The Valdieri area (Italian Maritime Alps) has long been known for harbouring a large variety of Mediterranean and Alpine elements, often occurring together in an intricate pattern of co-habitations that is practically without equal elsewhere in the Alps. The area has been designated as a Site of Communitarian Interest (SCI: “Argentera” IT1110053), has been listed among the 32 “Prime Butterfly Areas” occurring in Italy and is now considered a priority site for conservation. A large number of amateur and professional entomologists alike have visited the area over the years, generating a mass of information on the Valdierian butterflies. We carefully searched the “grey” literature for data on the butterflies and the burnet moths occurring in this area. Since the second half of the 19th Century, almost 100 papers and books have been dedicated, in whole or in part, to the description of this fauna, which currently includes many as 161 species. We sampled butterflies in 2008–2009 and found one previously unreported species. Here we provide an annotated checklist of the butterfly and burnet moth species occurring in the area, including comments on their ecology and distribution, as well as a complete list of the publications dealing with them.

INTRODUCTION
Italy is a country characterized by extremely high biodiversity,
which we can observe in virtually all animal and plant groups
(Balletto etal. 2007). At least in montane areas, this occurs in
concomitance with relatively low human disturbance, in com-
parison with most other European countries (Balletto2005).
In the NW of the country, peaks of the mountain chain
representing the extreme south-western Alps and frequently
surpassing2000m in elevation, occur close to the seaside,
thereby generating very steep ecological gradients both on
their southern, maritime (Ligurian) and northern, continental
(Piedmontese) slopes. For this reason, the imposing traces of
the Holocene ice cap of Mt. Marguareis come to overhang
the Mediterranean woodlands from a horizontal distance of
less than 20km. Holm oak (Quercus ilex L.) formations often
occur in a mixture with beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and with-
out the, elsewhere normal, interposition of deciduous oaks.
Over time, the extremely peculiar ecological features of this
area have created conditions for the formation of a number
of relatively small refuge areas that allow the survival of many
isolated animal and plant populations, which continued to
thrive throughout the Holocene glacial periods (Balletto&
Casale1991). Probably as a consequence of this, the Valdieri
area, together with the rest of the Ligurian and Maritime
Alps, represents a well-known biodiversity hotspot, where a
number of animal groups (butteries, zygaenid moths, carabid
beetles, reptiles and amphibians) show unusually high species
richness and endemism (Balletto etal. 2010).
Partially because of this high biodiversity, the area has been
designated as a Site of Communitarian Interest (SCI: “Argen-
tera” IT1110053), listed among the 32“Prime Buttery Areas”
occurring in Italy and considered a priority site for conservation
(Balletto etal. 2003). e exceptionally large amount of informa-
tion available on this fauna has sometimes prompted the focus
of research to shift from simply faunistic to strictly ecological
and several studies were devoted to the community ecology or
auto-ecology of Valdierian butteries (Balletto& Toso1975;
Balletto etal. 1977; 1982, Epstein1980; Jutzeler1993).
Information on the general area is abundant and dates
back in time to the second half of the19th Century (e.g.,
Ghiliani1852, 1853; Curò1874, 1880; Gianelli1890,
Casagrande& Manzone1890). Some papers were explicitly
aimed at illustrating this particular fauna, such as those by
Turati& Verity (1911, 1912) and Harris (1938). A large
number of amateur and professional entomologists alike
have visited the area along the years, generating a mass of
information on the Valdierian butteries. e most relevant
papers include Verity (1905-11, 1911, 1914, 1916, 1919,
1920, 1922, 1928a,b, 1931, 1932, 1938, 1939, 1940-
1953); Turati (1909, 1910, 1911, 1914a, b, 1919, 1923);

Excluding many more general papers, at least96journal
articles and books have been dedicated, in whole or in part,
to the description of the butteries and the burnet moths of
the mountains of the Valdieri area, where as many as 161spe-
cies (viz. 129Papilionoidea Latreille, 1806; 18Hesperioidea
Latreille, 1809 and 14Zygaenoidea Latreille, 1809) have
been found to occur.
During our two-year eld study, we collected 97buttery
species at sevenrepresentative sites. One species proved to be
a new record for the Valdieri area, thus increasing the list for
this area to 162species of diurnal Lepidoptera.

