The rapid change during the last decades in the activities of people and the global energy trends in the usage of daily equipment, led to massive shortage not just in the energy sector, but almost in all of the related sectors, especially in the developing countries. Consequently, predicting energy demand is a vital issue in order to fulfill the future strategy of any country. In this study, four machine learning algorithms have been deployed in order to forecast the short-term demand load for the city of Kirkuk based on hourly recorded real data. This data-driven study has taken in count the metrological weather data as a function of electrical energy demand. The stages of developing the models are discussed, and the forecasting models validated using 6 months of out-of-sample data. Among the four (Machine Learning (ML) models, two predictive algorithms (i.e. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Decision Trees (DTs)) showed better predictive capabilities achieving lower error rates.

Hybrid active power filter (HAPF) has already been an effective and widely-used method for power quality improvement. This paper presents historical review and developing progress of the HAPFs' functionalities as harmonic and reactive power compensation. The structures of HAPFs are discussed in different historical periods, and divided into four developing pattern: parallel active part with parallel element, parallel active part with series element, b-shape, and three-phase four-wire structure. It is aimed at making a comprehensive analysis of HAPFs' historical developing tendency in structure and function design. The future possible developing guidelines are discussed as conclusion in the last.

The penetration of nonlinear loads on power systems increases distortion levels and can cause severe problems to power systems. Many factors affect the degree of generated harmonics including the background voltage distortion and percentage of nonlinear load to the total load. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to investigate and accurately quantify the effects of these two factors on the harmonics produced by a group of Personal Computers (PCs). Experimental measurements and computer simulations are performed to confirm the observations.

In 1915, Nature magazine published a short paper, "The Principle of Similitude." The author, Nobel-Prizewinning physicist John Strutt, Lord Rayleigh, introduced his paper by stating, "I have often been impressed by the scanty attention paid even by original workers in physics to the great principle of similitude." He went on to propose many examples of physical behavior that could be easily predicted through an existing understanding of similar physical phenomena. The principle of similarity he referred to has, in recent years, been important in the field of fluid dynamics, where the consideration of scale models must be analogous not only in shape to their real-world counterparts but in their dynamic interactions with surrounding media over time.

We found their comments very important because they allow us to highlight how the lack of the correct definitions may lead to misunderstanding. Series of commissioning tests are needed before UHV transmission system putting into operation. In this paper, with the characteristics of Huainan-Shanghai 1000kV transmission system, electromagnetic transient simulation results and experimental data portion commissioning tests were compared and analyzed. Three typical experiments were studied, including the switching capacitor of low-voltage side test, artificial single-phase transient short-circuit ground test, closing no-load transformer. In conclusion, preliminary research works on electromagnetic transient predicted over-voltage and over-current during the test. The above work ensured the safety commissioning. Through comparison and analysis between the measured data and simulated data, the simulation results were consistent with and actual values.
Thesis
The electrical engineering scientific community since 1892 is seeking a power theory for interpreting the power flow within electric networks under non-sinusoidal conditions. The proliferation of power electronic devices in electrical systems provides added motivation to find such a theory. Some examples of the effort regarding power definitions and measurements under non-sinusoidal conditions include four international workshops, an IEEE working group and a biannual international conference. Although many power theories have been proposed regarding non-sinusoidal operation, an adequate solution is yet to be found. In contrast to previous investigations, it is suggested here that the framework based on complex number representations in non-sinusoidal circuit analysis may in fact hamper energy flow analysis. Thus, a new circuit analysis approach is developed using geometric algebra. In a new domain – coined as the GN domain – multivectors describe circuit and power quantities, circuit quantities obey Kirchhoff’s circuit laws, it is possible to apply the superposition principle and a better sense of the flow of currents and powers in the examined circuits is shown. The power multivector results from the geometric product of the voltage and current multivectors. The power multivector allows a decomposition that accounts for the total active and non-active power, involves the well-known power terms of the sinusoidal case – reactive and active average power – and two new terms: degrading power and reactive power due to harmonic interactions. Also, the power multivector satisfies both: the principle of conservation of energy and the balance principle of reactive power. The proposed GN domain power theory is able to: 1) reveal flaws in other power theories, 2) undermines the concept that the number of reactive elements required to achieve a near unity power factor is dependent on the number of harmonics in the excitation source, and 3) shows that the traditional non-sinusoidal apparent power definition needs to be revised. Presently, no power theory has these features all together.

A nonlinear programming technique using penalty function method is employed for the minimum weight design of a half-bridge DC-DC buck power converter. The cost-effective computer-aided approach provides a minimum-weight design down to the details of the component level and concurrently meets all power-circuit performance requirements. Important design insights and guidelines are obtained to readily assess (1) the tradeoffs between weight and loss as the switching frequency is increased, (2) the optimum operating frequency range over which the total weight/loss is minimized, (3) the impact of device characteristics on the total weight and loss profile.

Due to poor efficiencies of Incandescent Lamps (ILs), Fluorescent Lamps (FLs) and Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) are increasingly used in residential and commercial applications. This proliferation of FLs and CFLs increases the harmonics level in distribution systems that could affect power systems and end users. In order to quantify the harmonics produced by FLs and CFLs precisely, accurate modelling of these loads are required. Matlab Simulink is used to model and simulate the full models of FLs and CFLs to give close results to the experimental measurements. Moreover, a Constant Load Power (CLP) model is also modelled and its results are compared with the full models of FLs and CFLs. This CLP model is much faster to simulate and easier to model than the full model. Such models help engineers and researchers to evaluate the harmonics exist within households and commercial buildings.
