Abstract and Figures

The Ethernet passive optical network is being regarded as one of the best solutions for next-generation optical access solutions. In time-division multiplexing–passive optical network technology (TDM–PON), the dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) plays a crucial role in efficiently and fairly allocating the bandwidth between all users. Moreover, the quality of service (QoS) is also an essential requirement to support triple-play services. However, many proposed DBA mechanisms are still unable to solve the idle period problem and enhance the differentiated services (DiffServ), which will decrease the quality of overall system performance. Therefore, this paper proposes a generic QoS-aware interleaved dynamic bandwidth allocation (QA-IDBA). The QA-IDBA can operate adaptively bi-partitioned interleaved scheduling with QoS-based predictive limit bandwidth allocation (QP-LBA) and excess bandwidth reallocation (EBR) with the remaining bandwidth compensation scheme to eliminate the idle period, enhance QoS, and effectively reduce high-priority traffic delay and jitter. We conduct detailed simulation experiments with 16 and 32 optical network units (ONUs) to show the scalability. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithms can accommodate the growth of ONUs and achieve better overall quality of system performance even if the high-priority traffic is increasing from 20%, 40%, and 60%.

Bandwidth Allocation in Scalable EPONs

Abstract—The Ethernet passive optical network is being
regarded as one of the best solutions for next-generation
optical access solutions. In time-division multiplexing–passive
optical network technology (TDM–PON), the dynamic band-
width allocation (DBA) plays a crucial role in efficiently and
fairly allocating the bandwidth between all users. Moreover,
the quality of service (QoS) is also an essential requirement
to support triple-play services. However, many proposed DBA
mechanisms are still unable to solve the idle period problem
and enhance the differentiated services (DiffServ), which will
decrease the quality of overall system performance. There-
fore, this paper proposes a generic QoS-aware interleaved
dynamic bandwidth allocation (QA-IDBA). The QA-IDBA can

and 32 optical network units (ONUs) to show the scalability.
Simulation results show that our proposed algorithms can
accommodate the growth of ONUs and achieve better overall
quality of system performance even if the high-priority traffic
is increasing from 20%, 40%, and 60%.

I. INTRODUCTION
B
roadband access networks have become increasingly
important due to emerging services, such as IPTV, inter-
active gaming, video conferencing, and video on demand (VoD),
which demand a huge amount of bandwidth. However, in
many communities, last-mile [1] technology represents a major
remaining challenge because it is impractical to provide a
low-cost and high-speed solution for broadband access services
to individual subscribers in remote areas. The Ethernet
passive optical network (EPON) [2] appears to be one of the
best solutions for the broadband access networks due to its
simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and scalability. EPON provides
bi-directional transmissions. In downstream transmission,
the optical line terminal (OLT) has the entire bandwidth
downstream channel to broadcast the control messages and
the data packets through a 1:N passive splitter to each optical

network unit (ONU). In upstream transmission, all ONUs
share a common transmission channel toward the OLT, and
only a single ONU may upstream data in a transmission
time slot to avoid data collisions [3]. To emphasize, any data
collisions will cause a longer end-to-end delay and degrade
the system performance. Therefore, a proficient bandwidth
allocation algorithm has become a prominent concern in EPON
research, especially with the huge bandwidth demands and
critical applications.
Bandwidth allocation schemes can be divided into two
categories: fixed bandwidth allocation (FBA) [4] and dynamic
bandwidth allocation (DBA) [511]. In the FBA scheme, the
OLT pre-allocates the fixed time slot regardless of the actual
traffic arrival of each ONU; thus the upstream channel will
be occupied even if there is no frame to transmit. This can
result in long delays for all Ethernet frames buffered in the
other ONUs. Conversely, the DBA assigns the bandwidth
dynamically based on the queue state information received
from ONUs. However, in the traditional DBA scheme, the OLT
will begin bandwidth allocation after collecting all REPORT
messages which result in the idle period problem. During the
idle period, the ONUs are unable to transmit data. Therefore,
reducing the idle period in the DBA scheme becomes one of
the important issues to address in order to improve bandwidth
utilization.
Another problem with the DBA scheme is the inconsisten-
cies of the queue state due to the packets that are continuing
to arrive during the waiting time, which potentially leads to
longer delays. To address this problem, the predictive schemes
should be considered to resolve the packets arrival during
the waiting time and transmission time. Although exhaustive
queue size prediction mechanisms have been proposed (which
are credit based [7,8,11], linear based [5,8,9], proportion
based [9,12], waited based [4], and QoS based [6,7,10,13,14]),
these traffic prediction schemes are unable to provide feasible
solutions for differentiated services (DiffServ) and are also
unable to address the queue size inconsistency problem.
Moreover, sorting report messages scheduling schemes have
been proposed in [9,15,16]. Since these scheduling schemes
change the ordering of transmission, they are thus unable to
guarantee high-priority traffic jitter. Furthermore, QoS-based
mechanisms that can guarantee jitter [17] and fairness [18]
have been proposed, but still did not resolve the idle period
problem. To be emphasized, hybrid double polling algorithms
(DPAs) [7] are able to reduce the idle period problem by
switching between the double-phase polling and interleaved
polling states adaptively. However, the double-phase polling
state is still unable to solve the light-load penalty problem.
Then, when the idle period for subgroup A is longer than

