The sclerophyllous syndrome is characterized by well-defined traits (evergreen coriaceous leaves, inconspicuous flowers, and fleshy fruits). It has been hypothesized that lineages displaying the sclerophyllous syndrome show lower speciation rates than non-sclerophyllous lineages after the establishment of the mediterranean climate. Daphne gnidium d...

In this study we assessed karyotype size and symmetry for a comprehensive taxonomic and geographic representation ofHelianthemum and reconstructed chromosome number evolution in the genus. Using root tips, we photographed mitotic metaphase spreads to obtain chromosome number, total haploid (monoploid) length of the chromosome set (THL), karyotype f...

Premise: Divergence of floral morphology and breeding systems are often expected to be linked to angiosperm diversification and environmental niche divergence. However, available evidence for such relationships remain idiosyncratic, due to different taxonomic, geographical and time scales. The Palearctic genus Helianthemum shows the highest divers...
Article
Background and aims: The Canary Islands have strong floristic affinities with the Mediterranean Basin. One of the most characteristic and diverse vegetation belt of the archipelago is the thermophilous woodland (between 200 and 900 m.a.s.l.). This thermophilous plant community consists of many non-endemic species shared with the Mediterranean Flor...

Molecular systematics requires the establishment of a robust phylogenetic framework including extensive geographical and taxonomic sampling. In this work, we proposed systematic changes in the genus Helianthemum based on phylogenetic trees obtained by both maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses of GBS data. The implications of these phylogenetic...

The Mediterranean Basin represents an attractive area for reliable reconstructions of the spatio-temporal evolution of plant lineages due to its great number of explosive radiations and well-known paleoecological history. The genus Helianthemum is one of the most representative plant lineages in the Mediterranean ecosystems due to its abundance, di...

The biogeographic history and the degree of environmental niche conservatism provide essential clues to decipher the underlying macroevolutionary processes of species diversification and to understand contemporary patterns of biodiversity. The genus Helianthemum constitutes an excellent case study to investigate the impact of the geo-climatic chang...

Background and aims: Several biogeographic models have been proposed to explain the colonization and diversification patterns of Macaronesian lineages. In this study, we calculated the diversification rates and explored what model better explains the current distribution of the 15 endemic species to the Canary Islands belonging to Helianthemum sec...

In this study, we explored if a species-rich Canarian lineage belonging to the genus Helianthemum has diversified following a stepping-stone model of dispersal (with or without ulterior intra-island speciation) vs. a model of inter-island dispersal to similar ecological zones. Our results provide evidences for both inter- and intra-island allopatri...

Helianthemum squamatum is a specialist gypsophile, the only species of a recently diverged lineage in subgenus Helianthemum characterized by having the lowest chromosome number in the genus (n = 5). With the hypothesis of great genome reorganization in the lineage of H. squamatum, we (1) modelled the evolution of the chromosome number in the genus...

A robust phylogenetic framework, in terms of extensive geographical and taxonomic sampling, well-resolved species relationships and high certainty of tree topologies and branch length estimations, is critical in the study of macroevolutionary patterns. Whereas Sanger sequencing-based methods usually recover insufficient phylogenetic signal, especia...

Unraveling the relationships between ecological, functional traits and genetic diversity of narrow endemic plants provide opportunities for understanding how evolutionary processes operate over local spatial scales and ultimately how diversity is created and maintained. To explore these aspects in Sierra Nevada, the core of the Mediterranean Betic-...

Helianthemum is the largest, most widely distributed and most taxonomically complex genus of the Cistaceae. To examine the intrageneric phylogenetic relationships in Helianthemum, we used sequence data from plastid DNA (ndhF, psbA-trnH, trnL-trnF) and the nuclear ITS region. The ingroup consisted of 95 species and subspecies (2 subgenera, 10 sectio...

INTRODUCTION Helianthemum is the largest and the most widely distributed genus in the family Cistaceae(120 taxa). It is characterized by complex systematics and taxonomy. The Old World genusHelianthemum has been considereda close relative of the New World genus Crocanthemum(Guzmán & Vargas, 2009), having even been treated as a single genus(Dunal, 1...

Integration of unexpected discoveries about charismatic species can disrupt their well-established recovery plans, particularly when this requires coordinate actions among the different governments responsible. The Critically Endangered Coronopus navasii (Brassica-ceae) was considered a restricted endemism to a few Mediterranean temporary ponds in...
