May I recommend a literature search on "personal epistemology" in Google Scholar. There has been quite a bit written about this, about how a student learns changes during their progress at university. Some of the classics are from Hofel, Pintrich, Elliott, Schommer-Aikins and Chan (not necessarily together).

Hi! I also believe that the teaching technology is an importance aspect. It is now possible to flip the classroom, to use clickers to check that the students understand key concepts before starting a new topic, to ask the students to work in small groups, etc. It might be helpful to have a look at the different topics covered at the last Conference of the American Economic Association on Teaching and Education Research.
