRM procedure, whereby they reject critical lures because they can recall
the associated items that were presented at study (e.g., Gallo, 2004). It is likely that the
effectiveness of such a strategy will depend on the strength of association between the critical
lure and the associated study item. A recall-to-reject strategy will, therefore, be less effective
at reducing the false recognition of unrelated distracters. We acknowledge, however, that this
is a post hoc explanation and that the effect observed with the unrelated distracters warrants
replication.
To summarize, the current study found that levels of false recognition in the DRM
procedure were significantly predicted by performance on a test of convergent thinking but not
by performance on a test of divergent thinking. These findings suggest that individuals who
perform well on tests of creativity may be at increased risk of false memories, at least the false
memories produced by the DRM procedure. This effect is, however, highly specific and
depends on the overlap between the processes that underlie the creativity test and those that
give rise to the DRM illusion. Although the current findings do not arbitrate between the two
main theories of the DRM illusion (activation-monitoring and fuzzy-trace theory), they suggest
one possible source of the individual variation in susceptibility to the DRM illusion.

Constructive episodic retrieval processes play an adaptive role in supporting divergent thinking (i.e., creatively combining diverse bits of information) and means-end problem solving (i.e., generating steps to solve a social problem). However, the constructive nature of episodic memory that supports these adaptive functions also leads to memory error. In three experiments we aimed to identify a direct link between divergent thinking and means-end problem solving - as assessed in the Alternative Uses Task (AUT) and Means-End Problem Solving (MEPS) task - with the generation of false memories in the Deese-Roediger-McDermott paradigm. In Experiment 1, we replicated prior findings where false memory was positively correlated with performance on the AUT, and also showed for the first time that increased performance in the MEPS task is associated with increased false recall. In Experiment 2, we demonstrated that the link between false recall and performance on the MEPS task did not extend to other forms of problem solving, as assessed with the Everyday Descriptions Task (EDT). In Experiment 3, we showed that when the EDT was preceded by the MEPS task in an attempt to influence participants to engage in a similar episodic-problem solving strategy, performance in both tasks was correlated with false memory. These findings provide evidence for a direct link between the adaptive benefits of constructive episodic processes, in the form of enhanced divergent creative thinking and problem solving, and costs, in the form of increased memory error.

While it is tempting to conclude that false memories point to fundamental flaws in the nature or composition of memory, there is a growing number of researchers who argue that, to the contrary, false memories reflect the operation of adaptive processes as they reflect gist-based processing supporting the retention of themes and meanings that facilitate generalization and abstraction (Gallo, 2010;Roediger & McDermott, 1995;Schacter et al., 2011). Individual differences in the generation false memories are also associated to divergent -the processes of generating multiple alternative ideas or solutions (Thakral et al., 2021) -and convergent thinking -selecting the creative ones (Dewhurst et al., 2011), two core components associated to creative thought (Ward et al., 1997). Societal structures and theoretical models of memory organization share network-like features, suggesting potential mutual insights into how information spreads and shapes collective memories. Here, we used experimental manipulations of the topological structure in lab-created community networks during a computer-mediated conversational recall task of lists of words from a DRM paradigm to test a central premise from the spreading of activation account in cognitive psychology: the emergence of true and false memories. We hypothesized that social network structure, whether clustered or not, would influence the formation of true and false memories. We found that information exchange promoted true memories in clustered networks by reinforcing the mnemonic convergence of the community members’ memories. Conversely, nonclustered networks lead to a greater number of false memories by increasing widespread cross-activation of nonoverlapping memories, blurring the boundaries between true and false memories. Current findings provide empirical evidence that mnemonic spreading within the social network influenced the emergence of true and false memories and highlight the dynamic interplay between network topology, memory dynamics, and collective knowledge evolution, shedding light on memory processes in both individual and social contexts.

False memory formation is usually studied using the Deese-Roediger-McDermott paradigm (DRM), in which individuals incorrectly remember words that were not originally presented. In this paper, we systematically investigated how two modes of thinking (analytical vs. intuitive) can influence the tendency to create false memories. The increased propensity of intuitive thinkers to generate more false memories can be explained by one or both of the following hypotheses: a decrease in the inhibition of the lure words that come to mind, or an increased reliance on the familiarity heuristic to determine if the word has been previously studied. In two studies, we conducted tests of both recognition and recall using the DRM paradigm. Our observations indicate that a decrease in inhibitory efficiency plays a larger role in false memory formation compared to the use of the familiarity heuristic.

