New Employees Accident and Injury Rates in Australia: A review of the literature

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS, 2018) every year in Australia there are more than half a million work related accidents and injuries. The financial, human and social costs of work related accidents and injuries are a major concern for not only individual workplaces but at all levels for International and National authorities. International research since 1917 has consistently demonstrated that, irrespective of age, experience and industry, the occupational group at greatest risk of accidents and injuries are those employees with less than 12 months experience in their current job role. Whilst the elevated risk for new employees has always been concerning, recent organisational developments such as globalisation and increased non-standard employment, as well as workers changing jobs more frequently have strengthened these concerns. A review of the Australian and International literature has shown that approximately 30% to 40% of new employees sustain an injury within the first year of employment. Research in Australia on this topic, however, appears to be lagging and is worthy of further attention and a stronger focus on how to remediate this global issue. Compared to other countries such as Canada, Italy, France, Thailand, Africa and America, Australia has limited research on new employee accident and incident rates available, reflecting a lack of focus on this issue. The Australian data shows that in general, the workforce is evolving and that the incident rates change depending on new employee rates.

Ergonomics is the scientific discipline that investigates the interactions between humans and systems to optimize both human and system performance for worker safety, health, and productivity. Ergonomics is frequently involved either in the design of emerging technologies or in strategies to alleviate unanticipated human performance problems with emerging technologies. This manuscript explores several such emerging issues and opportunities in the context of the mining sector. In mining, the equipment, tools, and procedures have changed considerably and continue to change. Body-worn technology provides a number of opportunities to advance the safety and health of miners, while teleoperation and autonomous mining equipment stand to benefit significantly from ergonomics applications in other sectors. This manuscript focuses on those issues and opportunities that can impact the safety and health of miners in the near term.

Unsafe acts have been identified as a major factor of construction accidents. The Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) has been used to explain the factors influencing unsafe behaviour, by establishing the relationship between attitude, intention, and behaviour. However, the existing research on the relationship between safety attitude and safety behaviour could not fully explain the decision-making process of unsafe acts, in that the relationship could be mediated by attitudinal ambivalence, which is caused by conflicting information sources and the social network pressure of peer workers. This research examined whether attitudinal ambivalence was a mediating factor, either fully or partially, in the relationship between safety attitude and safety behaviour by expanding the TPB model. Data were collected from questionnaire survey of 228 construction workers. The results showed that attitudinal ambivalence existed as a partial mediating factor in the relationship between safety attitude and safety behaviour. This paper contributed to the body of knowledge on safety management by recognizing the role of attitudinal ambivalence in construction workers and integrated it into the TPB model. This research will be helpful in providing greater understanding of the dynamic and complex decision-making process of unsafe behaviour given multiple information sources and conflicting environments.

Human factors engineering (also known as ergonomics) is a body of knowledge and a collection of analytical and empirical methods used to guide the development of systems to ensure suitability for human use. Human factors engineering is a component of user-centered design, and encompasses the disciplines of human-computer interaction and usability engineering. The focus of human factors engineering is on understanding the capabilities and limitations of human abilities, and applying that understanding to the design of human-machine systems. This entry introduces the general topics of human factors engineering and usability testing.
