The genus Festuca and allied genera for a new critical flora of Italy. II. The genus Leucopoa and Drymochloa (Poaceae) - A review of the knowledge concerning the genera Leucopoa and Drymochloa in Italy is here presented. Nine species are treated. A new taxonomical combinations (Leucopoa spectabilis subsp. croatica) is published. For each species th...

Calcium (Ca ²⁺ ) may be involved in plant tolerance to heat stress by regulating antioxidant metabolism or/and water relations. This study was designed to examine whether external Ca ²⁺ treatment would improve heat tolerance in two C 3 , cool‐season grass species, tall fescue ( Festuca arundinacea L.) and Kentucky bluegrass ( Poa pratensis L.), and...

The introgression of genetic variation from related species into crops provides an important route by which superior plant varieties can be produced. The primary aim of introgression involves the transfer of a small chromosome segment from a related species into a chromosome of a crop species (via recombination at meiosis) to generate an interspeci...

... exaltata was known for only two sites: Insugherata Nature Reserve (Monte Arsiccio) in the center of Rome, and the San Vittorino gorge on the outskirts of Roma in the municipality of Tivoli [90,116]. However, Foggi et al. [117] in a recent review on Festuca and allied genera have identified the specimens from San Vittorino and from Monte Arsiccio as D. sylvatica (Pollich) Holub, a species with central European distribution. The conclusions of these authors would suggest exclusion of this taxon from the regional flora. ...

The tradition of floristic studies in Italy has made it possible to obtain a good knowledge of plant diversity both on a national and regional scale. However, the lack of knowledge for some areas, advances in plant systematics and human activities related to globalization, highlight the need for further studies aimed at improving floristic knowledge. In this paper, based on fieldwork and herbaria and literature surveys, we update the knowledge on the Italian vascular flora and analyze the floristic similarities between the administrative regions. Four taxa, all exotic, were recorded for the first time in Italy and Europe. In detail, Elaeodendron croceum, Kalanchoë blossfeldiana, and Sedum spathulifolium var. spathulifolium were found as casual aliens, while Oxalis brasiliensis was reported as historical record based on some herbarium specimens. Furthermore, Kalanchoë laxiflora was confirmed as a casual alien species for Italy and Europe. Status changes for some taxa were proposed at both national and regional levels, as well as many taxa were reported as new or confirmed at the regional level. Currently the Italian vascular flora comprises 9150 taxa of which 7547 are native (of which 1598 are Italian endemics) and 1603 are exotic at the national level. The multivariate analysis of updated floristic data on a regional scale showed a clear distribution along the latitudinal gradient, in accordance with the natural geographical location of the regions in Italy. This pattern of plants distribution was not affected by the introduction of alien species. Despite some taxonomic and methodological issues which are still open, the data obtained confirm the important role of floristic investigations in the field and in herbaria, as well as the collaborative approach among botanists, in order to improve the knowledge of the Italian and European vascular flora.
... In recent years, an enormous number of floristic studies have been published, the major ones concerning large portions of the Italian territory, such as the Cilento (Moggi 2002), Lazio (Anzalone et al. 2010), Calabria (Bernardo et al. 2011), Emilia-Romagna (Alessandrini 2012), and the Province of Lucca (Pierini and Peruzzi 2014). Important taxonomic contributions have also appeared in the journal, such as those on Festuca L. and allied genera (Foggi et al. 2007(Foggi et al. , 2010, Alchemilla L. (Fröhner et al. 2012), and Polygala L. (Arrigoni 2014). ...
... The Italian Botanical society's attractive project aimed at writing a new Italian flora has stimulated taxonomical revisions, ecological studies and phytogeographical studies on some critical genera (Selvi & Bigazzi 1998;Signorini & Foggi 1998;Catonica 2001;Foggi et al. 2010;Peruzzi 2010) including the genus Tamarix L. This critical genus is notably difficult to interpret taxonomically and includes some species of particular interest for the recently investigated issue of the non-native vascular flora of Italy (Celesti-Grapow et al. 2009, 2010. ...

A floristic research on the gorge of "Fiumara dei Bagni", a stream located on the tyrrhenian side of the Calabrian coastal range, was carried out in order to provide a first contribution to the floristic knowledge of this extensive mountainous area, still not much explored. The vascular flora consists of 439 taxa, belonging to 293 genera and 80 families. The wet, shady microclimate into the gorge greatly influences the flora, privileging the hemicryptophytes and, more in general, perennials; therefore, the presence of therophytes is only related to fallow land, roadsides and other synanthropic areas located near to Terme Luigiane. On the whole, 12 taxa are new for the Catena Costiera, some of remarkable phytogeografic interest for this area, like Allosorus tinaei and Ophioglossum lusitanicum.

The census of the loci classici of 1,400 Italian endemic vascular plants (i.e. not thriving elsewhere with the exception of Corsica and Malta) is here presented and described. The effective place of publication of accepted names, basionyms and homotypic synonyms were identified and critically verified. This often resulted in some change in authorship attribution and, in seven cases, in validation problems (Asperula cynanchica var. lactea var. nov., A. lactea comb. nov., Biscutella laevigata subsp. raffaelliana subsp. nov., Ferulago nodosa subsp. geniculata comb. & stat. nov., Limonium tineoi comb. nov., L. usticanum sp. nov., Noccaea torreana comb. nov.). The geographic information on the loci classici was excerpted from the protologues, as well as information on typification for the taxa described before 1 January 1958. The names without holotype are 796. For 347 names a lecto- or neo-typification is available in literature, while 449 currently accepted taxa still need of type designation.

During the research a total of 507 units were recorded; 11 units resulted new records for Calabria and 5 were confirmed for the regional flora.
