The genus Stereum in Israel

Abstract and Figures

A study of Israeli Stereum species diversity resulted in four species: Stereum gausapatum, S. hirsutum, S. sanguinolentum, and S. subpileatum. A new form, S. hirsutum f. lobulatum, is described from the species complex, and S. gausapatum and S. sanguinolentum are recorded as new species for Israeli mycobiota. Taxa are described and microstructural features are illustrated based on specimens collected from northern Israeli forests. Notes on host preference, morphological variability, distribution, and taxonomic relationships are provided. A key to Israeli Stereum species is given.

The fungi associated with marine algae are prolific sources of metabolites with high chemical diversity and bioactivity. In this study, we investigated culture-dependent fungal communities associated with the Baltic seaweed Fucus vesiculosus. Altogether, 55 epiphytic and endophytic fungi were isolated and identified. Twenty-six strains were selected for a small-scale One-Strain-Many-Compounds (OSMAC)-based fermentation in four media under solid and liquid culture regimes. In total, 208 fungal EtOAc extracts were tested for anticancer activity and general cytotoxicity. Ten most active strains (i.e., 80 extracts) were analyzed for their metabolome by molecular networking (MN), in-silico MS/MS fragmentation analysis (ISDB–UNPD), and manual dereplication. Thirty-six metabolites belonging to 25 chemical families were putatively annotated. The MN clearly distinguished the impact of culture conditions in chemical inventory and anticancer activity of the fungal extracts that was often associated with general toxicity. The bioactivity data were further mapped into MN to seek metabolites, exclusively expressed in the active extracts. This is the first report of cultivable fungi associated with the Baltic F. vesiculosus that combined an OSMAC and an integrated MN-based untargeted metabolomics approaches for efficient assessment and visualization of the impact of the culture conditions on chemical space and anticancer potential of the fungi.

This study was based on specimens collected on 15 field expeditions between 2007 and 2013 in the Parque Estadual da Serra de Caldas Novas (PESCAN), the first conservation unit decreed by the government of the State of Goiás and one of the most representative protected areas of the Brazilian Savanna (Cerrado biome). A list of 51 species composes this inventory, six of them reported for the first time from Cerrado Biome (Flabellophora parva, Hymenochaete microcycla, Navisporus sulcatus, Stiptophyllum erubescens, Trechispora mellina, and Truncospora ohiensis), five from the Midwest region of Brazil and two from Goiás. These results increase sampling efforts and knowledge about these fungi in this little-studied region of Brazil.

Xylobolus subpileatus is a widely distributed crust fungus reported from all continents except Antarctica, although considered a rare species in several European countries. Profound mycochemical analysis of the methanol extract of X. subpileatus resulted in the isolation of seven compounds (1–7). Among them, (3β,22E)-3-methoxy-ergosta-4,6,814,22-tetraene (1) is a new natural product, while the NMR assignment of its already known epimer (2) has been revised. In addition to a benzohydrofuran derivative fomannoxin (3), four ergostane-type triterpenes 4–7 were identified. The structure elucidation of the isolated metabolites was performed by one- and two-dimensional NMR and MS analysis. Compounds 2–7 as well as the chloroform, n-hexane, and methanol extracts of X. subpileatus were evaluated for their tyrosinase, acetylcholinesterase, and butyrylcholinesterase inhibitory properties. Among the examined compounds, only fomannoxin (3) displayed the antityrosinase property with 51% of inhibition, and the fungal steroids proved to be inactive. Regarding the potential acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activity of the fungal extracts and metabolites, it was demonstrated that the chloroform extract and compounds 3–4 exerted noteworthy inhibitory activity, with 83.86 and 32.99%, respectively. The butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) inhibitory assay revealed that methanol and chloroform extracts, as well as compounds 3 and 4, exerted notable activity, while the rest of the compounds proved to be only weak enzyme inhibitors. Our study represents the first report on the chemical profile of basidiome of the wild-growing X. subpileatus, offering a thorough study on the isolation and structure determination of the most characteristic biologically active constituents of this species.

Corticioid and poroid fungi are traditional morphological groups composed of ligninolytic species. Due to their efficiency in wood decomposition process, many species have great ecological importance, especially in nutrient cycling, as well as for their biotechnological properties. Nevertheless, knowledge about these fungi is scarce in many phytogeographic regions of Brazil, as is the case of the Cerrado, since mycodiversity studies in this biome are mainly focused on areas of the São Paulo state. Here we present the taxonomic inventory of corticioid and poroid fungi from the Reserva Ecológica da Universidade Estadual de Goiás (REC-UEG), a Cerrado remnant in Anápolis, Goiás, Brazil. The area is covered by three typical Cerrado landscapes (cerrado stricto sensu, mesophilic forest, and gallery forest), widely explored for scientific and educational purposes by the academic and regional community which seeks to learn about and preserve its biodiversity. Exsiccates deposited in the fungarium of the Universidade Estadual de Goiás (HUEG-Fungi) were analyzed. They are the result of collections made over 20 years, in approximately 103 ha of the reserve. Samples were characterized macro and microscopically and identified based on specialized literature. 51 species were recognized, which are distributed in 33 genera, 15 families, and five orders. Species were most frequent in forested areas and among them, six are new occurrence records for the Cerrado, nine for the Midwest region, and nine for the Goiás state. These results contribute to increase the knowledge of these fungi in the Cerrado, as well as geographic distribution, and show the relevance of preserving the reserve for the regional Funga representativity.