MATERIAL AND METHODS
BiBliography
Among the many activities undertaken for the purpose of
the EDIT project, in detail for ATBIs (All Taxa Biodiversity
Inventories), we carefully searched the “grey” literature for
data on the butteries and burnet moths occurring in the
surroundings of Valdieri.
ColleCtion
From June to August (2008-2009) we sampled butteries at
seven selected sites, scattered across the Valdieri area. We did
not sample burnet moths.
– Site1: Natural Reserve of Juniperus phoenicea L. (878m).
Adry grassland sampled in2008.
– Site2: Subalpine pastures of “Pian della Casa” (1650m).
Sampled in2008.
– Site3: Fishing reserve “Cappello di Napoleone”–Beech-
wood clearings at1300m. Sampled in2009.
– Sites4-7: Valasco valley. We selected 4sampling areas
along an altitudinal gradient (1600-1900m) to cover dif-
ferent habitat types. Specically, these were: 4) subalpine
heathland (Rhododendron L.) at1690m; 5) hygrophilous
grassland at1750m; 6) Juniperus heathland/grassland
at1790m and7) rocky slopes and screes at1900m. All
these sites were sampled in2009.
Butteries were sampled by linear transects (Pollard&
Yates1993) under weather conditions suitable for insect
activity. Most of the specimens were identied in the eld
and a small number (generallyonemale andonefemale) were
gathered to provide a reference collection. Habitats Directive
species were not collected. e material is deposited in the
general collection of our laboratory (DBIOS).
BiologiCal data
For each listed species we report the following information:
the rst record for the Valdieri area, the chorotype (following
Balletto etal. 2007), the general ecological requirements of
the species and records obtained during our twoyear eld
study (site and time of the year). e ecological requirements
of burnet moths are based on the information provided by
Balletto etal. (2007) and Naumann etal. (1999). In the case
of butteries, each species was schematically characterised by
its ecological requirements as described in Balletto& Kudrna
(1985) and subsequent modications. We considered four
characteristics: 1) general habitat requirements (nemoral,
subnemoral, open herbaceous, screes); 2)altitudinal pref-
erences (listing the altitudinal range of each species); 3)
thermal preferences (eurythermic, microthermic, meso-
philous, thermophilous) and 4)ground-water preferences
(eurychorous, hygrophilous, mesophilous, xerophilous). For
the vegetational cover of habitats, we classify nemoral and
subnemoral species separately because, even though both are
more or less linked to woodlands, the latter spend only a
relatively short part of the day (normally the hottest) in the
wood itself, whereas they generally forage in the surround
-
ing grasslands or meadows.

RESULTS
On 6th August2008, one adult of Minois dryas (Scopoli,
1763) was collected at the natural reserve of Juniperus phoe-
nicea. is is a xerothermic site, at878m, protected because
of the presence of this restricted thermophilous plant, repre-
senting the highest and northernmost population of this
plant in Italy. is record is reported in the following species
list as “new record”.
e observed species richness at the sites were: 42species in
the Natural Reserve of Juniperus phoenicea (site1); 27species
in the pastures of “Pian della Casa” (site2); 50species in the
beech-wood clearing around the shing reserve of “Cappello
di Napoleone” (site3); 52species in the subalpine heathland
(Rhododendron–1690m) at Valasco (site4); 28species in the
Valasco hygrophilous grassland at1750m (site5); 50species
in the Juniperus heathland/grassland (1790m) of Valasco
(site6); 33species in the Valasco rocky slopes and screes (site7).

area follows the arrangement in Balletto etal. (2014), where
all data on authorship, original combinations and references
can be found, together with the synonyms most frequently
used in the literature.

For the moment, the occurrence in Italy of L.juvernica is based on
a small number of specimens from the E Alps (V. Dincă, in litt.).
e “non L.sinapis populations” of C Italy have been demonstrated
to represent L.reali (Dincă etal. 2011, 2013). In NItaly, 25 “non

L.sinapis populations” have been recorded, but no molecular data
are currently available for the Valdieri area. However, L.juvernica is
known to occur at least in NE Italy, at the Val di Tovo lakes (Dincă

