Two methods to analyzing survival data with clustered events are presented. The first method is a proportional hazards model which adopts a marginal approach with a working independence assumption. This model can be fitted by SAS PROC PHREG with the robust sandwich estimate option. The second method is a likelihood-based random effects (frailty) mo...

When perceived as threatening, social interactions have been shown to trigger the sympathoadrenal medullary system as well as the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis resulting in a physiologic stress response. The allostatic load placed on human health and physiology in the context of acute and chronic stress can have profound health consequences....
Article
Altered scapular kinematics is associated with shoulder pain. Resistance exercise is a common treatment; however, the effects of lifting an external load on scapular kinematics is limited. Understanding whether an external handheld load affects scapular kinematics in a healthy population can provide normal values utilized for comparison to individu...

While the relationship between exercise and life span is well-documented, little is known about the effects of specific exercise protocols on modern measures of biological age. Transcriptomic age (TA) predictors provide an opportunity to test the effects of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on biological age utilizing whole-genome expression...

Objective To evaluate the effectiveness of intraneural facilitation (INF) for the treatment of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). Methods This single-blind, randomized clinical trial enrolled patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and moderate-to-severe DPN symptoms below the ankle. Patients were randomly assigned to receive INF or sham treatme...
Article
Objective Kinesiophobia has been associated with deleterious biomechanical alterations during dual-limb landing tasks in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstructed females, however, no research has yet investigated single-limb tasks related to ACL injury. The aim of this investigation was to examine the relationship between kinesiophobia and bi...
Article
Purpose: To explore occupational, physical, and speech-language pathology therapists’ perceived effectiveness of telehealth and how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected their professional roles. Method: Participants were recruited for the study through a research flyer distrusted via postal mail, emails, social media, and national association website...
Article
Study design Cross-sectional; Controlled laboratory study. Objective To examine the associations among available hip flexion motion, lumbar extensor strength and peak lumbar flexion during a squat lift task. Summary of background data Lumbar spine flexion during lifting can result in increased strain on spinal structures. Although decreased avail...
Article
Weakness of the hip extensors and lumbar spine extensors has been proposed to contribute to greater demands on the lumbar spine during lifting. The purpose of the current study was to examine the associations among strength of the hip and lumbar spine extensors, lumbar spine extensor moments and lumbar paraspinal muscle activation during a squat li...

Objectives To assess the effectiveness of a program to implement long-term diet, lifestyle, and behavioral changes in bariatric surgery patients. Methods Sixteen subjects (age = 45.9 ± 11.5 years; BMI = 46.1 ± 8.3 kg/m2) participated in a comprehensive 36-week lifestyle-based program to promote weight loss before and after bariatric surgery. Durin...

Background: Chronic pain among individuals with cancer can adversely affect quality of life (QOL) and physical, social, and emotional functioning. Therapeutic horticulture has been shown to be effective for treating various medical conditions; however, the focus on cancer survivors with chronic pain is marginal. This study evaluated the effectivene...

For almost a century, the medical community has been intrigued with the potential health benefits of laughter, as the common phrase notes, “laughter is the best medicine”. However, the science underlying laughter and health is yet to be fully described. Objective We used electroencephalography (EEG) to explore the potential neurological benefits o...

Study Design: Randomized clinical trial with pre-test, post-test control group design. Objectives: To examine the immediate effects of cervical spinal manipulation (CSM) on serum concentration of biochemical markers (oxytocin, neurotensin, orexin A, and cortisol). Background: Several studies have found an association between spinal manipulation (SM...

Background Adenocarcinoma (AC) is the most common lung cancer among non-smokers, but few studies have assessed the effect of PM2.5 on AC among never smokers. The purpose of this study was to assess the association between ambient PM2.5 and incident lung AC in the Adventist Health and Smog Study-2 (AHSMOG-2), a cohort of 80,044 non-smokers (81% neve...

Survival analysis involves the modeling of time-to-event data whereby death or failure is considered an "event". The graphic presentation of Cox proportional hazards model using SAS PHREG is a significant tool which facilitates effective data exploration in survival analysis. The SAS PROC PHREG can generate some of the useful survival analysis plot...

Background: There is a positive association between ambient fine particulate matter ≤ 2.5 μm in aerodynamic diameter (PM2.5) and incidence and mortality of lung cancer (LC), but few studies have assessed the relationship between ambient PM2.5 and LC among never smokers. Objectives: We assessed the association between PM2.5 and risk of LC using t...
Article
Background: Particulate air pollution (PM2.5) has been linked to an increase in lung cancer (LC) incidence; however, there is limited knowledge about diet that may modify this association. Objectives: To assess possible effect modification of dietary pattern on the association between ambient PM2.5 and incident LC in single and two-pollutant model...

Background: The most common lung cancer among non-smokers is adenocarcinoma (AC). Most studies find an increased risk of lung AC associated with particulate air pollution but few studies have assessed the association among non-smokers. Objectives: To assess the association between ambient PM2.5 and risk of lung AC, in single and two-pollutant model...

Background: A few studies suggest an association between ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and mortality from lung cancer (LC), but the relationship is not well established for LC incidence. Objectives: To assess the association between incident LC and PM2.5 and ozone (O3), using the Adventist Health and Smog Study-2 (AHSMOG-2) cohort. Method...

The breast cancer is one of the widespread causes of mortality in today's world. The exact and precise diagnosis is considered as the vital point in the process of treatment. So, a lot of screening and diagnostic procedures regarding this issue have been proposed. Thermography considered as a widespread, safe, non-invasive, fast and economical proc...

Survival analysis involves the modeling of time-to-event data whereby death or failure is considered an "event". The graphic presentation of survival analysis is a significant tool which facilitates clear understanding of the underlying events. Two SAS ® procedures, LIFETEST and PHREG can generate survival analysis plots using the ODS graphics opti...

This paper will discuss the data collected about patients discharged from a geropsychiatry unit and their post-discharge survival rates. First, we will show methods to analyze the data arising from studies where the response variable is the length of time taken to reach a certain end-point, often death. The Kaplan-Meier methods, log rank test and C...
