Sequential detection for multiuser MIMO CDMA systems with single spreading code per user

Abstract

We consider multiuser MIMO CDMA systems where each user has multiple transmit antennas and different transmit antennas of the same user use the same spreading code. Because transmit antennas of the same user use the same spreading code, inter antenna interference would degrade the system performance. We propose a novel decision-window-based data detection (sequential detection) method to mitigate the inter antenna interference. We also modify the existing single-user single-antenna channel estimation algorithm for multiuser multiantenna systems. The simulation results show that, under the same channel estimation algorithm, the proposed sequential detection scheme with decision window of two symbols significantly outperforms the non-sequential one which is a special case of the proposed one when the decision window is of one symbol. It also outperforms the existing SIC-VBLAST, decorrelator-VBLAST, and MMSE-VBLAST schemes.

Previous papers analyzed the throughput performance of the CDMA ALOHA system in Rayleigh fading channel, but they assume that the channel coefficient of Rayleigh fading was the same in the whole packet, which is not realistic. We recently proposed the finite-state Markov channel (FSMC) model to the throughput analysis of DS uncoded CDMA/unslotted ALOHA networks for fixed length data traffic in the mobile environment. We now propose the FSMC model to the throughput analysis of coded DS CDMA/unslotted ALOHA networks with variable length data traffic and one or two user classes in the mobile environment. The proposed DS CDMA/unslotted ALOHA wireless networks for two user classes with access control can maintain maximum throughput for the high priority user class under high message arrival per packet duration.

In this paper, we extend the case of information exchange error mitigation for the distributed orthogonal space-time block code (DOSTBC) for two transmit antennas to distributed quasi-orthogonal space-time block code (DQOSTBC) for four transmit antennas. A rate 1 full-diversity DQOSTBC for four transmit antennas is designed. The code matrix changes according to different information exchange error cases, so full diversity is maintained even if not all information exchange is correct. We also perform analysis of the pairwise error probability. The performance analysis indicates that the proposed rate 1 DQOSTBC outperforms rate 1/2 DOSTBC for four transmit antennas at the same transmission rate, which is confirmed by the simulation results.

We consider cooperative networks of one source, four relays, and one destination. Each of them has a single antenna. The four relays use a proposed full rate distributed quasi orthogonal space time block code (DQOSTBC) scheme. If the channel state between the source and a relay is above a threshold, we select the elements of the DQOSTBC matrix to be the decode-and-forward (DAF) type; if it is below the threshold, the corresponding elements are the amplify-and-forward (AAF) type. Thus the proposed scheme is a DQOSTBC matrix with embedded adaptive DAF/AAF elements. The bit error rate (BER) simulation results show that the proposed DQOSTBC is approximately 7 dB better than the traditional DQOSTBC (all matrix elements are fixed as DAF type) at a BER of $10^{-3}$ because traditional DQOSTBC loses full diversity due to errors in the information received. The proposed DQOSTBC is about 3 dB better than the rate 1/2 DOSTBC also proposed with adaptive DAF/AAF matrix elements at a BER of $10^{-3}$ at the same spectral efficiency of 2 bits/s/Hz.

For non-relaying cooperative networks, the previous work proposed a distributed space-time block code (STBC) scheme considering information exchange errors in two-user cooperative networks. We propose a distributed Hybrid multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Transceiver scheme (HMT) considering information exchange errors in three-user cooperative networks. For relaying cooperative networks, the previous work also proposed an un-coded demodulation and forward relay and considering demodulation errors in the relay in two-user cooperative networks. We propose the relay-assisted distributed HMT scheme considering information exchange errors in 3-user cooperative networks, the differences are that our scheme has 3×2 HMT with transmit antenna selection in source-to-relay, source-to-destination, and relay-to-destination links, but the previous scheme has the 2×2 un-coded schemes in these three links. For both non-relaying and relaying scenarios, the simulation results show the proposed schemes have lower bit error rate (BER) than the previous schemes at the same 4 bits/sec/Hz transmission rate.