DISCUSSION
e Valdieri area has long been known to include a variety of
Mediterranean and Alpine elements, often occurring together
side by side, in such an intricate pattern of co-habitations as
is found virtually nowhere else in the Alps.
Van Swaay etal. (2006, 2010) have shown that butteries
are strongly declining all across Europe (31% of the European
butteries has declining populations). Habitat destruction
is the main cause of extinction throughout the Italian ter
-
ritory and, as already pointed out for many countries (e.g.,
van Swaay etal. 2010), a correct conservation policy should
begin by stopping urbanization and intensive agriculture, at
least in the most sensitive areas, and revitalizing traditional
agro-pastoral activities. e analysis of population extinction
patterns within the Italian buttery fauna, however, shows
that such measures may be insucient (Bonelli etal. 2011).
One-third of these extinctions, in fact, were not clearly related
to habitat destruction. Other threats, in particular global
warming, will soon represent a matter of serious concern, as
also shown by Settele etal. (2008).
A study by Bonelli and colleagues (unpublished data) has
shown that considerable changes have occurred in the overall
distribution of butteries in a sector of the Valdieri area, over
a 30year time frame (1977-2010). Some species, present
exclusively above the montane belt, such as Coenonympha
[darwiniana] macromma (see also Schmidt& Besold2010),
C.glycerion (Borkhausen, 1788), Colias phicomone (Esper,
[1780]), Erebia manto ([Denis& Schiermüller], 1775), or
Pieris callidice (Hübner, [1800]) have disappeared, while as
many as18other species have spread from lower to higher
altitudes.
e species newly recorded during our eldwork for the
Valdieri area might fall into the latter case. Minois dryas is
rather widespread in North Italy. It is classied as subnemoral
and mesophilous, usually being present from the lowland to
the montane belt. Its previous absence from the faunal list of
Valdieri could be due to a recent spreading of the species into
the area. However, even if historical data represent an invalu-
able tool, only the use of standardised monitoring, repeated
over time, allows the reliable identication of changes in
species numbers and distribution.
In this context, the still very high biodiversity of the Valdieri
area becomes even more important. Moreover, this area is
home to viable populations of four globally threatened but-
tery species, all listed in Annex IV of the Habitats Directive
and in Appendix2of the Bern Convention: Parnassius apollo
(Linnaeus, 1758) (also included in CITES App.1), Parnassius
mnemosyne (Linnaeus, 1758), Papilio alexanor Esper, [1800]
and Maculinea arion (Linnaeus, 1758).
Populations of P.apollo and P.mnemosyne, in particular, benet
from a abundant breeding sites in this area and accordingly
have very high population densities, while P.alexanor has in
this area its most robustly established population within the
Italian territory (Bonelli etal. this issue, Sala& Bollino1991).
Several other interesting species, from a conservation point
of view (van Swaay etal. 2010) are also rmly established
in this area, such as ymelicus acteon (Rottemburg, 1775)
(mainly Mediterranean), Glaucopsyche alexis (Poda, 1761)
and Boloria titania (Esper, [1789]) (mainly montane species).

Understanding and identifying butterfly species in various land uses serves a crucial eco-logical function in protecting biodiversity and improving environmental policy decisions. However, such a study on the diversity of butterflies from different land use types in and around Chebera Churchura Na-tional Park, southwestern Ethiopia, is extremely lacking. Thus, the present study aimed to quantify the species richness and abundance of butterflies in the Chebera Churchura National Park and its surroundings, which are prioritized for their conservation. Data was collected from January 2021 to June 2021 following the line transect method in the three habitat types using a standard insect net. In total, 2118 individuals representing 79 species and 38 genera belonging to five families were recorded. The Nymphalidae were the most dominant butterfly family, accounting for 45 species (57%) of the total butterflies observed, while the Heaspariidae contributed the least. Among the 79 species, 9 were very common, 32 were common, 37 were rare, and 1 was very rare. Based on butterfly species richness and composition, riverine forest had the greatest diversity and abundance with 65 species and 1028 individuals, and the least species composition was recorded in mosaic habitat with 26 species and 350 individuals, and the difference in diversity was significant. The study region was generally found to be rich in the diversity and abundance of butterflies in all three forms of land use. However, the study area is currently becoming an investment hub, and many road development projects are being planned. Ongoing human activities will devastate and harm the richness, abundance, and diversity of butterfly species. As a result, such human-induced activities need to be carefully studied to protect biodiversity.

