Redescription of the Neotropical genus Aristathlus (Heteroptera, Reduviidae, Harpactorinae)

Abstract and Figures

Th e Neotropical genus Aristathlus Bergroth 1913, is redescribed. Digital dorsal habitus photographs for A. imperatorius Bergroth and A. regalis Bergroth, the two included species, are provided. Selected morphological structures are documented with scanning electron micrographs. Male genitalia are documented for the fi rst time with digital photomicrographs and line drawings. New distributional records in South America are given for species of Aristathlus.

Quasigraptocleptes maracristinae gen. nov., sp. nov. (Hemiptera, Heteroptera, Reduviidae, Harpactorinae, Harpactorini) is described based on male and female specimens from Brazil. Photographs and comments about the syntypes of Myocoris nigriceps Burmeister, 1835, Myocoris nugax Stål, 1872, Myocoris tipuliformis Burmeister, 1838 and Xystonnytus ichneumoneus (Fabricius, 1803) are presented. The intra-specific variability and sexual dimorphic characteristics among specimens of Q. maracristinae sp. nov. are recorded. General characteristics of Hiranetis Spinola, 1837, Graptocleptes Stål, 1866, Quasigraptocleptes gen. nov. and Parahiranetis Gil-Santana, 2015, which seem to be closer genera, are compared, including those of the male genitalia of some species. A key to the species of Myocoris Burmeister, 1835, and an updated key to Neotropical wasp-mimicking Harpactorini genera are provided.

Various genera and species of Harpactorinae (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Reduviidae: Harpactorinae: Apiomerini and Harpactorini) occurring in French Guiana are treated. Diarthrotarsus guianensis sp. nov. (Harpactorini) is described. An updated key to the species of Diarthrotarsus Bergroth, 1905 is presented. Apiomerus nitidicollis Stål, 1872 and Sphodrolestes vittaticollis Stål, 1867 (both Apiomerini), Graptocleptes formosus Miller, 1951, Heza aurantia Maldonado, 1976, Heza phthinica Swanson, 2021, Isocondylus elongatus (Lepeletier & Serville, 1825), Notocyrtus costai Gil-Santana & Forero, 2009, Notocyrtus depressus Stål, 1872, Notocyrtus tibanae Costa & Gil-Santana, 2001 and Ploeogaster gesana Kirkaldy, 1909 (all Harpactorini) are recorded from French Guiana for the first time. The presence of Calliclopius nigripes (Linnaeus, 1767) (Apiomerini) and Heza sericans Stål, 1859 (Harpactorini) in French Guiana is confirmed. A new species of Notocyrtus, N. costai sp. nov. is described from Surinam. Photographs in dorsal and lateral views are provided for this new species. Notocyrtoides Carvalho, Costa & Gil-Santana, 2001, is considered to be a junior synonym of Coilopus Elkins, 1969, with N. tuberculatus Carvalho, Costa & Gil-Santana, 2001, as a junior synonym of C. vellus Elkins, 1969. New occurrences of other Harpactorini species are recorded for the first time from Brazil: Harpactor rhombeus (Erichson, 1848), Orbella exceptio Bérenger, 2007, and Orbella putshkovi Bérenger, 2007; and from Surinam Notocyrtus dorsalis (Gray, 1832). Remarks on the color variation of these species and Notocyrtus ricciae Gil-Santana & Costa, 2001, and Notocyrtus dispersus Carvalho & Costa, 1992, are given.

Based on examination of its holotype, Helonotus pallidulus Walker, 1873 is transferred to the genus Heza Amyot & Serville, 1843 with the resulting new combination: Heza pallidula (Walker, 1873), comb. nov. (Hemiptera, Heteroptera, Reduviidae, Harpactorinae, Harpactorini). A comparison with the similar Heza ventralis Stål,1872 is provided.

Apresenta-se o primeiro registro de ocorrência de Atrachelus cinereus crassicornis (Burmeister, 1835), Doldina carinulata Stål, 1859 e Zelus mattogrossensis Wygodzinsky, 1947 (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Harpactorinae: Harpactorini) em lavoura de arroz, no estado do Maranhão, Brasil. Essas espécies foram coletadas em condições de campo no município de Chapadinha, microrregião do Baixo Parnaíba por meio de amostragens realizadas utilizando pano de batida e rede de varredura.

This new data improves our knowledge on the distribution of this interesting relevant group of heteropterans.