the upstream period for subgroup B, the interleaved polling
is used to resolve the channel idle period. Nevertheless, the
interleaved polling state will cause unfairness and longer
packet delays. The hybrid DPA is based on limited bandwidth
allocation without DiffServ; thus it is unable to support QoS.
Despite the numerous DBA algorithms proposed for EPON
networks, there is no comprehensive study that can solve the
aforementioned problems.
Therefore, the aim of this work is to design a comprehensive
DBA mechanism, referred to as a generic QoS-aware inter-
leaved dynamic bandwidth allocation (QA-IDBA) mechanism,
to fill a gap in the literature on EPONs. The QA-IDBA
can operate in coordination with adaptively bi-partitioned
interleaved scheduling [19]. Thus, as one group is sending data
to the OLT, the bandwidth for another group is simultaneously
calculated and will adaptively reserve the bandwidth to the
next group. Consequently, the QA-IDBA mechanism not only
eradicates a common problem—idle time—but also resolves the
jitter problem with non-interruption transmission. Moreover,
this QA-IDBA mechanism is incorporated with QoS-based
predictive limit bandwidth allocation (QP-LBA) that assigns a
linear estimation credit to predict the arrival of traffic during
the waiting time for DiffServ and compare the prediction
index with the minimum guaranteed bandwidth. At last,
the strict priority allocation will guarantee and effectively
reduce the high-priority traffic delay to support QoS; excess
bandwidth reallocation (EBR) collects and reallocates the
excess bandwidth of light-load ONUs for extra demand to
heavy-load ONUs and will ensure prioritized service support
by reservation class selection. Furthermore, any remaining
available bandwidth can be adaptively adjusted between
two groups by the bandwidth compensation scheme. Finally,
simulation results show that our proposed mechanism has
better scalability than the hybrid DPA in terms of the packet
delay, throughput, jitter performance, ratio of packet loss, and
fairness in 16 or 32 ONUs.
The rest of this paper is organized as follows. Section II
presents the proposed generic QoS-aware interleaved DBA
mechanism. Simulation results are given in Section III and are
followed by conclusions in Section IV.
II. PROPOSED GENERIC QOS-AWARE INTERLEAVED
DBA MECHANISM
In this section, we present a comprehensive dynamic
bandwidth allocation mechanism referred to as the QA-IDBA
mechanism, which is shown in Fig. 1. The T