In summer 2021 (June–July), disease symptoms on trunks and shoots were observed in olive groves in the Tarom Sofla region, Qazvin province, Iran. The symptoms were light-pink discoloration and surface depression in the external layers of the wood. As the disease progressed, brown streaks of tissue appeared on the longitudinal sections of the wood. The identification of fungus was made based on PCR amplification of the rDNA-ITS region with the universal fungal primers ITS5 and ITS4. BLAST searches revealed 99.52% identity to Stereum hirsutum. Several species of basidiomycetes are known to live on wood as saprobionts or parasites. On olive trees, they cause white rot symptoms. Although they are not directly responsible for tree mortality; however, they can lead to structural deterioration of woody tissues. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of S. hirsutum associated with wood rotting of olive trees in the world.

A checklist is presented concerning the species composition of Hymenomycetes (Aphyllophorales s.l.) and Heterobasidiomycetes in Israel based on data of previous studies and field sample collections. In total, 242 species are presented, of which five are new records for the Israeli mycobiota, namely Australohydnum dregeanum, Ceriporiopsis consobrina, C. resinascens, Fibroporia vaillantii, and Postia inocybe. The distribution and habitat of each species in Israel are also summarized. This checklist will serve as valuable data for future species diversity studies of these fungi in Israel.

En el presente trabajo se evaluó la biodegradación de las maderas de Eucalyptus globulus Labill y Pinus radiata D. Don con los hongos: Stereum hirutum, Trametes elegans, Perenniporia medulla-panis y Pycnoporus sanguineus, para biopulpaje. La biodegradación por los cuatro hongos de la pudrición blanca fue durante 60 días a 25°C. Finalizado el proceso se determinó las pérdidas de masa, celulosa y componentes diferentes de la celulosa. En cuanto a la biodegradación de E. globulus: P. medulla-panis produjo los valores más altos de pérdidas de masa y componentes diferentes de la celulosa con 6,63% y 10,44%; y las pérdidas de celulosa fueron similares para los cuatro hongos. P. medulla-panis, S. hirsutum y P. sanguineus ocasionaron las mayores pérdidas de masa de P. radiata con 7,28%; 7,19% y 8,17% respectivamente; en la pérdida de celulosa T. elegans y P. sanguineus mostraron los menores valores de 6,08% y 6,87%; P. sanguineus ocasionó la mayor pérdida de componentes diferentes de la celulosa con 9,12%. P. radiata en relación a E. globulus, tuvo mayores pérdidas de masa y celulosa con 6,51% y 7,97% respectivamente; E. globulus fue mayor que P. radiata en pérdida de componentes diferentes de la celulosa con 8,35%. P. medulla-panis fue el que tuvo mayor potencial para biopulpaje para la madera de E. globulus y P. sanguineus para P. radiata.

Only two Xylobolus species are known from Hungary, i.e. X. frustulatus and X. subpileatus. Both are rare all over Europe. Xylobolus frustulatus were reported in Hungary from a few localities until now. It was found in the Visegrád and the Vértes Mts for the first time. In case of X. subpileatus, only a single record was published ca 70 years ago from rotten wood (without voucher specimen). Its first natural occurrence was discovered in the Vértes Mts (Juhdöglő-völgy Forest Reserve) in 2010. Distribution and ecological requirements of both species are discussed. Suggestions on their conservational and red listed status in Hungary are given.

1. This Part deals with the generic names based on imperfect states of Hymenomycetes, exclusive of the Sporobolomycetaceae. 2. Asterophora Ditm. per Fr. (and its typonyms) as well as Ditangium P. Karst. and Syzygospora G. W. Mart. are evaluated as nomina anamorphosium and thus as of restricted priorability. The correct names for the basidiferous and 'complete' fungi corresponding to Asterophora and Ditangium are Nyctalis Fr. and Craterocolla Bref. respectively. 3. Special attention has been paid to those names that are based on imperfect forms of Botryobasidium Donk and related genera and of Nyctalis. 4. Isaria sphaecophila Ditm. is selected as type species of Ceratonema Pers. (non Roth).

This seventh part deals with the Thelephoraceae as traditionally conceived, not with the family in its modern strongly emended sense. The correct name for the genus often referred to as Hypolyssus Berk. (or Podostrombium G. Kunze) seems to be Caripia O.K. (as already previously accepted by some authors). The typifications of Gloeotulasnella Höhn. & L., Hypochnus Fr. (non Ehrenb.), Lyomyces P. Karst., and several other names are recommended for consideration. Two proposals for conservation are repeated: Craterellus Pers. against Craterella S. F. Gray and Hymenochaete Lév. against Hymenochaete [P. Beauv. corn] Nees.