Our work aims to assess how butterfly communities in the Italian Maritime Alps changed over the past 40 years, in parallel with altitudinal shifts occurring in plant communities. In 2019, we sampled butterflies at 7 grassland sites, between 1300–1900 m, previously investigated in 2009 and 1978, by semi-quantitative linear transects. Fine-scale temperature and precipitation data elaborated by optimal interpolation techniques were used to quantify climate changes. The changes in the vegetation cover and main habitat alterations were assessed by inspection of aerial photographs (1978–2018/1978–2006–2015). The vegetation structure showed a marked decrease of grassland habitats and an increase of woods (1978–2009). Plant physiognomy has remained stable in recent years (2009–2019) with some local exceptions due to geomorphic disturbance. We observed butterfly ‘species substitution’ indicating a general loss in the more specialised and a general gain in more tolerant elements. We did not observe any decrease in species richness, but rather a change in guild compositions, with (i) an overall increased abundance in some widespread and common lowland species and (ii) the disappearance (or strong decrease) of some alpine (high elevation) species, so that ‘resilience’ could be just delusive. Changes in butterfly community composition were consistent with predicted impacts of local warming.

We provide the fi rst annotated checklist of the Heteroptera (Insecta: Hemiptera) of the Site of Community Importance and Special Area of Conservation “Alpi Marittime” (IT1160056), based on literature records and unpublished material collected between 2012-2015 within two European projects in which the Alpi Marittime Nature Park was involved. Th e literature review provided a list of 62 species, recorded for the study area between 1884 and 1990, scattered in 14 papers. The new data here provided raise the total number of species occurring in this region to 208, grouped in 25 families and 135 genera. For each species reported in the catalogue, previous literature records, new data and the known distribution are provided. Among the most interesting fi ndings, Salda henschii (Reuter, 1891) which was recently recorded for the fi rst time in Italy, and Sternodontus obtusus Mulsant & Rey, 1856 which is rediscovered in the Piedmont region after more than a half century

This paper discusses three problems concerning the Woodland Grayling, Hipparchia fagi Scopoli, 1763, with respect to the identity and application of the junior name Papilio hermione Linnaeus, 1764. In 1977, the late Otakar Kudrna designated a specimen of the Rock Grayling, Hipparchia alcyone [Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775, to become the lectotype of Papilio hermione-as a result of which hermione supplanted alcyone as the senior epithet for this species. Because P. hermione is the nominal type species of Hippar-chia Fabricius, 1807, Kudrna's action rendered this a genus based on a misidentified species. Third, while a majority of lepidopterists have ignored Kudrna's action and continue to apply the name H. alcyone to the Rock Grayling, and still regard P. hermione as a junior subjective synonym of H. fagi, the formal nomenclature for the Rock Grayling has become unstable because a large minority have nonetheless accepted Kudrna's lectotype designation and all that follows from it. It is demonstrated here that no syntypes of Papilio hermione (or Papilio fagi) have survived; consequently, Kudrna's lectotype designation for P. hermione is invalid. By designation of a single specimen of the Woodland Grayling as neotype for both P. fagi and P. hermione, the two names are rendered objectively synonymous, thereby restoring stability to the species name for the Rock Grayling (as Hipparchia alcyone), and to the application of Papilio hermione (= Hipparchia fagi) as nominal type species of the generic name Hipparchia.

This paper summarizes the main results from taxonomic inventories drawn up as part of the ATBI of the Mercantour/Alpi Marittime parks in the French and Italian Alps. It compares the data on different groups of the invertebrate fauna published in the Zoosystema issues devoted to the ATBI with those recorded in the EDIT (European Distributed Institute of Taxonomy) and INPN (Inventaire national du Patrimoine naturel) ATBI databases. It also highlights the contribution of the ATBI inventory to a better knowledge of the biology and ecology of various animal taxa, as well as to the use of the data in conservation management. Overall, 927 animal taxa and 38 host plants are documented in the two special issues, of which 904 are recorded from both parks and 400 are new for one or both parks. Twelve species (ten terrestrial and two aquatic) and one genus (aquatic) are described as new for science, this increases to 30 the number of new invertebrate taxa described since 2006 from the Mercantour/Alpi Marittime parks. However, due to taxonomic uncertainty about material sorted to morphospecies and delays in species descriptions, these represent only a fraction of the taxa recognized as new during the ATBI. This faunal inventory, which includes 88% insect taxa, greatly enhances knowledge of Mercantour/Alpi Marittime biodiversity, notably for several poorly studied taxonomic groups. It also confirms the importance of the area as a European biodiversity hotspot, especially for arthropods and the groundwater fauna, by highlighting the remarkable percentage of endemic species, some of which are rare and poorly documented in the literature.