The proposed QA-IDBA has two contributions: first, the
idle period problem in the traditional DBA mechanism can
be eliminated by interleaved transmission and dynamically
adjusting the bandwidth between groups; second, the QP-LBA
and EBR can be proficient in supporting the differentiated
services architecture based on various traffic characteristics.
As a result, the QA-IDBA can improve bandwidth utilization
and enhance the QoS for DiffServ in the EPON system.
Table I summarizes the definition of parameters. The next
section will discuss the QP-LBA and EBR and remaining
bandwidth compensation scheme.
A. QoS-Based Predictive Limit Bandwidth Allocation
Scheme
The prediction in the QP-LBA scheme takes the classes of
traffic characteristics into account to enhance the prediction
accuracy for each ONU in order to resolve the queue variation
between waiting times and reduce the packet delay. For
instance, when the OLT allocates the granted bandwidth to
ONUs, a predict credit is to be added into the requested
bandwidth of each ONU. Moreover, the incoming packet
during the waiting time and transmission time can be
expected to be transmitted within the current time slot.
Therefore, an accurate traffic prediction scheme can avoid
longer packet delay and network performance degradation. In
this paper, we categorize the traffic data into three different
classes: expedited forwarding (EF)—highest-priority traffic;
assured forwarding (AF)—medium-priority traffic; and best
effort (BE)—low-priority traffic [8,20]. With the purpose of
achieving better performance for time-critical applications,
such as constant bit rate (CBR) for EF traffic and non-bursty
traffic mode, the bandwidth should be assigned to the ONUs
according to the rate of these applications.

III. PERFORMANCE EVALUATION
In this section, the system performance of the proposed
QA-IDBA mechanism incorporated with the interleaved
transmission operating scheme, QP-LBA, and the EBR scheme
is evaluated and compared in terms of end-to-end delay,
throughput, jitter performance, ratio of packet loss, and
fairness with 1) IDBA_Fixed, a mechanism combining the
interleaved transmission operating scheme and LBA with
a strict high-priority scheduling scheme; 2) IDBA_EBR, a
mechanism combining the interleaved transmission operating
scheme, LBA, and the EBR scheme; 3) PFEBR [9], an early
DBA mechanism with a linear prediction scheme by using
unstable ordering scheduling; and 4) the hybrid double-phase
polling algorithm (DPA) [7], a polling algorithm allowing the
OLT to poll in parallel two different ONU subgroups. The
system model is set in the OPNET simulator with one OLT and
either 16 or 32 ONUs. The downstream and upstream channels
are both 1 Gbps. The distances from the ONUs to the OLT
are assumed to be between 10 to 20 km, and each ONU has a
10 MB buffer. Previous research suggested that the maximum

transmission cycle time is 1 ms [2123] to meet ITU-T
Recommendation G.114 [24]. Moreover, the service policy
follows the first-in first-out (FIFO) principle. Then, for traffic
modeling, an extensive study has shown that most network
traffic can be characterized by self-similarity and long-range
dependence (LRD) [25]. This model can also be utilized to
generate highly bursty BE and AF traffic classes with a Hurst
parameter of 0.7 [4], and packet sizes are uniformly distributed
between 64 and 1518 bytes. In the traffic generation, the
high-priority traffic (e.g., voice applications) is generated
as a Poisson distribution with the mean packet size being
fixed at 70 bytes [8]. In order to simulate the effect of
high-priority traffic, the proportion of the traffic profile is
analyzed by simulating the three significant scenarios for a
traffic class triplet (EF, AF, and BE) with (20%, 40%, 40%),
(40%, 30%, 30%), and (60%, 20%, 20%), respectively [10,26].
The simulation scenario is summarized in Table II.
A. End-to-End Packet Delay
Figure 4 compares the mean end-to-end packet delay and
EF traffic classes of PFEBR, IDBA_Fixed, IDBA_EBR, hybrid
DPA, and QA-IDBA with different proportions of the traffic
profile versus the traffic load. In Figs. 4(a) and 4(b), the
simulation results show that both the PFEBR and the hybrid
DPA have the highest mean end-to-end packet delay with the
traffic load exceeding 70% and 60% in scenario 1 for 16 and
32 ONUs, respectively. Furthermore, with an increase in the
variable bit rate (VBR) traffic amount (e.g., 40%, 60%, and
80%), the mean end-to-end delays also increase because both
the aforementioned mechanisms will improve high-priority
traffic end-to-end delay performance but sacrifice low-priority
traffic delay performance. However, the scalable QA-IDBA can
achieve much lower delay at higher traffic loads regardless of
the scenarios due to the EBR’s ability to efficiently reallocate
excessive bandwidth between differential traffic types in the
EPON system. Figures 4(c) and 4(d) show that the PFEBR
mechanism can reduce the overall EF traffic delay by using
the linear prediction scheme unless the traffic load exceeds
90%. The reason is that the unstable list degree in the heavy
queue state is not efficient. However, the QoS-based prediction
scheme in the QA-IDBA mechanism not only effectively
reduces the EF end-to-end packet delay but also absolutely
satisfies the EF traffic in any scenario. Moreover, the QA-IDBA
mechanism meets ITU-T Recommendation G.114 that specifies
the delay for voice traffic in the access network at 1.5 ms [24].
Additionally, the QA-IDBA has better performance than other
mechanisms regardless of both the mean and EF end-to-end

