Building on the theme "Earth as the only living planet", this book introduces students to the dynamic relationship that has existed for billions of years between the planet itself and the life that has uniquely evolved on its continuously changing surface. In particular, it discusses the planetary features and processes of Earth that support, influence and change living things in their various forms and manifestations, with particular focus on human beings. While compliant with the curricular content, performance standards and learning competencies set by the Department of Education, the book highlights Philippine Science in featuring the scientific achievements of Filipino scientists. This feature is intended to motivate Filipino students to pursue challenging careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) needed in building a "globally competitive and innovative science nation". Finally, the student-centered activities contained in the book promote scientific literacy and caters to the characteristics and preferences of our 21st century learners. The ultimate message of the book is that Earth is the only home for human beings and it must be protected for the survival of life.

The student-centered activities contained in the book promote biological literacy and also respond to the emerging characteristics and preferences of our 21st century learners who will build a "globally competitive and innovative science nation."

Fully compliant with the content, performance standards and learning competencies set by the Department of Education, the content and student-centered activities that the book provides are open to the emerging characteristics and preferences of our 21st century learners. Finally, the book helps students to realize that the Earth is both ancient and young because it continually renews itself as it quietly travels around the sun in an expanding universe.

Gynura nepalensis DC: A Potential Wonder Medicinal Plant

This is a review of published studies on Gynura nepalensis DC, a medicinal plant locally known as Philippine Ashitaba. Although it is utilized as an ethnomedicine to cure a wide array of human sickness such as indigestion, diabetes, cuts/wounds, cough, asthma, kidney stones, urinary tract bleeding, hepatitis, gall bladder stones, hemorrhoids, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, blood poisoning, ... [Show full abstract] septicemia, fertility problems, skin allergy, rheumatism, high cholesterol levels, and high-low blood pressure, only its hypolipidaemic, hepatoprotective, antimutagenic, antioxidant and radioprotective potentials using either ethanolic or methanolic extracts have been directly investigated based on reported studies. There are no reported studies on the antibacterial, antifungal, and cytotoxic potentials of G. nepalensis DC extracts using other solvents like water, DCM, DMSO, chloroform, ether, and others. Thus, many of the pharmacological claims that are based on anecdotal report need scientific validation. Preliminary phytochemical screening of the leaf extract of the plant indicated the presence of alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, steroid (with 2-deoxysugars), flavonoid (leucoanthocyanin), and saponin. G. nepalensis DC is often taken as similar with other Gynura spp. No molecular studies to establish the DNA barcode or fingerprint of the plant have been reported. Therefore, since many cures have been attributed to G. nepalensis DC, making it a potential wonder medicinal plant, the scientific community needs to conduct more researches-bioassays, molecular studies, and chemical profiling-on this plant.

Phytochemical Constituents and Antimicrobial Activity of the Ethanol and Chloroform Crude Leaf Extra...

Context The study investigated the medicinal properties of Spathiphyllum cannifolium (Dryand. ex Sims) Schott as a possible source of antimicrobial compounds. Materials and Methods The phytochemical constituents were screened using qualitative methods and the antibacterial and antifungal activities were determined using agar well diffusion method. Results The phytochemical screening showed the presence of sterols, flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, glycosides, and tannins in both ethanol and chloroform leaf extracts, but triterpenes were detected only in the ethanol leaf extract. The antimicrobial assay revealed that the chloroform leaf extract inhibited Candida albicans, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, whereas the ethanol leaf extract inhibited E. coli, S. aureus, and B. subtilis only. The ethanol and chloroform leaf extracts exhibited the highest zone of inhibition against B. subtilis. The antifungal assay showed that both the leaf extracts have no bioactivity against Aspergillus niger and C. albicans. Conclusions Results suggest that chloroform is the better solvent for the extraction of antimicrobial compounds against the test organisms used in this study. Findings of this research will add new knowledge in advancing drug discovery and development in the Philippines.