In the present study, we hypothesized that the frontoparietal control network played important roles in effectively inhibiting the low creative ideas when performing the creative tasks. To test this hypothesis, the alternative uses task was used to obtain the creative score and the low-creative ideas ratio (LCIR), and the resting-state electroencephalogram (RS-EEG) microstates were used to measure the temporal characteristics of the frontoparietal control network. The results showed that the creative score plays moderating roles in the relationships between the LCIR and the parameters of the fourth microstate (MS4) which is generated from the frontoparietal control network. Specifically, for the individuals with higher creative score, the LCIR were negatively associated with the coverage rate of the MS4 and the possibilities of transitions between MS4 and MS1 (related to the semantic network), while the relationships were not observed for the individuals with lower creative score. Thus, we thought that the frontoparietal control network might be easier to sequentially activate the semantic network for the individuals with higher creative score, which make them more effectively inhibiting the low creative ideas under the creative tasks.

The value problem for knowledge is the problem of explaining why knowledge is more valuable than mere true belief. The problem arises for reliabilism in particular, i.e., the externalist view that knowledge amounts to reliably acquired true belief. Goldman and Olsson argue that knowledge, in this sense, is more valuable than mere true belief due to the higher likelihood of future true beliefs (produced by the same reliable process) in the case of knowledge. They maintain that their solution works given four empirical assumptions, which they claim hold “normally.” However, they do not show that their assumptions are externalistically acceptable; nor do they provide detailed evidence for their normality claim. We address these remaining gaps in Goldman and Olsson’s solution in a constructive spirit. In particular, we suggest an externalist interpretation of the assumptions such that they essentially spell out what it means for a broad range of organisms capable of belief-like representations to be epistemically adapted to their environment. Our investigation also sheds light on the circumstances in which the assumptions fail to hold and knowledge therefore fails to have extra value in Goldman and Olsson’s sense. The upshot is a deeper understanding of their solution as a contribution to naturalized epistemology and a strengthened case for its empirical validity.

The ability to generate novel ideas, known as divergent thinking, depends on both semantic knowledge and episodic memory. Semantic knowledge and episodic memory are known to interact to support memory decisions, but how they may interact to support divergent thinking is unknown. Moreover, it is debated whether divergent thinking relies on spontaneous or controlled retrieval processes. We addressed these questions by examining whether divergent thinking ability relates to interactions between semantic knowledge and different episodic memory processes. Participants completed the alternate uses task of divergent thinking, and completed a memory task in which they searched for target objects in schema-congruent or schema-incongruent locations within scenes. In a subsequent test, participants indicated where in each scene the target object had been located previously (i.e., spatial accuracy test), and provided confidence-based recognition memory judgments that indexed distinct episodic memory processes (i.e., recollection, familiarity, and unconscious memory) for the scenes. We found that higher divergent thinking ability—specifically in terms of the number of ideas generated—was related to (1) more of a benefit from recollection (a controlled process) and unconscious memory (a spontaneous process) on spatial accuracy and (2) beneficial differences in how semantic knowledge was combined with recollection and unconscious memory to influence spatial accuracy. In contrast, there were no effects with respect to familiarity (a spontaneous process). These findings indicate that divergent thinking is related to both controlled and spontaneous memory processes, and suggest that divergent thinking is related to the ability to flexibly combine semantic knowledge with episodic memory.

There is a fervent debate about the processes underpinning false memories formation. Seminal theories have suggested that semantic memory would be involved in false memories production, while episodic memory would counter their formation. Yet, direct evidence corroborating such view is still lacking. Here, we tested this possibility by asking participants to perform the Deese–Roediger–McDermott (DRM) task, a typical false memory paradigm, in which they had to study lists of words and subsequently to recognize and distinguish them from new words (i.e., the false memory items). The same participants were also required to perform a semantic task and an episodic-source memory task. Our results showed that a higher number of false memories in the DRM task occurred for those participants with better semantic memory abilities, while a lower number of false memories occurred for participants with better episodic abilities. These findings support a key role of semantic processes in false memory formation and, more generally, help clarify the specific contribution of different memory systems to false recognitions.

