Antecedents and consequences of basic versus career enrichment benefit satisfaction

Abstract

Using a sample of 250 medical technologists (MTs) over a four-year time period, this study presents initial evidence for differentiating two different facets of benefit satisfaction—basic and career enrichment. Basic benefit satisfaction exhibited stronger relationships to subsequent general benefit satisfaction, organizational withdrawal intent, and turnover behavior, while career enrichment benefit satisfaction exhibited a stronger relationship to subsequent affective organizational commitment. Purpose The business angels market dramatically changed the modus operandi and nature of business angels’ activity, evolving from lone investors to angel groups managed professionally. This paper aims to analyze the impact of angel perceived career development on angel satisfaction and, consequently, on their intention to continue investing. Design/methodology/approach A model was tested through covariance-based structural equation modeling (SEM) using AMOS based on data collected from 336 business angels from seven European countries. Findings The results highlight that: the perception of personal development is a decisive factor in pursuing the career of business angel; personal development has a higher explanatory power in angel career development than fostering innovation; and the perception of career development has positive impacts on angels’ job satisfaction and reinvestment intention. The paper ends with implications and guidelines for angels, gatekeepers and entrepreneurs, which may increase satisfaction with the angel experience and contribute to enriching business angel work. Research limitations/implications Cross-sectional self-reported data were used to analyze the results of this study. Originality/value To paper extends the body of knowledge of business angels’ perceived career development, with implications for business angels, which may increase satisfaction with angel experience and, therefore, contribute to enhancing business angels’ activity. Thus, this study provides a consistent reference for forthcoming studies regarding the career of business angels and their relationship with entrepreneurs.

This paper synthesizes the causal mechanism and intends to examine the relationship of leader-member ex change and employee ret enti on through the mediating effect of worklife balance. This framework is based on the social exchange theory and tokenism theory. The hypothesis was tested statistically by analyzing the responses from women empl oyees working in the Information Technology and Business Process Management (IT BPM) industry using SEM AMOS. The result motivates human resource managers to focus on enhancement of healthy leader-member exchange relationship that ensures retention of women talent.

This study aims to determine the relationship between dimensions of career enrichment and efficacy of physical education teachers in Bandar Abbas County. The statistical population included all physical education teachers in Bandar Abbas County in the academic year 2018-2019. The sample consisted of 136 individuals who were selected by the stratified random sampling technique. The data were collected in the field manner. The instrument of collecting data was a questionnaire about career enrichment and efficacy of teachers. Given r=0.33 and p=0.008, the statistical results indicated that there was a positive and significant relationship between autonomy at work and efficacy of physical education teachers. Similarly, there was a positive and significant relationship between career skills variety and efficacy of physical education teachers. Such a relationship was found between career importance and efficacy of physical education teachers. There was a significant relationship between career identity and efficacy of teachers. There was also a positive and significant relationship between providing feedback on career and efficacy of teachers.

p> Total Rewards Strategy has been used as a viable strategy to motivate and retain employees across sectors. It has also been widely studied by the scholars and researchers across the globe leading to a number of scales measuring total rewards measuring preferences, and perceptions, ignoring its satisfaction aspect. However, the existing scales have been found to display construct related weaknesses in terms of under-representation of total rewards as a multidimensional construct and measuring it as a reflective higher-order construct. Analyzing findings of literature review and factor analyses, the authors confirm total rewards as a second-order formative construct. The purpose of this study is to develop a valid and reliable measure of total rewards satisfaction (TRS) as a formative higher order construct. Different phases of quantitative validations were carried out with a new data set for each of the studies viz. content validity (n = 13 experts), exploratory factor analysis (n = 180) for determining factorial structure of the scale, first-order confirmatory composite analysis (n = 215) and second-order confirmatory analysis (n= 120) confirm a six-dimensional structure of 23-item TRS scale. The psychometric properties of the scale have also been reported. The scale demonstrates internal consistence, reliability and construct validity. </p

