The Snowy Owl is the only bird of prey that lives in the Arctic area, its population has suffered drastic contractions on a global scale and today is estimated at 28,000 individuals. Its destiny is tied to the future of the Arctic. This book is linked with a project to raise awareness of the problem of melting ice. A part of the proceeds is destined to a real project of conservation and study of the Snowy Owl in North America, the Project SNOWstorm.

Climate change affects breeding of Reed Warblers Acrocephalus scirpaceus

[Show full abstract] of the season did not shift. As a result, the breeding season is now longer increasing re-nesting opportunities. Individuals are able to re-nest 4–5 times, which might have important implications for the species. It was also found that in warmer seasons the population suffered fewer nest losses. Both factors, higher re-nesting potential and a trend toward fewer losses, should lead to increased fitness of individuals in the studied population.

Wintering space use and site fidelity in a nomadic species, the snowy owl

Using 21 females tracked by satellite telemetry between 2007 and 2016, we 1) assessed how space use patterns in winter varied according to the type of environment (marine vs terrestrial), latitudinal zone (Arctic vs temperate), local snow conditions and lemming densities and 2) investigated winter habitat and site fidelity. Our results confirmed a high inter-individual variation in patterns of habitat use by wintering snowy owls. Highly-used areas were concentrated in the Arctic and in the marine and coastal environments. Owls wintering in the marine environment travelled over longer distances during the winter, had larger home ranges and these were divided in more smaller zones than individuals in terrestrial environments. Wintering home range sizes decreased with high winter lemming densities, use of the marine environment increased following high summer lemming densities, and a thick snow cover in autumn led to later settlement on the wintering ground. Contrary to expectations, snowy owls tended to make greater use of the marine environment when snow cover was thin. Snowy owls were highly consistent in their use of a given wintering environment and a specific latitudinal zone between years, but demonstrated flexibility in their space use and a modest site fidelity. The snowy owls’ consistency in wintering habitat use may provide them with advantages in terms of experience but their mobility and flexibility may help them to cope with changing environmental conditions at fine spatial scale.

The annual variability of the breeding performance of rodentivorous birds of prey has traditionally been explained in terms of annual fluctuations in rodent abundance. This paper presents data from the Siberian tundra showing that this relationship may not be so simple as generally thought. The data consist of parameters of small mammal population fluctuations (small mammal density (SMD), average ... [Show full abstract] body weight, species diversity and rate of change of species diversity), inter-specific competition and meteorological factors (mean temperature and snow melt date) during every stage of the breeding cycle of the rough-legged buzzard (Buteo lagopus). The density of breeding pairs was found to be correlated with the SMD, whereas the total number of territorial pairs including non-breeding ones could be most accurately predicted by a model incorporating both the SMD and the population density of a larger competitor, the snowy owl (Nyctea scandiaca). Clutch size showed no correlation with the SMD. The best-fit multiple regression model to predict clutch size includes only small mammal diversity and its rate of change as predictive factors. Number of nestlings and egg losses did not show any correlation with any of the prey-related or weather parameters. Although the total number of rough-legged buzzard fledglings produced per unit area showed a significant positive correlation with the SMD in a single-factor regression, the most accurate multiple regression model to predict overall reproductive output included only the rate of change of the small mammal species diversity. The number of offspring produced by the buzzards in a given area fluctuated synchronously with the SMD, but the cycle was significantly more consistent in amplitude in the predator as compared to the prey

Distribution and population fluctuations of wintering Snowy Owls (Nyctea scandiaca) in North America

Christmas Bird Count data from 1952 to 1981 were used to examine the geographic distribution and population fluctuations of wintering Snowy Owls (Nyctea scandiaca) in North America south of the breeding range. [Show full abstract] coasts, owl abundance averaged 10–100 times lower and varied dramatically from year to year. Numbers of Snowy Owls fluctuated synchronously within the east coast area, the west coast area, and possibly the Great Plains, but fluctuations were not synchronous among these three areas. Time-series analyses did not support the hypothesis of cyclic winter invasions. Earlier studies from eastern North America included only a small portion of the continental population of Snowy Owls and, consequently, their conclusions may have been biased. Our findings strongly suggest that Snowy Owls may not be cyclic invaders, but rather are regular migrants over much of their winter range.