We present here an updated checklist of the Italian butterflies (Lepidoptera: Hesperioidea and Papilionoidea) organised in the following sections (tables): 1. Introduction, providing a broad outline of the paper. 2. Checklist proper, summarised in a table, listing, in separate columns: a. Indications of endemicity (sub-endemic, Italian endemic). b. The relevant Annex in the Habitats Directive (legally protected species). c. Threat levels (in Europe: for threatened species only). d. A serial number (whose format is uniform across all Italian animal groups). This number runs throughout all the following tables (see 3, 4). e. Name, author, date of publication. f. Schematic overall indication of each specie’s Italian range (N[orth], S[outh], Si[icily], Sa[rdinia]). 3. Nomenclature, containing basic nomenclatural details for all listed genera, species and some of the generally or historically recognised subspecies and synonyms. 4. Notes, where a variety of other information is provided, on a name by name (family, subfamily, genus, species, subspecies) basis. All remaining doubts as concerns each individual case are clearly stated. The number of nominal species listed in the previous edition of this checklist, published almost 20 years ago, was 275, whereas it has raised to 290 in the current list. The status of about a dozen of these remains controversial, as discussed in the text. The present checklist is meant to provide an update of the Italian butterfly fauna, taking into account all relevant publications, and tries to explain all nomenclatural changes that had to be introduced, in the appropriate section. Many detailed comments are offered, when necessary or useful, in the notes.

Molecular studies of natural populations are often designed to detect and categorize hidden layers of cryptic diversity, and an emerging pattern suggests that cryptic species are more common and more widely distributed than previously thought. However, these studies are often decoupled from ecological and behavioural studies of species divergence. Thus, the mechanisms by which the cryptic diversity is distributed and maintained across large spatial scales are often unknown. In 1988, it was discovered that the common Eurasian Wood White butterfly consisted of two species (Leptidea sinapis and Leptidea reali), and the pair became an emerging model for the study of speciation and chromosomal evolution. In 2011, the existence of a third cryptic species (Leptidea juvernica) was proposed. This unexpected discovery raises questions about the mechanisms preventing gene flow and about the potential existence of additional species hidden in the complex. Here, we compare patterns of genetic divergence across western Eurasia in an extensive data set of mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences with behavioural data on inter- and intraspecific reproductive isolation in courtship experiments. We show that three species exist in accordance with both the phylogenetic and biological species concepts and that additional hidden diversity is unlikely to occur in Europe. The Leptidea species are now the best studied cryptic complex of butterflies in Europe and a promising model system for understanding the formation of cryptic species and the roles of local processes, colonization patterns and heterospecific interactions for ecological and evolutionary divergence.

In depth studies of patterns of extinction are fundamental to understand species vulnerability, in particular when population extinctions are not driven by habitat loss, but related to subtle changes in habitat quality and are due to ‘unknown causes’. We used a dataset containing over 160,000 non-duplicate individual records of occurrence (referred to 280 butterflies and 43 zygenid moths), and their relative extinction data, to carry out a twofold analysis. We identified ecological preferences that influence extinction probability, and we analysed if all species were equally vulnerable to the same factors. Our analyses revealed that extinctions were non-randomly distributed in space and time, as well as across species. Most of the extinctions were recorded in 1901–1950 and, as expected, populations at their range edges were more prone to become extinct for non-habitat-related causes. Ecological traits were not only unequally distributed between extinction and non-extinction events, but also not all ecological features had the same importance in driving population vulnerability. Hygrophilous and nemoral species were the most likely to experience population losses and the most prone to disappear even when their habitat remained apparently unchanged. Species vulnerability depends on both ecological requirements and threat type: in fact, each species showed a distinct pattern of vulnerability, depending on threats. We concluded that the analysis may be an important step to prevent butterfly declines: species that are strongly suffering due to ‘unknown changes’ are in clear and urgent need of more detailed auto-ecological studies.