packet delay because the QA-IDBA has a consummation
mechanism for fulfilling the traffic requirements.
B. System Throughput
Figure 5 shows the mean system throughput performance of
PFEBR, IDBA_Fixed, IDBA_EBR, hybrid DPA, and QA-IDBA
for EF, AF, and BE traffic with different proportions of
the traffic profile versus the traffic loads. In Figs. 5(a) and
5(b), simulation results show that the proposed QA-IDBA
mechanism outperforms the PFEBR and the hybrid DPA
in terms of the mean system throughput because the
interleaved transmissions can eliminate the idle time problem
in traditional DBA and support efficient EBR as well as
the remaining bandwidth compensation scheme. All the
mechanisms in this simulation have equal mean system
throughput until the traffic load exceeds 60%. The mean
system throughputs of all mechanisms are similar unless the
traffic load exceeds 60%, whereas the PFEBR and the hybrid
DPA have gradually achieved a saturation performance with
the traffic load exceeding 60%. In this case, the IDBA_EBR has
the best mean throughput performance and begins to become
saturated when traffic load exceeds 80% for 16 and 32 ONUs
due to the effective excess bandwidth reallocation and the
remaining bandwidth compensation scheme. The IDBA_Fixed
and QA-IDBA have the identical trend in the mean throughput
performance, while IDBA_Fixed and QA-IDBA have a better
mean throughput performance in scenario 1 and lower mean
throughput performance in scenario 3 than the others. For the
EF throughput, as shown in Figs. 5(c) and 5(d), the proposed
QA-IDBA mechanism outperforms the other mechanisms
because the EF traffic obtains additional bandwidth by
using a QoS-based prediction scheme that can enhance the
high-priority traffic adaptively for different traffic proportions.

Furthermore, for the AF and BE throughputs, as shown in
Figs. 5(e) to 5(h), the QA-IDBA has the best throughput
performance for 16 ONUs, and the IDBA_EBR has the best
BE throughput performance for 32 ONUs. The reason is that
the guaranteed bandwidth can enhance requirements of the
subscriber without over-estimating the demand of bandwidth
allocation for subscribers. The AF throughput performance
of hybrid DPA begins to decrease with the traffic load
exceeding 70% in scenarios 2 and 3 for 16 and 32 ONUs,
whereas the BE throughput performance of the hybrid DPA
begins to decrease with the traffic load exceeding 60% and
70% for 16 and 32 ONUs in every scenario. One possible
reason is that the QoS-based prediction mechanism of the
hybrid DPA guarantees the requirement of high-priority traffic
and disregards the requirement of low-priority traffic, which
results in lower AF and BE throughput when the proportion of
EF traffic is high.

C. EF Jitter and Packet Loss Ratio
Figures 6(a) and 6(b) compare the jitter performance of
PFEBR, IDBA_Fixed, IDBA_EBR, hybrid DPA, and QA-IDBA
for EF class with different proportions of the traffic profile
versus the traffic loads, respectively. The delay variance σ