Background Substance abuse has an impact on various cognitive domains, including memory. Even though this impact has been extensively examined across different subdomains, false memory has been sparsely studied. This systematic review and meta-analysis seek to synthesize the current scientific data concerning false memory formation in individuals with a history of substance abuse. Methods PubMed, Scopus, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and PsycINFO were searched to identify all experimental and observational studies in English, Portuguese, and Spanish. Studies were then examined by four independent reviewers and, if they met the inclusion criteria, assessed for their quality. The Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool for randomized controlled trials (RCT) and the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal checklists for quasi-experimental and analytic cross-sectional studies were used to assess the risk of bias. Results From the 443 screened studies, 27 (and two more from other sources) were considered eligible for full-text review. A final 18 studies were included in the present review. Of these, 10 were conducted with alcoholics or heavy drinkers, four focused on ecstasy/polydrug users, three were done with cannabis users and one focused on methadone maintenance patients with current cocaine dependence. Regarding false memory type, 15 studies focused on false recognition/recall, and three on provoked confabulation. Conclusions None but one of the studies considering false recognition/recall of critical lures found any significant differences between individuals with a history of substance abuse and healthy controls. However, most of the studies taking into account false recognition/recall of related and unrelated events found that individuals with a history of substance abuse showed significantly higher rates of false memories than controls. Future research should continue to consider different types of false memories as well as their potential association with relevant clinical variables. The essential role of creativity has been highlighted in several human knowledge areas. Regarding the neural underpinnings of creativity, there is evidence about the role of left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) on divergent thinking (DT) and convergent thinking (CT). Transcranial stimulation studies suggest that the left DLPFC is associated with both DT and CT, whereas left IFG is more related to DT. However, none of the previous studies have targeted both hubs simultaneously and compared transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and random noise stimulation (tRNS). Additionally, given the relationship between cognitive flexibility and creativity, we included it in order to check if the improvement in creativity may be mediated by cognitive flexibility. In this double-blind, between-subjects study, 66 healthy participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups ( N = 22) that received a transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS), or sham for 20 min. The tDCS group received 1.5 mA with the anode over the left DLPFC and cathode over the left IFG. Locations in tRNS group were the same and they received 1.5 mA of high frequency tRNS (100–500 Hz). Divergent thinking was assessed before (baseline) and during stimulation with unusual uses (UU) and picture completion (PC) subtests from Torrance Creative thinking Test, whereas convergent thinking was evaluated with the remote association test (RAT). Stroop test was included to assess cognitive flexibility. ANCOVA results of performance under stimulation (controlling for baseline performance) showed that there were significant differences in PC ( F = 3.35, p = 0.042, n p 2 = 0.10) but not in UU ( F = 0.61, p = 0.546) and RAT ( F = 2.65, p = 0.079) scores. Post-hoc analyses showed that tRNS group had significantly higher scores compared to sham ( p = 0.004) in PC. More specifically, tRNS showed higher performance in fluency ( p = 0.012) and originality ( p = 0.021) dimensions of PC compared to sham. Regarding cognitive flexibility, we did not find any significant effect of any of the stimulation groups ( F = 0.34, p = 0.711). Therefore, no further mediation analyses were performed. Finally, the group that received tDCS reported more adverse effects than sham group ( F = 3.46, p = 0.035). Altogether, these results suggest that tRNS may have some advantages over tDCS in DT.

Roediger and McDermott (1995) induced false recall and false recognition for words that were not presented in lists. They had subjects study 24 lists of 15 words that were associates of a common word (called the critical target or critical lure) that was not presented in the list. False recall and false recognition of the critical target occurred frequently in response to these lists. The purpose of the current work was to provide a set of normative data for the lists Roediger and McDermott used and for 12 others developed more recently. We tested false recall and false recognition for critical targets from 36 lists. Despite the fact that all lists were constructed to produce false remembering, the diversity in their effectiveness was large—60% or more of subjects falsely recalled window and sleep following the appropriate lists, and false recognition for these items was greater than 80%. However, the list generated from king led to 10% false recall and 27% false recognition. Possible reasons for these wide differences in effectiveness of the lists are discussed. These norms serve as a useful benchmark for designing experiments about false recall and false recognition in this paradigm.

In Experiment 2, a false recall rate of 55% was obtained with an expanded set of lists, and on a later recognition test, subjects produced false alarms to these items at a rate comparable to the hit rate. The act of recall enhanced later remembering of both studied and nonstudied material. The results reveal a powerful illusion of memory: People remember events that never happened.

The present experiment examined the false recall and false recognition of nonstudied words that are preceded by a list of strong associates in patients with amnesia due to damage restricted to medial temporal lobe or diencephalic regions (MTL/D amnesics), in nonamnesic patients with damage restricted to the frontal lobes (FL nonamnesics), and in amnesic patients with damage to the frontal lobes in addition to medial temporal lobe damage (FL amnesics). We used the Deese/Roediger and McDermott paradigm (Deese, 1959; Roediger & McDermott, 1995) in which people frequently claim that nonstudied words appeared on a presented list. At immediate free recall, the results taken together showed that MTL/D amnesic patients and FL nonamnesic patients produced higher levels of false memory than did controls. At recognition both types of amnesic patients produced less false recognition than either frontal-lobe patients or controls. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that abnormally high levels of false memories are related to the following three conditions: (1) partial memory for the word lists, (2) the ability to extract the semantic gist of the list, and (3) a deficit in strategic monitoring processes.