Özet: Son yıllarda araştırmacılar tarafından oldukça ilgi görmekte olan kariyer kavramları bu araştırmada ele alınmaktadır. Araştırma kapsamında kariyer kavramının iyimserlik ve uyumluluk boyutları incelenmektedir. Kariyer iyimserliği ve kariyer uyumluluğu konularında içerik analizi yöntemi uygulanarak, gelecekte yapılacak çalışmalara ışık tutmak amaçlanmıştır. Araştırma kapsamında, kariyer iyimserliği ve kariyer uyumluluğu konularında yayımlanmış lisansüstü tezler içerik ve yöntem biçimleri açılarından irdelenmektedir. Bu çalışmalara, Yükseköğretim Kurulu Başkanlığı'nın Tez Merkezi veri tabanı aracılığıyla ulaşılmıştır. Araştırmaya konu olan çalışmalar; yabancı kaynak oranı, kelime sayıları, anahtar kelimeler, kullanılan yöntem ve metin içerisinde geçen "kariyer iyimserliği" ve "kariyer uyumluluğu" kelime miktarları kriter alınarak içerik analiz yöntemi ile incelenmektedir. Araştırma sonucunda kariyer iyimserliği ve kariyer uyumluluğu kavramlarıyla ilgili yapılan araştırmaların oldukça kısıtlı olduğu belirlenmekle birlikte konuların gelecekte araştırmacılar tarafından daha çok rağbet göreceği düşünülerek sonuç bölümünde konular ile ilgili çeşitli öneriler sunulmaktadır. Abstract: Career concepts that have received much attention from researchers in recent years are discussed in this study. As part of the research, the optimism and career dimensions of the career concept are examined. The aim is to shed light on future studies by applying a content analysis method to career optimism and career adaptability. The research examines postgraduate work on career optimism and career adaptability in terms of method and content. The studies discussed have been achieved through the National Thesis Center of the Higher Education Council. Studies achieved; the method used has been analyzed with the content analysis method by using the criteria keywords, external resource rate, word numbers, and the words "career optimism" and "career adaptability" in the text. As a result of the research, it has been determined that the researches on the concepts of career optimism and career adaptability are very limited, and in the conclusion section, various suggestions are presented in the conclusion part, considering that the topics will be more popular by the researchers in the future.

More than ever, a company's competitiveness hinges on its ability to create, safeguard and leverage intellectual capital. Since this precious commodity resides almost exclusively in the minds of the organization's workforce - especially its engineers and scientists - helping these people build satisfying, long-term careers is key to retaining this all-important knowledge base. The Four Stages model, based on ongoing research begun in the 1970s, offers a framework for helping R&D professionals understand how they can continue to grow and add value over the long haul in today's flattened, delayered, technical organizations. Successfully applied in such companies as SmithKline Beecham, DuPont and Motorola, the Four Stages model shows how technical people can advance their careers without having to move into management roles.

Hom, Griffeth, and Sellaro's (1984) theoretical alternative to Mobley's (1977) turnover model was investigated in two studies. In Study 1, conceptual distinctions among model constructs and operationalizations of those constructs were validated. 206 nurses were surveyed, and constructs were assessed with multiple indicators. Although discriminating most constructs, structural equation modeling (SEM) identified a more parsimonious conceptualization in which a general construct underlies withdrawal cognitions. Other SEM analyses supported the indicators' construct validity and Hom et al.'s structural network. In Study 2, a longitudinal analogue of Hom et al.'s model was tested. A survey of 129 new nurses measured model constructs on three occasions. SEM disclosed that some causal effects in this model materialized contemporaneously, whereas others emerged after a lengthy time. Moreover, these causal effects systematically changed during newcomer assimilation. Implications for future research of turnover models are discussed.

Evidence is presented that (a) employees in an organization form global beliefs concerning the extent to which the organization values their contributions and cares about their well-being, (b) such perceived organizational support reduces absenteeism, and (c) the relation between perceived organizational support and absenteeism is greater for employees with a strong exchange ideology than those with a weak exchange ideology. These findings support the social exchange view that employees’ commitment to the organization is strongly influenced by their perception of the organization’s commitment to them. Perceived organizational support is assumed to increase the employee’s affective attachment to the organization and his or her expectancy that greater effort toward meeting organizational goals will be rewarded. The extent to which these factors increase work effort would depend on the strength of the employee’s exchange ideology favoring the trade of work effort for material and symbolic benefits.

This review analyzes how the changing nature of careers can be conceptualized by examining two major categories of careers research. Specifically, the developmental stage theories of Super (1957) and Levinson (1978, 1986, 1996) and the boundaryless career concept (Arthur & Rousseau, 1996) are used to assess our understanding of careers in today’s dynamic work environment. Directions for future research on existing topics, as well as five major recommendations for a new research agenda, are offered.

The relationships between two compensation system attributes-pay level and the level and flexibility of benefits-and the number of applicants attracted to a job, the rate at which they accept the job, and the length of time it takes a firm to fill positions were examined using data on the process of hiring tellers from 352 U.S. banks. Pay level was positively related to acceptance rate as hypothesized, but was unrelated to the number of teller applicants. Opposite to prediction, pay level was positively related to the length of time it took banks to fill teller positions. Benefits were not related to acceptance rate; however, some aspects of benefit programs were positively related to both number of applicants and the time it took to fill positions, and some were negatively related. The study of relationships between human resource practices and firm performance and the implications of the findings for compensation strategy and practice are discussed.

A model of employee benefit satisfaction, as a construct distinct from pay satisfaction, is proposed. Benefit satisfaction in this model contains two components: satisfaction with the costs incurred and satisfaction with the quality of the benefit package. Proposed determinants of benefit satisfaction in the model include employee needs, values and expectations; benefit availability and level of coverage; employee experience with package components; and cost structure of the benefit program. Employer communication, distributive justice and procedural justice are proposed as moderating variables. A discussion of the complete model is presented along with suggestions for future research.
