In the light of Industry 4.0, the field of Industrial Maintenance faces a large digital transformation, adopting Extended Reality (XR) technologies to aid industrial operations. For the manufacturing corporations that provide maintenance services, the efficiency of industrial maintenance plays a crucial role in the competitiveness and is tightly re...

Training in virtual reality (VR) is a valuable supplementing tool for advancing knowledge transfer that results in increased efficiency and accuracy of technicians in fieldwork. However, COVID-19 pandemic restrictions made it impossible for VR training centers to operate on a full scale, forcing traditional face-to-face learning sessions to become...

Technical documentation creation is a collaborative process involving several departments in R&D. Even though virtual reality (VR) has been demonstrated to facilitate industrial collaboration and advance the product development lifecycle in earlier studies, it has not been utilized for technical documentation review and risk assessment processes in...

Virtual Reality (VR) is a critical emerging technology in industrial contexts, as it facilitates collaboration and supports the product development lifecycle. However, its broad adoption is constrained by complex and high-cost integration. The use of VR among devices with various immersion and control levels may solve this obstacle, and increase th...

With the fourth industrial revolution, Industry 4.0, many work tasks are becoming knowledge intensive. At the forefront of the change are workers that are already mobile, working in the field with customers. We describe the human-centred design process that resulted in the Mobile Service Technician 4.0 concept. The concept illustrates how industria...
Thesis
Augmented reality (AR) technology merges digital information into the real world. It is an effective visualization method; AR enhances user's spatial perception skills and helps to understand spatial dimensions and relationships. It is beneficial for many professional application areas such as assembly, maintenance and repair. AR visualization help...
Conference Paper
This paper presents key findings on user perception of an early AR home design product concept, which combines features of social media, augmented reality (AR) and 3D modelling. In total, there were 241 respondents for the scenario-based survey. In addition, some special co-design sessions were conducted to develop the concept with the target group...
Conference Paper
In this paper, we describe how hybrid media will change print product's value chain and what kind of opportunities it brings to print media in the future. We interviewed 20 actors of Finnish advertising and media business in order to find out, what kind of opportunities they see that augmented reality (AR) and hybrid media in general bring forward,...

In this paper we describe a co-design process and implementation requirements of an interactive interior design service system. To gain design information for the system we studied two focus groups that were composed of designers, bloggers and serious amateurs in the field of interior design - the estimated critical users of the forthcoming service...

Augmented Reality (AR) employs computer vision, image processing and computer graphics techniques to merge digital content into the real world. It enables realtime interaction between the user, real objects and virtual objects. AR can, for example, be used to embed 3D graphics into a video in such a way as if the virtual elements were part of the r...
Technical Report
Full-text available
The aim of the study is to research and develop new concepts in the context of advertising in media and for involving media users in creating and sharing advertisements. In this task, we develop methods to study possibilities for combining social media features with augmented reality (AR) elements in real es-tate marketing and interior design. Augm...
Conference Paper
In augmented reality, marker-based tracking is the most common method for camera pose estimation. Most of the markers are black and white patterns that are visually obtrusive, but they can be hidden from the video using image inpainting methods. In this paper, we present a computationally efficient approach to achieve this. We use a high-resolution...
Conference Paper

This paper presents a methodology and a system for augmented reality aided as-sembly work. We concentrate in particular on the requirements on information processing and data flow for implementing augmented assembly systems in real life production environments. A pilot case with an augmented assembly task at the Finnish tractor company Valtra is de...
Conference Paper
Full-text available
In this paper, a multimodal system for augmented reality aided assembly work is designed and implemented. The multimodal interface allows for speech and gestural input. The system emulates a simplified assembly task in a factory. A 3D puzzle is used to study how to implement the augmented assembly system to a real setting in a factory. The system i...
Conference Paper
Full-text available
In this paper, we describe the demonstration system in which a wooden 3D puzzle is assembled using an augmented reality system. The 3D puzzle describes a simplified assembly task in a factory. The 3D puzzle is a means to study how to implement an augmented assembly system to a real setting in a factory and explore the advantages and disadvantages o...

We describe a range of Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR) solutions applied during the planning and construction of VTT' s new head offices, the Digitalo (" Digital House") in Espoo, Finland. During the building phase as well as in later evaluations 2003-2006, the various approaches used for Digitalo' s visualisation included: radiosity renderin...

We describe a number of Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR) solutions applied during the planning and construction of VTT's Digitalo offices in Espoo, Finland. During the building phase as well as in later evaluations 2003-2006, the applied methods included: radiosity rendering radiosity rendering by still images; immersive virtual reality visual...
Conference Paper
In this paper, we present a method for generating a texture for hiding a marker in augmented reality applications. The texture is generated using the neighbourhood of the detected marker area in the image, which enables photorealistic results. The method presented here shows clear potential for real time use.

In this paper, we present a system for Augmented Reality interior design based on digital images. The system can be used with an ordinary PC and a digital camera: no special equipment is required. Once placed in the image, virtual objects may be scaled, moved and rotated freely. In addition, the layout can be stored in file for later adjustment. We...

Pointing is a natural way of communicating. Children in all cultures use pointing inherently. Attaching tags to our environment enables interaction by pointing. Visual tags are a good choice when low-cost and easy production are the issues. Adding visual markers to printed media adds a new dimension to it. A magazine can have direct links to web-pa...
