AWestern blot assay for identification of 26 kDa and/or 8 kDa antigens in a crude saline extract (CSE) of Taenia solium metacestodes, previously developed for human cysticercosis, was evaluated for use with pigs. The test population used for assay standardisation consisted of 45 cysticercotic pigs (5 pigs positive by necropsy and 40 selected by tongue palpation and LL-Gp immunoblot but not confirmed by necropsy), 48 pigs with heterologous infections and 40 negative controls from endemic and non-endemic areas. The test detected 93% of the cysticercotic group and was 100% specific. In a field study this antigen preparation was compared by immunoblot with antibody recognition for Gp13-50 antigens in a lentil±lectin semi-purified glycoprotein extract of T. solium (LL-Gp). The seroprevalence to CSE antigen was slightly lower (26/75) when compared to LL-Gp (29/75) and this represented a non-significant difference. The CSE Western blot assay was used to assess seroprevalence of T. solium cysticercosis in pig populations in the state of Yucatan, Mexico. A total of 1099 pigs sampled at random from 25 villages revealed a seroprevalence of 23% (253/ 1099). Seroprevalence in intensively reared, farmed pigs was 2% (7/228). In comparison with farmed pigs, the seroprevalence was 33% (172/513) in free-roaming backyard pigs (ORˆ13.86,CIˆ4.07±47.22, p<10 ÿ6) and 25% (74/98) in semi-confined backyard pigs (ORˆ14.03, CIˆ5.60± 35.16, p<10 ÿ6). There was no significant difference in seroprevalence by sex (pˆ0.23). Seroprevalence decreased with age ( 2-test for linear trendˆ7.803, p<0.006). Results of this study demonstrate that the CSE Western blot can be applied for reliable immunodiagnosis of T. solium cysticercosis in pigs. Furthermore, variation in pig husbandry in Yucatan indicated significantly higher exposure to cysticercosis in free-roaming backyard pigs compared to intensively reared animals from the same area. # 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. The prevalence of intestinal parasites in dogs and factors associated were studied in a rural community of Yucatan (southern Mexico), with special attention to those gastrointestinal parasites potentially transmitted to man. One hundred thirty dogs from 91 households were studied. Fecal samples were processed by the centrifugation-flotation and the McMaster techniques. To determine factors associated with zoonotic parasites in dogs, univariate analysis was performed, using sex, age, and body condition as independent variables. Variables with p < 0.2 were analyzed by a logistic regression. Of 130 dogs, 104 were positive for the presence of intestinal parasites, representing a prevalence of 80%. Eggs of four species of helminths (Ancylostoma caninum, Thichuris vulpis, Toxocara canis, and Dipylidium caninum) and coccidian oocysts were detected. A. caninum was the most prevalent parasite (73.8%), followed by T. vulpis (25.4%), T. canis (6.2%), D. caninum (2.3%), and coccidian oocysts (2.3%). The majority of dogs were infected by only one species of parasite (70/130, 53.8%). Mixed infection caused by two or three zoonotic parasites were discovered in 21.3% (30/130) and 3.1% (4/130), respectively. A. caninum showed the highest egg output (42.3% of dogs had ≥ 500 eggs per gram). Factors associated with zoonotic parasites were age (<2 years old; odds ratio = 5.30, p = 0.029) and body condition (poor body condition; odds ratio = 6.69, p = 0.026). In conclusion, young dogs from rural Yucatan, Mexico, with poor body condition had a higher prevalence of intestinal zoonotic parasites as these factors were associated with a higher risk of becoming infected.

The aim of the present study was to determine the factors affecting the prevalence of mange-mite infestations in stray dogs of Yucatán, Mexico. The study was carried out in 200 stray dogs of Mérida capital city of Yucatán, Mexico. Four samples (head, thoracic-abdominal area, extremities and ear) were taken from each animal by skin scraping and examined microscopically in 10% KOH solution to detect the presence of mites. Mites were also collected from the external ear canal of dogs using cotton-tipped swabs. The prevalence of different mite species was calculated. A primary screening was performed using 2xK contingency tables of exposure variables. All variables with P< or =0.20 were analyzed by a logistic-binomial regression. The overall prevalence was 34%. Demodex canis (23.0%) was the most frequent mite, followed by Sarcoptes scabei var. canis (7.0%) and Otodectes cynotis (3.5%). The following factors were found: body condition (bad, OR: 5.35, CI 95%: 1.66-17.3; regular, OR: 3.72, CI 95%: 1.39-9.99) and the presence of macroscopic lesions of dermatosis (OR: 42.80, CI 95%: 13.65-134.24).