received EF packets. Simulation results show that the delay
variance for EF traffic increases as the traffic load increases.
In the proposed interleaved transmission operating scheme, we
can see that the EF jitter of PFEBR can be improved by using
an interleaved transmission operating scheme regardless of
the number of ONUs, especially for IDBA_Fixed. The reason
is that the transmission order of each ONU is sequential
with a guarantee of EF jitter, but the PFEBR changes the
transmission order of ONUs, which leads to higher EF delay
jitter particularly in 16 ONUs. However, the QA-IDBA has a
higher EF jitter with the traffic load exceeding 60%, especially
in scenario 1. This is due to the prediction mechanism
allocating additional prediction bandwidth according to the
requirements of subscribers and therefore yields a larger ratio
of VBR traffic in scenario 1. On the other hand, the QA-IDBA
still outperforms in terms of the packet loss ratio in spite
of various traffic proportions. Figures 6(c) and 6(d) compare
the packet loss ratio with different proportions of the traffic
profile versus the traffic loads, respectively. Simulation results
show that the hybrid DPA begins to have packet loss with the
traffic load exceeding 80% in scenario 1 for 16 ONUs and the
traffic load exceeding 70% in every scenario for 32 ONUs due
to over-allocation of the requested bandwidth to ONUs [27]
for the EBR mechanism in hybrid DPA. This is termed the
redundant bandwidth problem [9] to decrease overall system
throughput. The IDBA_Fixed begins to have packet loss with
the traffic load exceeding 80% in every scenario for 32 ONUs
because of lack of an effective excess bandwidth reallocation
scheme. Furthermore, the IDBA incorporated with EBR and
the remaining bandwidth compensation scheme can improve
bandwidth utilization that prevents packet loss accumulation
in a high-traffic load for each scenario.
D. Fairness
Figure 7 shows the comparison of fairness against different
traffic loads among PFEBR, IDBA_Fixed, IDBA_EBR, hybrid
DPA, and QA-IDBA, respectively. Recently, fairness and QoS
on DBA schemes have become important issues. The fairness
index f (0 5 f 5 1) has been addressed [28], which is defined as

with the traffic load exceeding 70%. Moreover, the QA-IDBA
has the best fairness performance, where the average Jain’s
fairness index f is about 0.93 and 0.9 for 16 and 32 ONUs,
respectively. The reason is that the proposed QA-IDBA can
not only utilize the idle period and remaining bandwidth by
performing DBA computation for fair bandwidth allocation,
but it can also achieve the fairness EBR mechanism with no
partiality based on the guaranteed bandwidth rather than
the requested bandwidth and increases bandwidth utilization.
The fairness of the hybrid DPA begins to gradually vary from
the traffic load 40% to the traffic load 70% for 32 ONUs.
There are two reasons for this situation: 1) the hybrid DPA
changes the transmission mechanism between online polling
and double-phase polling, and 2) EBR based on the requested
bandwidth in the hybrid DPA will cause the redundant
bandwidth problem.

IV. CONCLUSION
In this paper, important factors that can improve the
performance of EPON have been discussed and evaluated. Our
proposed mechanism executes an interleaved transmission
process to automatically adjust the cycle time to resolve the
idle period problem of the traditional DBA scheme, thus
enhancing system performance in terms of the end-to-end
packet delay and system throughput in both 16 and 32 ONU
environments. Moreover, our proposed QP-LBA, EBR, and the
remaining bandwidth compensation scheme incorporated with
the QA-IDBA not only takes into account the prediction for
differential traffic characteristics but also allocates bandwidth
for differential traffic adaptively and improves the utilization
of bandwidth. The simulation results show that the throughput
and EF jitter can be improved by an interleaved transmis-
sion operating scheme. Moreover, the end-to-end delay of
low-priority traffic, the packet loss rate, and fairness can be
improved by excess bandwidth reallocation and the remaining
bandwidth compensation scheme. Furthermore, the QoS-based
prediction limit bandwidth allocation scheme can support
DiffServ to guarantee the service level and improve overall
system performance. Finally, the QA-IDBA mechanism can
achieve better fairness performance. For example, at the traffic
load of each traffic amount (scenario 1, 2, and 3), the average
fairness index of DPA is about 0.81, whereas the QA-IDBA
induces 0.92, which is an improvement of 14% in the fairness
performance.

