How to activate Barium oxide catalyst?

what is the procedure for activation of barium oxide catalyst.
can we heat the sample directly or we need to use nitrogen atmosphere?

Calcium carbide used as oxygen scavengers. Can we used it in muffle furnace at high temperature? If we heat it in furnace at about 1100 degree Celsius temperature than is it stable at that point? What products are expected to produce?