In this study, LDPC codes based low power multi-user CDMA architecture is proposed. Also, a modified Min-Sum algorithm for LDPC Decoder design is built and used in the proposed architecture. Min-sum iterative decoder has a reduced complexity in terms of architecture-algorithm transformation, compared to other LDPC Decoding algorithms. The architecture is designed for LDPC encoder and the variants of Min-sum decoder. The architecture is synthesized on Xilinx and Synopsys tool targeted to 90 run device. It is found from the synthesis report of the proposed architecture that it reduces the area and power overhead when compared with the conventional architecture design.

In this paper, performance of a novel analytic model of direct sequence code division multiple accesses (DS-CDMA) using diversity with maximal ratio combining (MRC) scheme is observed under the influence of multipath Rayleigh fading and multi-access interference (MAI) varying different system parameters and properties of PN sequences. The analysis presents a mathematical expression for bit error rate (BER) of the novel DS-CDMA model using diversity with MRC when signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) per bit follows a chi-square distribution. Performance results are evaluated in terms of average bit error rate (BER) at the output of MRC receiver by averaging the conditional BER over the probability density function (pdf) of signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR). In addition to that the receiver sensitivity of the model is observed for different transmit and receive diversity in a proposed multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system model varying Rayleigh fading co-efficient. Variants of simulation result at various cases are also analyzed.

The scope of this paper is to simulate and analyse the effect of Rayleigh flat fading on the performances of the decorrelating multiuser detector (MUD) when grey-type images are transmitted through a CD/CDMA system. To reduce the fading effects Multiple - Input Single/Multiple - Output (MISO, MIMO) radio channels will be taken into consideration and the received images will be compared with the original ones using three metrics, namely: the bit error rate, the peak signal-to-noise ratio and the structural similarity index.

This paper presents the results obtained by a new multiuser detector based on the Projection Onto Convex Sets (POCS) deconvolution algorithm, in comparison with those obtained by the decorrelating detector, when the channel is affected by the flat Rayleigh fading and gray images are transmitted through the system. All the users transmit their information with the same power, but the spreading codes are correlated. We will investigate the fading effect on the received images and the impact of the cross-correlation of the spreading codes on the quality of the received images. In the end, several conclusions are highlighted, with respect to the level of performance achieved.

In this paper, we study the asymptotic spectral efficiency (ASE) of the uplink multiple-input-multiple-output direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (MIMO-CDMA) systems supporting multiple users, when assuming communications over flat-fading channels with arbitrary correlation in the spatial domain. In the MIMO-CDMA systems considered, the system-channel-related matrix expressed by H is a block random matrix, whose entries may be correlated due to the spatial correlation. In this paper, the theory of operator-valued free probability is employed to derive the approximate asymptotic eigenvalue distribution (AED) of the correlation matrix RH = HH H, where the size of the block matrix H tends to infinity. Based on the approximate AED, the spectral efficiency (SE) performance of multiuser MIMO-CDMA systems is studied by both analysis and simulations. Our simulation and numerical results show that the corresponding ASE is, in general, capable of providing very good prediction of the SE achieved by the practical MIMO-CDMA systems.

Iterative Kalman channel estimation and parallel interference cancellation of synchronous CDMA mobile radio channels were analyzed. The proposed scheme avoids the complexity of the decorrelator in front of the Kalman channel estimator. It was found to have a better performance as compared to the previously used scheme.

Vertical Bell Laboratories Layered Space-Time (V BLAST) detection followed by a full parallel interference cancellation (full PIC) or a constant-weight partial parallel interference cancellation (CW-PPIC) scheme has been proposed. However, its performance degrades when the received power of the antenna is unbalanced and/or the system is heavily loaded. Therefore, V-BLAST is proposed, followed by fuzzy adaptive partial parallel multistage detection for MIMO systems. The simulation results show that the error probability of this proposed method is better than that of V-BLAST followed by full PIC or CW-PPIC schemes.