Historically, the optical access network (OAN) plays a crucial role of supporting emerging new services such as 4 k, 8 k multimedia streaming, telesurgery, augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) applications in the context of Tactile Internet (TI). In order to prevent losing connectivity to the current mobile network and Tactile Internet, the OAN must expand capacity and improve the quality of Services (QoS) mainly for the low latency of 1 ms. The optical network has adopted artificial intelligence (AI) technology, such as deep learning (DL), in order to classify and predict complex data. This trend mainly focuses on bandwidth prediction. The software-defined network (SDN) and cloud technologies provide all the essential capabilities for deploying deep learning to enhance the performance of next-generation ethernet passive optical networks (NG-EPONs). Therefore, in this paper, we propose a deep learning long-short-term-memory model-based predictive dynamic wavelength bandwidth allocation (DWBA) mechanism, termed LSTM-DWBA in NG-EPON. Future bandwidth for the end-user is predicted based on NG-EPON MPCP control messages exchanged between the OLT and ONUs and cycle times. This proposed LSTM-DWBA addresses the uplink control message overhead and QoS bottleneck of such networks. Finally, the extensive simulation results show the packet delay, jitter, packet drop, and utilization.

In the last decade, the bit rates achieved on fiber broadband networks have increased multiple times and every new generation of passive optical network (PON) technologies must unlock more of fiber’s potential and must be backward compatible to ensure easy and iterative upgrade of operator’s networks. In this paper we present two novel dynamic wavelength (in the case of multichannel system) and bandwidth allocation models for realization of fully QoS (Quality of Service)-aware single-channel i.e. multichannel Ethernet passive optical network (EPON). The both presented models include a novel approach for inter/intra –ONU (Optical Network Unit) scheduling mechanism as well as advanced support for multimedia and business-related services. Moreover, the single channel system could be upgraded to multichannel system on per-need basis i.e., only nodes with higher traffic demands could be upgraded. The aim of this approach is twofold. On the one side we hope to avoid the implementation of additional, complex algorithms usually related to QoS support in the access segment and on the other side to develop a solution in which new and old EPON technologies are able to coexist. This approach would eliminate the need for complex migrations, complicated and time consuming procedures as well as possible service outages in the access network. We present detailed simulation experiments with the aim of conducting a study of the performances of both presented approaches and validate both of them in the terms of the future application, further service development and implementation in the next generation broadband networks (NGNs).

An Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) is an optical access network that allows a higher data rate with low power consumption. To improve energy savings for an EPON, the sleep and doze modes for the optical network units (ONUs) play a pivotal role. Many prediction schemes have been proposed to control these modes. To increase the prediction accuracy, this study proposes an energy-efficient approach that uses a support vector regression (SVR) model. A dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) scheme called SVR-DBA is designed to allocate bandwidth to ONUs more efficiently and fairly. To determine the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, simulations are performed. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme decreases energy consumption for ONUs by up to 47% and fulfills the quality-of-service (QoS) requirements in terms of delay, jitter, and packet loss.

Emerging research trends in smart healthcare, smart manufacturing, and Industrial Internet-of-Things (IIoT) applications are based on 5G services, which can achieve ultra-reliable and low-latency communication networks. In such fields of application, haptic applications have gained importance. The invention of 5G wireless communication networks and advances in Tactile Internet (TI) technology, which provides controlled communications through the transmission of touch and actuation in real-time, have been envisioned as promising enablers of TI services. This study introduces TI-based smart hospital healthcare applications to enhance the alignment of services provided to patients. The existing telesurgery system has high communication delay and overhead, which limit its applicability. To alleviate these problems, we analyze and provide insights into the communication architecture for 5G-enabled low-latency telesurgery in a smart hospital. We then propose a new TI-software-defined optical access networking (TI-SDOANs) framework in Next-Generation Passive Optical Network 2, which includes cloud-based human-to-machine steering servers and supports multiple cloud-based applications. We further propose the implementation of an effective TI-dynamic wavelength and bandwidth allocation (TI-DWBA) resource provisioning scheme that meets the quality of service requirements of TI services. Simulation results show that the proposed scheduling schemes can significantly improve the Quality of Service (QoS) performance in terms of the packet delay, jitter, throughput and packet drop.

