Auditory-induced bounce perception when visual trajectories are inconsistent with motion reversal

An auditory click at the point of coincidence in stream/bounce displays produces a robust bias toward bounce perception. We investigated whether this bias would be observed when the objects' trajectories have a spatial offset. In experiment 1, the targets (subtending 51.2 min of arc), presented on a 2-D display, were vertically offset from one another from 0 to 25.6 min of arc. In experiment 2, stereoscopically presented targets were displaced in depth relative to each other (disparity ranged from 0 to 25.6 min of arc). In both experiments, offset conditions were combined with two auditory conditions: sound at coincidence, no sound at coincidence. Observers indicated whether the targets appeared to stream past or bounce off of one another (reverse their direction of motion). When no sound was presented, streaming was seen in nearly 100% of the trials, regardless of spatial offset. When a sound was presented at the point of coincidence, bouncing was dominant and persisted with increasing 2-D and 3-D trajectory offsets. An auditory click modified the trajectory of the targets such that they appeared to make a 'U-turn' at the point of coincidence. Our results extend previous reports, showing that unambiguous visual displays can be perceptually modified by auditory stimulation.

How are multiple, multi-sensory stimuli combined for use in segmenting spatio-temporal events? For an answer, we measured the effect of various auditory or visual stimuli, in isolation or in combination, on a bistable percept of visual motion ("bouncing" vs. "streaming"). To minimize individual differences, the physical properties of stimuli were adjusted to reflect individual subjects' sensitivity to each cue in isolation. When put into combination, perceptual influences that had been equipotent in isolation were substantially altered. Specifically, auditory cues that had been strong when presented alone were greatly reduced in combination. Evaluation of alternative models of sensory integration showed that the state of the visual bistable percept could not be accounted for by probability summation among cues, as might occur at the level of decision processes. Instead, the state of the bistable percept was well predicted from a weighted sum of cues, with visual cues strongly dominating auditory cues. Finally, when cue weights were compared for individual subjects, it was found that subjects differ somewhat in the strategy they use for integrating multi-sensory information.

The psychometric function relates an observer’s performance to an independent variable, usually some physical quantity of a stimulus in a psychophysical task. This paper, together with its companion paper (Wichmann & Hill, 2001), describes an integrated approach to (1) fitting psychometric functions, (2) assessing the goodness of fit, and (3) providing confidence intervals for the function’s parameters and other estimates derived from them, for the purposes of hypothesis testing. The present paper deals with the first two topics, describing a constrained maximum-likelihood method of parameter estimation and developing several goodness-of-fit tests. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we deal with two specific difficulties that arise when fitting functions to psychophysical data. First, we note that human observers are prone to stimulus-independent errors (orlapses). We show that failure to account for this can lead to serious biases in estimates of the psychometric function’s parameters and illustrate how the problem may be overcome. Second, we note that psychophysical data sets are usually rather small by the standards required by most of the commonly applied statistical tests. We demonstrate the potential errors of applying traditionalX 2 methods to psychophysical data and advocate use of Monte Carlo resampling techniques that do not rely on asymptotic theory. We have made available the software to implement our methods.

Phenomenally strong visual illusions are described in which the motion of an object's cast shadow determines the perceived 3-D trajectory of the object. Simply adjusting the motion of a shadow is sufficient to induce dramatically different apparent trajectories of the object casting the shadow. Psychophysical results obtained with the use of 3-D graphics are reported which show that: (i) the information provided by the motion of an object's shadow overrides other strong sources of information and perceptual biases, such as the assumption of constant object size and a general viewpoint; (ii) the natural constraint of shadow darkness plays a role in the interpretation of a moving image patch as a shadow, but under some conditions even unnatural light shadows can induce apparent motion in depth of an object; (iii) when shadow motion is caused by a moving light source, the visual system incorrectly interprets the shadow motion as consistent with a moving object, rather than a moving light source. The results support the hypothesis that the human visual system incorporates a stationary light-source constraint in the perceptual processing of spatial layout of scenes.

