If you have access to a good library, I highly recommend a "classic" ... James E. Vance "Capturing the Horizon: The Historical Geography of Transportation." The early chapters on roads (leading to other forms of transport technology) are excellent. Vance's work is detailed and empirical but it has also inspired generalizations.

"the rise and fall of infrastructure" by Grubler is a relevant source of information for your topic. Contains reconstruction of time series on the long run on the evolution of various transport modes.

Does the Journal of Transport History (Manchester University Press) give anything useful?
'Ways of the World' by M.G. Lay (ISBN 1 875368 05 1) includes references to the US and miscellaneous examples from around the world. Otherwise, most of my library refers to Britain or Australia.

Here are my equations: Y = (a + b*ln(X))^2 or X = exp((Y^(1/2)-a)/b)
Y is the GDP per capita in US$, X is the overall logistics performance score. Take a = -244.29 and b = +327.83 Please take a look at Logistics performance scores at (http://lpisurvey.worldbank.org)
Logistics performance score: 1 through 5 --- 1: worst performing, 5:best performing
