Introduction
I am a technology enthusiast who believes that technology must enhance our intelligence and not replace us. Currently, I am interested in the development of new solutions targeted towards improving the way we live (Smart City solutions). Therefore, I am looking forward to connecting with people with the same interests and who are ready to develop a new age of human-centered solutions.

Being Scrum the agile software development framework most commonly used in the software industry, its applicability is attracting great attention to the academia. That is why this topic is quite often included in computer science and related university programs. In this article, we present a course design of a Software Engineering course where an e...

The use of information technologies in the health domain started decades ago, nevertheless there are still many issues that need to be addressed. Health Recommender Systems (HRSs) constitute a promising alternative when it comes to providing tools to assist doctors in the diagnosis of diseases, as well as to help patients with recommendations in re...

Roads and streets are more and more crowded. For delivery companies that use road transportation, this is a concerning issue as longer times spent on roads mean higher operational costs and less customer satisfaction. Nevertheless, the data captured during operation hours of their vehicles can be leveraged to address such issues. This, however, is...

This manuscript proposes a framework to design an artifact that combines traffic data of different sources, addresses their low-penetration rate and imprecision, and enables their analysis. The implemented artifact uses probe data of en-route operations of delivery vehicles and Traffic Message Channel-based records. Both datasets are fuzzified and...
Conference Paper
This case study manuscript details the conception and implementation of an artifact that uses floating car data to forecast average speeds on a segment of a Swiss national road. To consider the spatial and temporal dependencies when performing the predictions, the studied segment was modeled as a graph and as a time series problem. Subsequently, to...

Last-mile delivery in cities, where the main problems are the traffic situation and ensuring access to customers’ homes while maintaining their privacy, poses a substantial logistical challenge. This book explores how the service area of mobility, especially last-mile delivery, can be improved and smartified. It demonstrates how a design science me...
Chapter
When planning the distribution of parcels, postal services often face different problems. One of them is delivering a parcel to a customer’s home while ensuring the customer is there to receive it. Undeniably, a successful first-try delivery minimizes monetary costs and is less resource-consuming. Having a way of classifying customers according to...
Chapter
Cities are not growing only in population but also in complexity. More than half of the world’s population lives in urban centers; thus, cities have become the central living space for people. Solutions then have to be developed toward benefiting the well-being of the citizens and addressing the challenges of living in complex urban environments (e...
Chapter
Most logistic companies have a well-defined supply chain. In the specific case of delivery companies, the last mile, which is the transportation of parcels from a hub to the final destination, is the component of the supply chains that has the most potential to be improved. However, the last-mile delivery is challenging to optimize given the circum...

The FAR conceptual framework described in the previous chapter is the first outcome of the design research and the transdisciplinary approach followed in the development of this book. In the same sense, such a framework has to be validated and evaluated. This chapter introduces the FAR artifact, which constitutes the means to implement the concepts...

Implementing systems that can exhibit human-like and more biological capabilities (e.g., learning and summarizing information) is a current discussion topic. Having such systems could enable diverse tasks to be performed more efficiently and reliably. Some authors refer to computational intelligence as a branch of Artificial Intelligence that imple...
Chapter
The final chapter of this book is devoted to summarizing the work completed and providing concluding remarks. Section 8.1 highlights the main points of the development of the different stages of this research endeavor. Then, Sect. 8.2 presents an alignment of the outcomes of the projects completed in the frame of this research work with the researc...
Chapter
Traffic congestion results from an interplay of various factors impacting travel duration. Research efforts in advance travel information systems have been directed toward determining where and when a traffic anomaly occurs and how much travel time increases. Unmasking these mysteries could yield economic benefits in the form of less time spent on...

This manuscript proposes a five-step methodology that enables the mapping of perceived spatial qualities. To achieve such a goal, crowdsourcing and neural network methods were used. Crowdsourcing enables gathering data from people, and neural networks facilitate extending that knowledge to perform automatic classifications. The proposed method is t...
Conference Paper
This research effort explores the incorporation of personality treats into user-user collaborative filtering algorithms. To explore the performance of such a method, MovieOcean, a movie recommender system that uses a questionnaire based on the Big Five model to generate personality profiles, was implemented. These personality profiles are used to p...
Conference Paper
The enforcement of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in the European Union represents a challenge in designing reliable recommender systems due to user data collection limitations. This work proposes a method to consider GDPR data with a graph-based recommender system to tackle data sparsity and the cold-start problem by representing th...
Conference Paper
This case study article presents details about the implementation of an artifact that uses traffic data databases to mine linguistic summaries. The linguistic summaries are obtained and validated to ease the understanding of the data and to help users to convey information quickly and effectively. Through a web application that makes use of maps an...

The rapid technological transition requires the adoptive approach to the digital conduct of public and private institutions. Countries and companies strive to integrate a balanced understanding of digital ethics and sustainability concepts from various standpoints, which results in a dispersed and uncategorized knowledge base. This work presents a...

Dynamically developing digitization initiatives among public institutions and private companies necessitate a balanced approach to digital ethics. Several frameworks and legal regulations have been adopted to clarify and define the various ethical challenges in digital contexts. These initiatives often accentuate one of three components: data secur...

Streetwise is the first map of spatial quality of urban design of Switzerland. Streetwise measures the human perception of spatial situations and uses crowdsourcing methods for this purpose: a large number of people are shown pairs of street-level images of public space online; by clicking on an image, they each give an evaluation about the place...
Article
Last-mile is the component of the supply chains that has the most potential to be optimized and give an advantage to retailers and delivery companies. At the same time, it is the hardest to deal with. Factors such as traffic, weather, unexpected events, or the simple fact that a customer is not at home affect directly the efficiency of the overall...

People living in urban areas suffer from increasing noise pollution. Local and national governments invest efforts in the development of sensor-based noise monitoring systems and long-term plans to reduce noise pollution. However, deploying such sensor-based systems on a city scale is very expensive. In this work, Jingle Jungle Maps, a tool for the...