Quantum access networks allow large number of users to access quantum networks, which can be regarded as an important part of the practical application for quantum communication. However, current quantum access networks have not considered the peer-to-peer multimedia service between optical network units (ONUs) that has become the dominant service in the access networks. Thus we propose a quantum access network that can support direct quantum and classical ONU-ONU communication by using a N:N splitter. In addition, we improve the efficiency of quantum key distribution (QKD) from both the physical and the data link layer. For the former, we analyze spontaneous Raman scattering (SRS) that is the main impairment source to QKD due to the co-propagation of classical and quantum signal. Then we propose a collision-avoiding scheme to reduce the influence of SRS. For the latter, a dynamic time slot assignment protocol is proposed to reduce discarding secure keys greatly. The two methods are both verified by simulations and the results show that each method can effectively optimize QKD performance.

The limited scheme with excess distribution (LS-ED), being a superior grant-sizing protocol in terms of average delay minimization while providing fairness and quality of service (QoS) satisfaction in Ethernet passive optical networks (EPONs), has already been deployed in diverse technologies. An analysis of the protocol is of paramount importance for obtaining deeper insight into several network design and deployment aspects. Thus, the primary objective of this paper is to perform a rigorous mathematical analysis of LS-ED, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, with the help of a discrete time Markov chain (DTMC). Owing to the dependency of the grant size of a particular optical network unit (ONU) on the queue length of other ONUs, the exact queuing analysis of this scheme necessitates solving a Markov model of the same dimension as the number of ONUs, which makes the analysis complicated and mathematically intractable. A lower-dimensional valid approximation model may allow us to perform such an analysis. In this paper, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, we present an analysis of the scheme, wherein the system dynamics are captured from the perspective of the scheduler leading to an approximate model. The model aids in obtaining a closed-form expression for the average cycle time and throughput along with closed-form expressions for average buffer occupancy and average delay at low load. Finally, we provide useful design insights for EPONs employing LS-ED.

The IEEE 802.3ca Task Force group has recently approved the standardization of the next-generation Ethernet passive optical network (NG-EPON) to satisfy future bandwidth demands. NG-EPON architecture classifies the optical network unit (ONU) transmission to allow simultaneous Wavelength-Agile (WA-PON) transmission, which increases the network capacity (50 Gb/s) and flexibility. The recently launched 5G services and related functional standards, new capabilities, and quality of service (QoS) imposed on the optical transport network. The Peer-to-peer (P2P) based live streaming application is the most popular multimedia application in access networks, i.e., Facebook Live, YouTube Live, Twitch, and other streaming and video conferencing services are increasing, especially in global epidemics which requires a higher QoS. Hence, media-based applications require adequate infrastructure resources to meet customer demands such as high bandwidth, low latency, high quality audiovisual, live streaming, and services. Therefore, this paper proposes an SDN enhanced P2P virtual reality (VR) live video streaming application NG-EPON multicast architecture based on 5G-enabled Tactile Internet (TI) and aims to improve the QoS, QoE and provide flexible services to the end-users. Finally, we proposed an SDN-based TI-dynamic wavelength and bandwidth allocation (SD-TI-DWBA) mechanism. Simulation results show that our proposed architecture can improve the system performance and QoS metrics regarding packet delay, jitter, system throughput, and packet loss.

ONU schedule algorithm and ONU transfer mechanism for multi-subsystem-based VPONs’ management is proposed in this paper. To avoid frequent wavelength switch and realize high system stability, ONU schedule algorithm is presented for wavelength allocation by introducing box-filling model. At the same time, judgement mechanism is designed to filter wavelength-increased request caused by slight bandwidth fluctuation of VPON. To share remained bandwidth among VPONs, ONU transfer mechanism is put forward according to flexible wavelength routing. To manage wavelength resource of entire network and wavelength requirement from VPONs, information-managed matrix model is constructed. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed scheme is demonstrated by simulation and analysis.

