Cancer is considered a leading cause of death worldwide due to its high morbidity and mortality rate. Conventional treatments for cancer therapy, such as chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, have been hampered by their side effects. Natural product-derived plants have been used for decades to treat diseases. Compared to conventional therapy, natural pro...

Host genetic factors, such as the genes for various cytokines and adhesion molecules, play a significant role in determining susceptibility to malaria infection. Polymorphisms in host genes have been correlated with malaria infection in both African and Asian regions. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between both cytokin...

Diabetes mellitus is the most common chronic metabolic disorder and is considered one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality. The improperly-treated chronic hyperglycemia of diabetes has been related to several long-term complications and multiple organ failures, including nephropathy, which can lead to kidney failure, retinopathy with th...

Over the past decades, epidemiological studies have concluded that a diet rich in plant-derived products plays a pivotal role in human health. Fisetin (3,3’,4’,7-tetrahydroxyflavone) is a hydrophobic polyphenolic compound primarily found in edible plants (e.g. strawberry, blueberry, apple, grape, persimmon, kiwi, and cucumber). Various preclinical...

Background: Based on Basic Health Research (RISKESDAS) conducted by Ministry of Health, Indonesia, prediabetes prevalence tends to increase from 2007 until 2018. The numbers are relatively higher in rural than those in urban area despite of small discrepancies between the two (~ 2-4%). The purpose of this study was to identify urban-rural differen...

Abstract Cerebral malaria is a complication of Plasmodium falciparum infection and can cause death in humans. Plasmodium berghei ANKA (PbA) infection in C57BL/6 strain is widely used for cerebral malaria research. However, research to assess differences in brain histopathology, TNFα levels and the degree of parasitemia in Swiss websters infected...

Mass treatment and evaluation surveys of filariasis transmission were strategies in the control of lymphatic filariasis. Mass Drug Administration (MDA) stop period surveillance is required for five years before obtaining a lymphatic filariasis elimination certificate. The aim of conducting the study was to evaluate the activities of lymphatic filar...

Background The Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis recommends the transmission assessment survey (TAS) as the preferred methodology for determining whether mass drug administration can be stopped in an endemic area. Because of the limited experience available globally with the use of Brugia Rapid™ tests in conducting TAS in Brugia sp...

Background: Sympatric existence of Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax, and the practice of malaria treatment without microscopic confirmation suggest that the accidental treatment of vivax malaria with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) is common. Methods: In this study, the frequency distribution of alleles associated with SP resistance wer...

Until 2012, four Plasmodium knowlesi malaria cases had been found in South Kalimantan. Objectives of this study were to determine the proporsion of P. knowlesi among microscopically positive malaria cases, clinical symptoms and morphology of P. knowlesi. This study is conducted in Central Kalimantan and South Kalimantan in 2013-2014. Samples were m...

Positive control of Plasmodium spp. is needed in identification of malaria species using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) method. The limitedness of malaria positive control encourages us to develop the cloning method to multiply Plasmodium spp. DNA particularly P.vivax, P. malariae, and P. ovale that are still unable to be cultured continuously. DN...

Drug resistant malaria poses an increasing public health problem in Indonesia, especially eastern Indonesia, where malaria is highly endemic. Widespread chloroquine (CQ) resistance and increasing sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) resistance prompted Indonesia to adopt artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) as first-line therapy in 2004. To help...