While the deeper meaning of these measures will be truly understood only after their more formal definitions are presented in the chapters that follow, the introduction of these terms here serves to illustrate the various possibilities that exist, depending on both need and relative ease of evaluation.

This paper is motivated by the need for fundamental understanding of ultimate limits of bandwidth efficient delivery of higher bit-rates in digital wireless communications and to also begin to look into how these limits might be approached. We examine exploitation of multi-element array (MEA) technology, that is processing the spatial dimension (not just the time dimension) to improve wireless capacities in certain applications. Specifically, we present some basic information theory results that promise great advantages of using MEAs in wireless LANs and building to building wireless communication links. We explore the important case when the channel characteristic is not available at the transmitter but the receiver knows (tracks) the characteristic which is subject to Rayleigh fading. Fixing the overall transmitted power, we express the capacity offered by MEA technology and we see how the capacity scales with increasing SNR for a large but practical number, n, of antenna elements at both transmitter and receiver. We investigate the case of independent Rayleigh faded paths between antenna elements and find that with high probability extraordinary capacity is available. Compared to the baseline n = 1 case, which by Shannon’s classical formula scales as one more bit/cycle for every 3 dB of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) increase, remarkably with MEAs, the scaling is almost like n more bits/cycle for each 3 dB increase in SNR. Ultra-wideband wireless communications techniques have many merits, including an extremely simple radio that inherently leads to low-cost design, large processing gain for robust operations in the presence of narrowband inter- ference, covert operations, and fine time reso- lution for accurate position sensing. However, there are a number of challenges in UWB receiver design, such as capturing multipath energy, intersymbol interference especially in a non-line-of-sight environment, and the need for high-sampling-rate analog-to-digital converters. In this article we provide a comprehensive review of UWB multiple access and modulation schemes, and their comparison with narrow- band radios. We also outline issues with UWB signal reception and detection, and explore var- ious suboptimal low-complexity receiving schemes.

This letter proposes a vertical Bell Labs layered space-time (V-BLAST) coded direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS-CDMA) scheme in the frequency-selective fading environment and its blind channel identification algorithm. By exploiting an ESPRIT-like method and the singular value decomposition, the channels identification results are closed-form solutions. Moreover, the proposed scheme employs the precoding in the transmitter to eliminate the constraint of more receive antennas than transmit ones, required by most conventional V-BLAST codec schemes. Computer simulation results demonstrate the validity of this proposed scheme.

Diversity combining of multiple time varying and correlated fading branches is investigated for direct-sequence spread-spectrum systems. The correlated branches are modeled and estimated jointly as a vector autoregressive (VAR) process. The joint estimation is shown to provide performance gain over separate estimation of the fading branches. The parameter matrices of the VAR model are estimated via the method of expectation maximization (EM) with two algorithms. The first algorithm, using results from Kalman smoothing, provides a closed-form solution to the maximization problem in the iterative EM procedure. However, the iterative EM-Kalman algorithm operates repeatedly on a batch of training data and results in large storage requirements and long processing delays. To overcome these disadvantages, a new algorithm with only forward-time recursions is proposed that approximates the iterative EM solution and efficiently adapts to slowly changing Doppler spreads. As a result, the new algorithm significantly reduces memory and training sequence requirements. Through computer simulations, a near ideal bit-error rate performance is found for both algorithms, and the efficacy of the new adaptive algorithm for channels with changing Doppler spreads is demonstrated.

Recently, a training-based vector channel estimation scheme has been proposed for single-user CDMA systems with aperiodic spreading codes. In this paper, we extend it to the reverse link of multiuser MIMO CDMA system. We also use the generalized MMSE multiuser detector to suppress multiuser interference so then we can get good initial vector channel estimates for each user. In the data transmission period, we combine the generalized MMSE multiuser detector, the maximum likelihood (ML) MIMO detector, and vector channel prediction of next channel vectors. The simulation results show that the vector channel estimation outperforms scalar channel estimation in multiuser MIMO CDMA systems.
