Abstract and Figures

In order to satisfy the information needs of the intended receivers information design comprises analysis, planning, presentation and understanding of a message—its content, language and form. Regardless of the selected medium, a well designed information material will satisfy aesthetic, economic, ergonomic, as well as subject matter requirements. Information design is a multidisciplinary , multi-dimensional and worldwide consideration with influences from areas such as language, art and aesthetics, information, communication, behaviour and cognition, business and law, as well as media production technologies. In this paper I have brought together three presentations from international conferences in 1998 (Pettersson, 1998a, b, and c).

To investigate the development of visual literacy, data was gathered three times during a year-long study in which fifth grade children talked and wrote about picture books, as part o an experimental course of study which introduced children to visual elements. The paper reports results in terms of differences in quantity of language produced by urban and sub children, as well as differences between boys and girls, diversity of language, and ways the nature of the assignments influenced writing outcomes. Results should interest teachers and f urban curriculum specialists in developing visual literacy curricula in which picture books are used as a way of helping develop children’s written language.

This book contains several hundred displays of complex data. Suggestions and examples are given for methods of enhancing dimensionality and density for portrayal of information. The first chapter outlines methods of moving away from single dimensional layout. Through the use of multi-dimensional images, greater clarity can be achieved and amount of information displayed increased. The following chapters cover the use of micro-macro design to illustrate detail, the layering of information and colour. The final chapter covers the display of space and time data. Examples used to illustrate the techniques covered include maps, the manuscripts of Galileo, timetables, dance movement notations, aerial photographs, electrocardiograms and computer visualisations. -R.C.Medler

Knowledge is a power in the information technology. However, traditional teaching is expensive and slow. With the emergence of new technologies, learning has become more productive. In companies, centralized training is now giving way to distributed, 'just-in-time' learning resulting to increased flexibility, better retention and lowered costs. In schools and colleges, students benefits from the Internet, Lotus Notes, exchange E-mail, peruse multimedia CD-ROMS and perform simulations. These techniques make education more cost-effective.

Research in document design suggests guidelines that both writers and designers can apply to make their publications easier for readers to understand and use. The author discusses the merging roles of writers and graphic designers, and provides some guidelines that document designers can use to reveal and reinforce the structure of a text. The article serves as a refresher for experienced technical writers and as a primer for those writers who are new to the field of document design.