The past decade has seen a flurry of experimental research into the neurocognitive underpinnings of illusory memories. Using simple materials and tests (e.g., recalling words or pictures), methods such as the famed Deese--Roediger--McDermott (DRM) task have attracted considerable attention. These tasks elicit false memories of nonstudied events that are vivid, long lasting, and difficult to consciously avoid. Additional research shows that these memory illusions are fundamentally related to more complex memory distortions. As a result, this rapidly expanding literature has generated a great deal of excitement--and even some controversy--in contemporary psychology. Associative Illusions of Memory provides an ambitious overview of this research area. Starting with the historical roots and major theoretical trends, this book exhaustively reviews the most recent studies by cognitive psychologists, neuropsychologists, and cognitive neuroscientists. The strengths and limits of various experimental techniques are outlined, and the large body of existing data is meaningfully distilled into a few core theoretical concepts. This book highlights the malleability of memory, as well as the strategies and situations that can help us avoid false memories. 42 undergraduates studied 16 word lists, each of which converged on a common list associate that was not studied. 10 measures of individual differences in cognition and personality were also administered. The tendency to intrude words in recall and to falsely recognize distractor words in a recognition memory test were significantly correlated with reports of dissociative experiences and vivid mental imagery. It is argued that the memory errors, as well as the reports of dissociative experiences, reflect difficulties in source monitoring, in particular, in the discrimination of events that originate externally from those that originate internally. In this study we investigate the relationship between individual differences in associative information processing and different facets of creativity. Associative information processing was measured by means of a slightly modified variant of Gianotti et al.’s (2001) word pair list, in which participants are shown indirectly related (e.g. cat – cheese) and unrelated word pairs (e.g. subject – marriage) and asked to generate a third word that could possibly serve as a connective associative link between the presented stimuli words. In contrast to Gianotti et al., we instructed our participants to judge the associative distance between the given problem words on a rating scale. This modified word pair list was administered along with a variety of psychometric creativity tasks in two different groups of university students who considerably differed with respect to their creativity-related demands in their fields of studies. We observed a weak but significant negative correlation between originality and the rated associative distance between the unrelated word pairs. In addition to this, the higher creative group estimated the distance between unrelated word pairs as being smaller than lower creative people. The results support Mednick’s (1962) theory of individual differences in associative hierarchies.

Two experiments investigated whether false recognition in the Deese–Roediger–McDermott (DRM) paradigm is mediated by individual differences in need for cognition. In Experiment 1, participants were presented with word lists composed of associates which converge on a non-presented critical word. On a subsequent recognition test, high need for cognition participants falsely recognized a greater proportion of critical words as having been previously studied than did low need for cognition participants. Experiment 2 replicated Experiment 1, and also tested a manipulation of list strength. Word lists used were either strong or weak in terms of eliciting the critical item. These experiments show that individual differences in approach to information processing tasks can affect the rate of false memory elicited in the DRM task.

The effects of associative strength and gist relations on rates of children’s and adults’ true and false memories were examined in three experiments. Children aged 5–11 and university-aged adults participated in a standard Deese/Roediger–McDermott false memory task using DRM and category lists in two experiments and in the third, children memorized lists that differed in associative strength and semantic cohesion. In the first two experiments, half of the participants were primed before list presentation with gist-relevant cues and the results showed that: (1) both true and false memories increased with age, (2) true recall was higher than false recall for all ages, (3) at all ages, false memory rates were determined by backward associative strength, and (4) false memories varied predictably with changes in associative strength but were unaffected by gist manipulations (category structure or gist priming). In the third experiment, both gist and associative strength were varied orthogonally and the results showed that regardless of age, children’s (5) true recall was affected by gist manipulations (semantic cohesion) and (6) false recall was affected by backward associative strength. These findings are discussed in the context of models of false memory illusions and continuities in memory development more generally.

Relative to more introverted persons, extraverts have been found to exhibit better recall and recognition in a range of memory paradigms including demonstrating a superior semantic priming effect. The present study sought to establish whether this aspect of personality might be associated with the false memory paradigm developed by Deese, Roediger, and McDermott (the DRM paradigm). Lists containing semantically related words were presented to extraverts, ambiverts, and introverts. Compared to the other two groups, extraverts falsely recalled more critical lures (words that although semantically related were not in the original lists) and non-list words. The results are discussed in relation to the concept of spreading activation.