The Neotropical assassin bug genus Montina Amyot & Serville, 1843 (Reduviidae: Harpactorinae) is revised for Colombia. Montina has not been adequately explored taxonomically, with its last described species published in 1867. It has ten valid species distributed in tropical areas of Central and South America, but none of them have been formally recorded from Colombia. We describe three new species, M. calarca Mejía-Soto & Forero sp. nov., M. gladiator Mejía-Soto & Forero sp. nov., M. tikuna Mejía-Soto & Forero sp. nov., and report seven species as new records for the country: M. confusa (Stål, 1859), M. distincta (Stål, 1859), M. fumosa (Stål, 1867), M. lobata Stål, 1859, M. ruficornis (Fabricius, 1803), M. scutellaris Stål, 1859, and M. testacea (Stål, 1859). Montina calarca sp. nov. is distinguished by the reddish coloration with black head and legs; densely setose pronotum; connexival margin rounded on segments 4, 5, and 6 without protuberances, connexivum black with a narrow red band on margin; and translucent yellow membrane with hyaline cells and darkened veins. Montina gladiator sp. nov. is distinguished by the red coloration, with black legs, scutellum, and abdomen; connexival margin 4–5 lobed, 6 straight, segments 2–4 with acute posterior process on each segment, connexivum dark brown to black with a narrow red band on its margin. Montina tikuna sp. nov. is distinguished by the reddish-brown coloration, with black scutellum and abdomen; connexival margin nearly straight, segments 2–4 with small posterior acute process, 5–6 with obtuse process, connexivum black; ventral laterotergites only with black scattered erect setae. New characters help delimit Montina and differentiate it from Ploeogaster Amyot & Serville, 1843, its most similar genus. For all species we provide a diagnosis, images, documentation of genitalia, and distribution maps. A key to all the species of Montina is provided.

The Neotropical harpactorine assassin bug genus Acanthischium Amyot & Serville, 1843 (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Harpactorini) includes four valid species: Acanthischium maculatum Amyot & Serville, 1843 (with ten color varieties proposed by Stål [1872]), Acanthischium haglundi Stål, 1866, Acanthischium superbum Haviland, 1931, and Acanthischium invium Elkins, 1961. A taxonomic revision and a morphological phylogenetic analysis were carried out to test species limits and to propose a hypothesis of evolutionary relationships. As a result of the phylogenetic analysis, Acanthischium is characterized on its external morphology by the elongate postocular region, posterior margin of the pronotum with spines, ventral surface of protrochanter with apical and basal protuberances, profemur wider than mesofemur, and protibia strongly curved. After the taxonomic revision we propose nine valid species, taking into consideration characters of external morphology, male and female genitalia, and color patterns: Acanthischium dimidiatum Stål, 1859 stat. rev.; Acanthischium flaviceps Stål, 1872 stat. rev.; Acanthischium haglundi Stål, 1866; Acanthischium kuna sp. nov. from Panama and Colombia; Acanthischium maculatum Amyot & Serville, 1843; Acanthischium meloae sp. nov. from Suriname; Acanthischium nigrum Stål, 1872 stat. rev.; Acanthischium semiflavum Stål,1872 stat. rev.; and Acanthischium superbum Haviland, 1931. We further synonymize A. invium Elkins, 1961 with A. superbum. All but one of the species-A. flaviceps-were included in the phylogenetic analysis, in which Acanthischium was found to be monophyletic, with the following set of relationships: (A. haglundi + (A. nigrum + (A. dimidiatum (A. maculatum, A. semiflavum, A. kuna, A. meloae, A. superbum)))). The resulting phylogenetic pattern indicate a body color transition from drab to more vivid ones, such as orange or red. The species exhibiting red and orange colorations are found in a clade, suggesting an underlying biological phenomenon, such as wasp mimetism.

The variation of diversity of Reduviidae (Hemiptera) in three fragments of Tropical Dry Forest (Reserva Campesina La Montaña= RCM, La Esmeralda= L.E and Puerto Colombia= P.Col) from November 2012 to June 2013 in the department of Atlántico was analyzed. A lineal transect of 600 m was installed in each fragment. Ten points were marked and separated every 50 m. The Reduviidae were collected those points using hitting (agitation of bushes), sifting of leaf litter and manual gathering. Four light traps were also installed (two white and two purple) every 150 meters. Two hundred and sixty-five specimens were captured. They represented 19 genera and 9 subfamilies. The most diverse subfamily was the Harpactorinae with 37% of the total 143. The Zelurus Hahn was the most common genera with 143 specimens which was directly related to the rainy season in the area. On the other hand, the L.E and the RCM fragments had the highest population of Reduviidae with 13 genera in each one. The highest population was in May with 155 specimens. The composition of Reduviidae varied during the time and through the space in the DTF fragments in the department of Atlantico which shows that this family depend on micro-habitat availability, food sources and changes in the vegetation in the these ecosystems.

A new genus and a species of Saicinae, Kiskeya palassaina, n. gen., n. sp., are described from the Dominican Republic. The armature of the fore leg of the nine apterous female specimens are unique among genera of Saicinae in consisting of spines on the fore femur, but of stiff setae on the fore tibia. A key to the New World genera is given. Digital macrophotographs, scanning electron micrographs, and illustrations are provided.

A new species, Sycanus aurantiacus, of the assassin bug subfamily Harpactorinae is described on the basis of specimens collected from Bali, Indonesia. This species is distinguished from the other species of Sycanus by its antennal segment I having two orange annulations; the posterior pronotal lobe being weakly tumid in the middle near the posterior margin; the scutellar spine being erect, short, and rounded at the apex; each femur having two incomplete orange annulations; the hemelytral corium being blackish with the veins yellow to yellowish brown; and the abdominal laterotergites being weakly extended dorsad. This species is notable because it feeds on some serious lepidopteran pests of cabbage.