When two objects move towards each other, coincide, then move away from each other, two possible perceptions can result: the objects can be seen to stream past one another or to bounce off of one another. In visual only displays, the predominant perception is streaming. If, however, a brief auditory stimulus is presented at or near the point of coincidence, the bias towards streaming is reversed and bouncing is predominantly reported. To the best of our knowledge, all previous studies on this phenomenon have employed luminance-defined motion displays (i.e. black discs or blocks on a light background). Here we show using dynamic random dot stereograms that stream/bounce audio-visual interactions are similar for luminance-defined and cyclopean displays. Observers viewed both types motion sequences (frame rate = 20Hz) in the presence or absence of a brief auditory tone. When present, the tone occurred 0, 100 or 250 ms before or after coincidence. At the end of each sequence observers indicated whether the targets appeared to stream past or bounce off of one another. Stimuli were presented 20 times each in random order. The presence of an auditory tone at or before the point of coincidence significantly promoted bounce perception in both cyclopean and luminance defined displays. Auditory tones presented 250 ms after coincidence failed to promote bouncing in luminance defined displays but continued to do so in cyclopean displays. Nevertheless, the pattern of responses was strikingly similar in both types of displays. Control experiments manipulating the duration of the post coincidence trajectory yielded virtually identical results for both display types and do not support a cognitive-bias explanation of the auditory induced bounce bias. Our data show, as has been previously conjectured, that auditory and visual cues are integrated to resolve stream/bounce motion displays at or beyond the point of binocular combination.

Adults who watch an ambiguous visual event consisting of two identical objects moving toward, through, and away from each other and hear a brief sound when the objects overlap report seeing visual bouncing. We conducted three experiments in which we used the habituation/test method to determine whether these illusory effects might emerge early in development. In Experiments 1 and 3 we tested 4-, 6- and 8-month-old infants’ discrimination between an ambiguous visual display presented together with a sound synchronized with the objects’ spatial coincidence and the identical visual display presented together with a sound no longer synchronized with coincidence. Consistent with illusory perception, the 6- and 8-month-old, but not the 4-month-old, infants responded to these events as different. In Experiment 2 infants were habituated to the ambiguous visual display together with a sound synchronized with the objects’ coincidence and tested with a physically bouncing object accompanied by the sound at the bounce. Consistent with illusory perception again, infants treated these two events as equivalent by not exhibiting response recovery. The developmental emergence of this intersensory illusion at 6 months of age is hypothesized to reflect developmental changes in object knowledge and attentional mechanisms.

The VideoToolbox is a free collection of two hundred C subroutines for Macintosh computers that calibrates and controls the computer-display interface to create accurately specified visual stimuli. High-level platform-independent languages like MATLAB are best for creating the numbers that describe the desired images. Low-level, computer-specific VideoToolbox routines control the hardware that transforms those numbers into a movie. Transcending the particular computer and language, we discuss the nature of the computer-display interface, and how to calibrate and control it.

The hypothesis that perceptual experience can be understood in terms of rule-based processing has strongly influenced recent theories of visual surface perception. However, many of the rules that these theories propose apply only in relatively restricted situations. I suggest that more general and robust principles for reducing perceptual ambiguity are available, such as the generic view principle (GVP) described here. According to the GVP, vision assumes that qualitative (e.g. topological) image structure is stable with respect to small changes of viewpoint. Some consequences of the GVP for visual surfaces, including illusory surfaces, are described. I also demonstrate the decisive role of real and illusory background surfaces in specifying the 3-D shape and layout of visual objects and scenes.

Recent findings suggest that the visual system is biased by its past stimulation to detect one direction of motion over others. Three experiments were designed to investigate whether this bias is mediated by the direction or by the velocity of the past stimulation, and whether this bias is offset by contradictory pattern or depth information. Observers were presented with two solid or random-dot patterns that moved across a display screen in antiphase. As the two patterns reached the center of the screen, they became superimposed in such a way that their subsequent directions were ambiguous. Results from experiment 1 showed that the probability of perceiving these patterns as continuing to move in the same directions was significantly greater when they moved at a constant velocity than when they moved at a variable velocity. Results from experiments 2 and 3 revealed that this directional bias was reversed only gradually as an increasing amount of contradictory pattern information was introduced, but that this reversal was quite abrupt when a relatively small amount of contradictory depth information was introduced. Collectively, these results suggest that a directional bias in the perception of moving patterns is mediated not only by the direction of the previous stimulation, but also by the velocity of that stimulation. Moreover, the analyses of pattern and motion information appear relatively independent during the early stages of visual processing, but the analyses of depth and motion information appear considerably more interdependent.

Identical visual targets moving across each other with equal and constant speed can be perceived either to bounce off or to stream through each other. This bistable motion perception has been studied mostly in the context of motion integration. Since the perception of most ambiguous motion is affected by attention, there is the possibility of attentional modulation occurring in this case as well. We investigated whether distraction of attention from the moving targets would alter the relative frequency of each percept. During the observation of the streaming/bouncing motion event in the peripheral visual field, visual attention was disrupted by an abrupt presentation of a visual distractor at various timings and locations (experiment 1; exogenous distraction of attention) or by the demand of an additional discrimination task (experiments 2 and 3; endogenous distraction of attention). Both types of distractions of attention increased the frequency of the bouncing percept and decreased that of the streaming percept. These results suggest that attention may facilitate the perception of object motion as continuing in the same direction as in the past.
