Why is umbilical cord blood such an important source for studying the prenatal status of the immune system?

The reviewer of the paper I like to publish asked why it is crucial to examine umbilical cord blood when most cells are still undifferentiated and can undergo further changes influenced by environmental factors?
I already know that cord blood provides a unique insight into prenatal immune status and early immune imprinting. Is there anyone who can name a good source that addresses this issue?
Thanks for your help!
