Inhibitory effect of buprofezin on the larval growth and development of Spodoptera litura (F.)

Abstract

Effectiveness of buprofezin (Award 40 SC) was evaluated against 2nd instar larvae of Spodoptera litura (F.) under laboratory conditions to analyse the growth and development at three concentrations viz., 200, 400, and 600 ppm with three application methods (direct or topical, indirect or leaf-dip and combined). Observations were made at 3 and 7 days after treatment and compared with untreated control. The results revealed that buprofezin significantly inhibited the larval weight, length and width, and the effect was dose, time and method dependent. Maximum (29.41%) weight reduction was observed with 600 ppm in combined application method, and it was followed by leaf-dip (16.10%) and topical application methods (13.80%). Similarly, 20.89% length and 19.58% width were inhibited when larvae were treated with 600 ppm through combined application method. The next best result was found from 400 ppm and leaf-dip application method. The dose at 200 ppm and topical application methods were found to be the least effective.

Spodoptera frugiperda Smith (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a polyphagous pest that has gained importance in soybean cultivation in recent years, due to the damage it causes to leaves and pods. The objective of this work was to evaluate the non-target effect of insecticides recommended and used to control Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) biotype B on S. frugiperda. The experimental design was entirely randomized with five treatments and fifty replications. The treatments were: 1. negative control (distilled water), 2. positive control (lufenuron), 3. buprofezin, 4. pyriproxyfen, and 5. diafenthiuron. In each replicate, one caterpillar was placed in a plastic cup, where sprayed soybean leaves with the maximum dosage of insecticides recommended for B. tabaci were placed.The treatments were evaluated daily during all stages: larval, pupal, and adult emergence and fecundity. The results obtained for larval mortality showed that diafenthiuron aimed 100% control, followed by pyriproxyfen with 28% and buprofezin with 12%. The duration of the larval period of the insects exposed to pyriproxyfen and buprofezin were longer compared to the control. While the biological parameters of pupae were found that pyriproxyfen caused lower pupal formation rate and higher pupal mortality, followed by buprofezin. In adult emergence, pyriproxyfen showed the lowest rate with 13.8% and the highest percentage of deformed adults with 60%. Thus, it was possible to conclude that the insecticides under study cause S. frugiperda mortality or effects on its biological patterns.

This study on the population dynamics of Spodoptera exigua (F.) and S. litura (F.) in soybean was done with observations made from 10 days after germination of the crop for two years. The results revealed that these pests are more abundant from July to August- Spodoptera litura (F.) occurred from the first week of July with occurrence of adults increasing with the growing season, and ending with the maturity of the crop. Amongst the current, 1st lag and 2nd lag week weather parameters, the occurrence of adults of S. exigua revealed a significant positive correlation with minimum temperature (r=0.716), evening relative humidity- RH (r=0.535), sunshine (0.621) and wind speed (0.661). Maximum temperature and wind speed exhibited a significant negative correlation with incidence of males of S. litura whereas, morning and evening RH were positively correlated with the incidence at 1-lag and 2-lag weeks. The incidence of larvae of S. litura was significantly influenced by morning RH (r=0.783) in the 2-lag week. The regression equation indicated that an increase in 1 mm rainfall decreased the male moth catches of S. exigua; while, incidence of larva was significantly affected with increase in 1% of morning RH; and incidence of S. litura larvae was related with maximum temperature of 1oC.

Comparative studies of the effects of two compounds, tebufenozide (an ecdysone agonist) and lufenuron (an insect growth regulator inhibiting chitin synthesis), were conducted on Spodoptera littoralis (Boisduval, 1833). The compounds, orally administered, caused larval mortality proportional to the concentrations in the food source. Tebufenozide initiated precocious molting, and lufenuron, and inhibited chitin synthesis. In both cases, larvae were unable to complete the molting process and died in the old larval cuticle. Larvae contaminated by sublethal doses completed their development to adulthood. Lufenuron is more active than is tebufenozide. LD-50 for lufenuron is 0.0001ppm and for tebufenozide 0.001ppm. Topical application of the test compounds to eggs caused dose- and agedependent inhibition of embryonic development. Application of tebufenozide in the second half of embryogenesis caused precocious molting of eclosed larvae of the 1st instar. Some morphological changes in the process of larval-pupal transformation were also observed. Tested compounds also reduced reproduction in adult individuals that had been treated by the tested compounds in the larval stage.

The control threshold density of the tobacco cutworm Spodoptera litura was determined separately in eggplants and sweet peppers cultivated in vinyl-houses during the winter.A vinyl-house was divided into small plots and different numbers of egg masses of S. litura were artificially placed on the plants in each plot. A linear relationship was found between the yields of total fruits and marketable fruits, and an index of plant injury, F, which represents the total amount of plant material consumed by larvae. Assuming 10% of the maximum yield as the critical level of yield loss, the tolerable injury thresholds in terms of this index were calculated as 43 and 49 for the marketable fruit yield of eggplants and sweet peppers, respectively. These values corresponded to 4.6 and 15.4 individuals of S. litura hatchlings per m2, or 0.8 and 2.6 egg masses per 100 m2, respectively. © 1977, JAPANESE SOCIETY OF APPLIED ENTOMOLOGY AND ZOOLOGY. Lufenuron (Match 5%) was tested at the concentrations (0.0001 and; 0.00001 μl) on the growth, development and chitin synthesis of Spodoptera littorais larvae (Boisd.). The results showed that Lufenuron treated larval instars were profoundly growth inhibited accordingly the weight gain was drastically reduced. Lufenuron exhibited an inhibitory effect on the adult emergence after treatment with both concentration levels. Both concentrations caused higher mortality in larval stage in the 5 th than in the 6 th instar larvae. Moreover, Lufenuron had a latent effect on egg hatchability was strongly observed, with the average being 44.76 and 53.24 % for 5 th instar larvae treated with 0.0001 and 0.00001 μl respectively. The histological examinations showed highly histopathological disturbances in the body wall cells of 6 th larval instar (after treatment of 5 th larval instar by 0.0001μl Lufenuron) showed destruction in the cuticle layers, fissures in the endocuticle and irregular distribution of the hypodermal cells.

An experiment was conducted to obtain information on the estimation of the reduction of yield of bidi tobacco due to different degrees of infestation by leaf eating caterpillar, Prodenia litura F. It was found that the reduction in yield was to an extent of 23.4, 44.2 and 50.4 per cent when the plants were infested with 2, 4 and 8 larvae per plant respectively, which gave a financial loss of Rs. 489.60 to Rs. 1,053.45 per hectare at Rs. 1.50 per kg., the average price of tobacco during the years under experiment.

1-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-(2,6-dichlorobenzoyl)-urea, PH 60-38 and 1-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-(2,6-difluorobenzoyl)-urea, PH 60-40, are representatives of a new class of insecticides with an unprecedented mode of action. Susceptibility of insect species of different orders is demonstrated and the compounds are expected to be quite safe towards mammals. The compounds are stomach poisons and they are not plant systemic. Their insecticidal activity demonstrates itself mainly as a failure to moult or pupate, resulting in death. Histological examination revealed the cause of this failure to be a defect in the process of cuticle deposition.
