Methods:
The primary outcome was length of hospital stay, defined as the...
Background:
Regular physical activity (PA) has been postulated to improve, or at least maintain, immunity across the life span. However, the link between physical (in)activity and coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) remains to be established. This small-scale prospective cohort study is nested within a randomized controlled trial aimed to investig...
Background
Sarcopenia plays a central role in the development of frailty syndrome. Nutrition and exercise are cornerstone strategies to mitigate the transition to frailty; however, there is a paucity of evidence for which dietary and exercise strategies are effective.
Objective
This large, multifactorial trial investigated the efficacy of differen...
Background:
Vitamin D acts as a mediator in the immune system regulating antiviral mechanisms and inflammatory processes. Vitamin D insufficiency has been suggested as a potential risk factor for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, although its impact on the prognosis of hospitalized patients with coronavirus di...
Histidine-containing dipeptides (HCDs) are abundantly expressed in striated muscles. Although important properties have been ascribed to HCDs, including H⁺ buffering, regulation of Ca²⁺ transients and protection against oxidative stress, it remains unknown whether they play relevant functions in vivo. To investigate the in vivo roles of HCDs, we de...
Background
Acute protein turnover studies suggest lower anabolic response after ingestion of plant vs. animal proteins. However, the effects of an exclusively plant-based protein diet on resistance training-induced adaptations are under investigation.
Objective
To investigate the effects of dietary protein source [exclusively plant-based vs. mixed...

Aging is accompanied by the inability to optimally respond to anabolic stimulus of nutrition, with consequent loss of muscle mass and functionality. It has been speculated that not only total protein intake, but also the per meal protein dose may have important implications to protein balance and, hence, muscle mass in middle-aged and older adults,...
To test whether high insulin influence the transport of β-alanine into skeletal muscle at either saturating or sub-saturating β-alanine concentrations, we conducted two studies whereby β-alanine and insulin concentrations were controlled. 1) 12 men received supraphysiological amounts of β-alanine intravenously (0.11g·kg·min ⁻¹ for 150min) along wit...
Background:
Frailty is a multifactorial geriatric syndrome characterized by progressive decline in health and associated with decreased muscle mass, strength, and functional capacity. Resistance training (RT) combined with protein or amino acids supplementation has been shown to be promising for mitigating age-related impairments.
Aim:
To invest...
Exercise has been overlooked as a potential therapy in chronic kidney disease (CKD), mainly due to a lack of understanding on its safety aspects. Notably, there is no data on renal function after exercise in CKD considering its stages. We investigated the acute effects of a 30-minute moderate-intensity aerobic exercise bout on glomerular filtration...
Creatine supplementation has been associated with increased cancer risk.
