What is criteria for selecting of slot's shape on the patch for multi band or single band antenna?

Hello everyone
What are criteria for selecting of slot's shape on the patch for multi band or single band antenna? How shape of slot on the patch is decided? For any shape selection there is any proper rule. For example U-slot, E-slot, H-slot etc or any type shape, why this shape chosen for antenna design? For shape selection any logic behind this or any proper method for selection of slot’s shape on the patch.

Somehow, you ,may predict the position of the slots where to incorporate first by observing the surface current distribution on the patch surface, but exact dimensions of the slots can be predicted, its depends on the total area on the patch antenna. other than common E or U shaped, you may try with loop shaped slots, semi circular slots, DGS also helps in achieving multiband operation with good IBW. But the ratio of defected area to total area must be maintain logically because depending on the shape and dimensions of the defect on the ground plane, the shielded current distribution in the ground plane is disturbed which results in a controlled excitation and propagation of the electromagnetic waves through the substrate layer, thus control resonance.

the upper shape of the patch antenna is subject to the operational freq and bandwidth. Depending upon your application you can pickup any shape, but single antenna is not capable of providing narrow beam so always we prefer arrays of it.but as per my knowledge no thumb rule for antenna design you should start with rectangular patch and design an antenna by proper chosen w, d and h. After that you can modify your design.

For U-shape slot please refer this paper "AN INTEGRATED WIDEBAND MULTIFUNCTIONAL ANTENNA USING A MICROSTRIP PATCH WITH TWO U-SLOTS".
it depends upon the application you are using the antenna for. May be you require high bandwidth but low gain and vice versa. So, no shape is the perfect one.