In order to closely simulate the real network scenario thereby verify the effectiveness of protocol designs, it is necessary to model the traffic flows carried over realistic networks. Extensive studies [1] showed that the actual traffic in access and local area networks (e.g., those generated by ftp and video streams) exhibits the property of self-similarity and long-range dependency (LRD) [2]. Ethernet passive optical networks (EPONs) are being designed to deliver multiple services and applications, such as voice communications, standard and high-definition video (STV and HDTV), video conferencing (interactive video), real-time and near-real-time transactions, and data traffic. To support these applications with their diverse requirements, EPONs need to have class-of-service (CoS) mechanisms built in. Here we investigate how the Multipoint Control Protocol (MPCP)—an EPON transmission arbitration mechanism—can be combined with a strict (exhaustive) priority scheduling that is a default scheduling algorithm specified in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.1D standard. Specifically, packet delays for different classes of traffic are analyzed. We find that the queuing delay for lower-priority classes increases when the network load decreases (a phenomenon we call light-load penalty). We also suggest and analyze two different optimization schemes that eliminate the light-load penalty.

This chapter describes Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPONs), an emerging local subscriber access architecture that combines low cost point-to-multipoint fiber infrastructure with inexpensive and proven Ethernet technology. EPONs use a single trunk fiber that extends from a central office to a passive optical splitter, which then fans out to multiple optical drop fibers connected to subscriber nodes. Other than the end terminating equipment, no component in the network requires electrical power, hence the term passive. Local carriers have long been interested in passive optical networks for the benefits they offer: minimal fiber infrastructure and no powering requirement in the outside plant. With Ethernet now emerging as the protocol of choice for carrying IP traffic in the metro and access network, EPON has emerged as a potential optimized architecture for fiber to the building and fiber to the home. This chapter provides an overview of EPON enabling technologies, investigates EPON design challenges and evaluates its performance.

Dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) is one of the key issues for the current (1G) and next-generation (10G) Ethernet-based passive optical network (EPON) systems. We present a novel bandwidth scheduling scheme that integrates specific scheduling implementations in the optical line terminal and optical network units. This scheduling enables multiservice access with scalable quality of service support for the triple-play (video, voice, and data) services and open access. Our simulation results show that the proposed scheduling algorithm performs very well in supporting service differentiation and fair allocation of bandwidth to different service providers. A performance comparison between 1G and 10G systems is also presented. To the best of our knowledge, no detailed study of DBA in a 10G EPON can be found in the literature so far.

In EPONs using the gated Interleaved Polling with Adaptive Cycle Time (IPACT) scheme, the position of the report message within the granted transmission window has a direct effect on the average packet delay within the network. In this paper, this delay is minimized by using a fitting report position (FRP) scheme to adaptively adjust the position of the report message within the transmission window in accordance with the current network load. In the proposed approach, the optimal position of the report message is determined analytically for various system loads. The optical line terminal (OLT) then uses a heuristic algorithm to estimate the load of the optical network units (ONUs) in accordance with their report messages and determines the report message position that minimizes the average packet delay within the network. Finally, the OLT informs the ONUs of the optimal report position through an optional field in the gate message. The performance of the proposed FRP scheme is evaluated for three different network models, namely Poisson traffic with a uniform ONU load, Poisson traffic with a nonuniform ONU load, and self-similar traffic, respectively. The simulation results show that the FRP scheme achieves a lower average packet delay than fixed-report-position schemes such as fixed-report-front (FRF) or fixed-report-end (FRE) for both Poisson and self-similar traffic. The performance improvement is particularly apparent in networks with a nonuniform ONU load distribution.

The Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) is an emerging technology for the next-generation broadband access networks and is considered an up-to-date candidate network for future fiber to the home. A crucial issue in EPONs is the sharing of uplink bandwidth among optical network units (ONUs). To manage resources efficiently, research on polling schemes based on multipoint control protocol has been conducted. We propose a novel polling algorithm to increase resource utilization by partitioning ONUs into two subgroups with some overlap. In the proposed scheme, after receiving frames from ONUs in one subgroup, the OLT performs dynamic bandwidth allocation for ONUs in the other. Hence, the OLT continuously receives frames from ONUs without significant interruptions. Comprehensive computer simulation results show that the proposed algorithm both defers saturation points of queues in ONUs and provides outstanding network throughput compared with previous work. It has up to 45% lower average packet delay and maximum performance improvement of 17% with respect to network throughput.
