Introduction
Boyuan Bi currently works at the School of Ecology and Environment, Northwestern Polytechnical University. He does research in phosphorus acquisition and use by plants in forest ecosystems. His current project is 'Trade-offs and dirving factors of absorptive roots phosphorus acquisition strategies of dominant woody plants in warm temperate forests of the Qinling Mountains'.

Enhanced rock weathering (ERW) has been proposed as a measure to enhance the carbon (C)‐sequestration potential and fertility of soils. The effects of this practice on the soil phosphorus (P) pools and the general mechanisms affecting microbial P cycling, as well as plant P uptake are not well understood. Here, the impact of ERW on soil P availabil...

Facilitation is common among plants, but our understanding of indirect belowground facilitative mechanisms is limited. We followed up on previous research showing that Pinus sylvestris had strong facilitative effects on co-occurring Amorpha fruticosa shrubs by testing the effects of root exudates of the Pinus on various components of the N cycle in...

Background: The diversity of resource acquisition strategies of plant roots determines the species coexistence patterns to a certain extent. However, few root physiological traits have been investigated, such as root phosphatase activity (PA) that affects plant phosphorus (P) uptake. Methods: Root PA and classical root functional traits were invest...

Managed plantations are normally characterized by monocultures, which lead to ecological problems such as reduced plant productivity and declining ecological services. Considering the potential degradation of Pinus sylvestris var mongolica (P. sylvestris) plantations in the Mu Us sandy land, there is still a knowledge gap regarding the selection of...

Specific metabolites and secondary metabolites produced by plants and soil microbes play key roles in regulating organismal behaviour. At present, the variations in soil microbial communities mediated by plant rhizosphere metabolism in arid environments are still poorly understood. Therefore, we investigated the rhizosphere soil (RS) and bulk soil...

As a vital component of biodiversity, phyllosphere bacteria in forest canopy play a critical role in maintaining plant health and influencing the global biogeochemical cycle. There is limited research on the community structure of phyllosphere bacteria in natural forests, which creates a gap in our understanding of whether and/or how phyllosphere b...

This study aimed to identify the species with better recovery effects by comprehensively assessing the rhizosphere abiotic and biotic factors of typical plants in the Mu Us Sandy Land, and to clarify the driving factors in the rhizosphere microbial activity among typical species. The rhizosphere microbial index (RMI) of different typical species wa...
Article
The resource acquisition strategy of soil microorganisms can be reflected by soil extracellular enzyme activity (EEA). However, there are few reports on the application of extracellular enzyme stoichiometry (EES) method to study the difference in microbial metabolic nutrient limitation between rhizosphere and bulk soil. Here, we choose the rhizosph...

Soil metabolites strongly affect microbial community structure and function. Yet the response of soil microbial communities to plant rhizosphere metabolism and their interaction mechanism is poorly understood. In this study, we aimed to explore the influence of Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica (P. sylvestris) rhizosphere metabolites on microbial div...
Article
Soil microbial communities maintain multiple ecosystem functions in terrestrial ecosystems. The response of soil microbial communities to vegetation restoration in desertification environments is still poorly understood. Therefore, the purpose of our study was to evaluate the dynamic changes of the soil microbial community during the growth of Pinu...

Phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) can be used as biomarkers for qualitative and quantitative analyses of soil microbial community diversity. In this study, we collected soil samples at 10-cm intervals to a depth of 1 m from Robinia pseudoacacia plantations of four different ages (10, 15, 25 and 40 years) in a loess area and analysed the soil microbi...
