Disjunct distribution patterns in plant lineages are usually explained according to three hypotheses: vicariance, geodispersal, and long distance dispersal. The role of these hypotheses is tested in Urgineoideae (Hyacinthaceae), a subfamily disjunctly distributed in Africa, Madagascar, India and the Mediterranean region. The potential ancestral ran...

Questions

Question (1)
Question
Accepting that circumscription of taxonomic ranks is mostly a matter of preference, in some cases we have to decide how broad or narrow is the sense we accept for a given taxon. Currently, phylogenetic approaches are providing a solid basis from which taxa circumscription can be more consistently supported. However, in the particular case of genera we are currently seeing an increasing trent to accept broader groups whitin which many subgroups (subgenera, sections, etc.) proliferate. And the principal problem here is that the broader is the generated group (after merging previous seggregates) the more difficult is to defined it with regard to close relatives that now are very easy to include in the newly and broaderly circumscribed group. And all this is based on the argument of monophyly. Why should be generate broader genera (that are morphologically highly heterogeneous) by inclusion or morphologically (an usually also biogeographycally) well-defined groups, each one being also monophyletic? What advantages or inconveniences has any of those possible solutions (broader genera vs. narrower genera, or vice-versa), both being correct from a phylogenetic view?
