Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate plasmid profiles and antibiotic resistance patterns of multidrug resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains isolated from different clinical specimens in Jordan. Methodology and results: Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains were isolated from different clinical specimens from different hospitals and primary he...

Ziziphus spina-christi has been used in traditional herbal medicine for the treatment of fever and inflammatory conditions. However, few studies had assessed its toxicological effects. This study was designed to investigate the effect of ethanolic leaf extract of Z. spina-christi on biochemical markers of kidney and liver functions. Fourteen male W...

Background and Objective: Anti-microbial agents, specially anti-biotics are becoming less potent against microbial infections due to the development of resistance. The need to find new agents never been more pressing. Natural products such as plant extracts are emerging as possible replacement for the outdated anti-biotics. The overall aims of this...

The aim of this project is to study the molecular characteristics of blaTEM-1 gene, and the associated ampicillin resistance mechanisms present in E. coli in north Jordan. In this study, 150 unrelated Escherichia coli bacterial samples were isolated from different clinical sources (urine, blood, pus and abscess) and tested for their susceptibility...

The aims of this study were to investigate antibiotic resistance patterns and plasmid profile of antibiotic resistant Staphylococcus strains isolated from clinical specimens, and to find out a possible relationship between plasmids profile and antibiotic sensitivity patterns. Staphylococcus strains were isolated from different clinical specimens fr...

In this study we investigated the effect of the new antitumor complex trans-[RuLCl ]H.4H O (RAD) on cultured TG cells (a human ovarian cell line), 2 2 we found that RAD was cytotoxic to these cells. RAD was shown to interact with DNAof these tumour cells causing damage which was assessed by the comet assay. This interaction was causing a modificati...

ABSTRACT This study was carried out to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites and their seasonal variation in northern Jordan. A total of 21 906 stool samples were collected over a period of 4 years (2009– 2013) from 5 government hospitals in 3 cities. Samples were processed and examined microscopically and by concentration methods. Paras...

Aims: The primary aims of this study were to evaluate the total phenolic content and in vitro antioxidant activity of three different leaves extracts (methanolic, ethanolic and aqueous) of Ziziphus spins-christi grown in Jordan. Methods: Total phenolic content of the methanolic, ethanolic and aqueous extracts of the leaves of Ziziphus spins-christi...

Aim: The primary aims of this study were to investigate antibiotic resistance patterns and plasmid profile of antibiotic resistant Escherichia coli isolated from clinical specimens, and to find out a possible correlation between plasmids and antibiotic sensitivity patterns. Methodology: Unrelated E. coli strains were isolated from different clinica...

Objective: To determine the prevalence, genetic relatedness, and pattern of antimicrobial susceptibility in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) (MRSA) isolated from household dogs, farm dogs, and stray dogs, compared to isolates from their associated personnel. Methods: MRSA was isolated from 250 nasal swabs (150 swabs from dogs...

The aims of this work were to investigate the antimicrobial pattern and plasmid profile of different antibiotic resistant Salmonella species isolated from clinical samples and to find a possible relationship between resistance patterns and plasmid profile. Salmonella isolates were tested against 12 commonly used antimicrobial agents using the disc...

Background Expression of Epstein-Barr virus Latent Member Protein-1 (EBV LMP-1) and loss of P16 protein expression are documented in lymphoma, indicating a relationship between them, but this relationship is not clear and sometimes contradictory. Thus, this study was conducted to examine the relationship between the loss of P16 and EBV LMP-1 expres...

The aim of this study was to estimate the frequency of EBV infection in Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (HL) and Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (NHL) occurring in Jordanian patients. A total of 55 patients with lymphoma were examined. The diagnosis was confirmed by staining the slides of these cases with hematoxylin and eosin. The presence of EBV was detected by immuno...

The objective of this study was to assess the antibacterial and antioxidant activities of methanolic extracts obtained from aerial parts of four medicinal plants: Achillea fragrantissima , Teucrium polium L., Rosmarinus officinalis and Alhgi graecorum . Both broth dilution and disc diffusion methods were used to assess the antibacterial activity of...

P16/INK4A is tumor suppressor protein that plays a critical role in cell cycle regulation. Loss of P16 protein expression has been implicated in pathogenesis of many cancers, including lymphoma. Therefore, we sought to investigate if loss of P16 protein expression is associated with lymphoma and/or any specific lymphoma subtypes (Hodgkin's lymphoma...

Problem statement: Hospital cleanleness and hygene are consederd among the most important aspects of clinical success and in preventing nosocomial infections. In this study we will address the problem of effectiveness of commonly used chemical agents in cleaning and disinfection in hospitals of north Jordan. For evaluating the effectiveness of chem...

The primary aim of this study was to determine the incidents of pseudomonas aeruginosa in post-operative wound infection and its sensitivity pattern to commonly used antibiotics. During a period of six months between February to December, 2005, 115 specimens were collected from King Abdullah University Hospital, Princess Basma Hospital, Princess Ba...

Contamination of biological evidence with non-human DNA complicates forensic analysis and necessitates the use of sets of primers that show high specificity for human DNA. We report here the analysis of DNA from 15 vertebrate animals in addition to that of humans (males and females) using the PowerPlex® 16 system to assess its specificit...

To establish a genetic database of the African-Jordanian population for forensic and paternity testing purposes. Allelic distribution at fifteen short tandem repeat (STR) loci was determined for 95 healthy unrelated African-Jordanians. The 15 autosomal STR loci, included within the GenePrint PowerPlex 16 system, were amplified from the subset of th...

The effect of different concentrations (0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8 mg/ml) of sodium nitrite on the anti-tumor activity of natural killer (NK) cells isolated from human peripheral blood was examined. Sodium nitrite induced significant inhibition (25.3-66.6%) of NK cell activity against WEHI-164 cells. This reduction in NK cell cytotoxicity was found...

Cystic fibrosis (CF) results from mutations in the gene encoding the CF transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) which is a regulated chloride channel. The deltaF508 mutation prevents the post-translational glycosylation and membrane insertion of the protein. Severe disease follows, with the formation of a viscous mucus and subsequent chronic bac...
