Nutrient‐poor waters with small Utricularia species have been unknown in most of southern Europe and the Balkans. All the more notable are occurrences of Utricularia ochroleuca and Utricularia minor in north Greece. The records presented in this paper extend the known southeast European distribution boundaries of both species southward, and constitute U. ochroleuca a new species to Greece and southern Europe. U. ochroleuca was found in small peaty pools and seepage sites with base‐poor water within subalpine fens and headwaters, U. minor in very shallow base‐containing waters of spring brooks in upper montane ophiolite environments. The plant species composition of the Utricularia vegetation and its habitats are described. The pertinent vegetation types – Utricularietum ochroleucae and Scorpidio‐Utricularietum, respectively, as well as their higher‐ranking syntaxa – are new to Greece and the Balkans. The vegetation with U. ochroleuca forms part of the Annex I habitat type 3160 of the EU Habitats Directive, which is also new to Greece. Nature conservation status and management conditions of the detected plant communities and habitats with Utricularia in northern Greece are discussed.

The Grecian juniper silvopastoral woodland is considered very rare in the European context. It is restricted in north-western Greece (Prespa basin), and the type of habitat they support is a priority one, according to the EU Directive 92/43/EEC. Last decades, due to abandonment of traditional practices (fuel-wood cutting and livestock grazing) the woodland appears to decline. The most important threat for the Prespa juniper woodland seems to be the invasion of deciduous broad-leaved species. The LIFE+ JunEx project set in its mail goals the restoration of the woodland through specific concrete actions that support and promote the traditional uses of woodland resources, like grazing. The purpose of the study was to explore the views of social and institutional groups operating around the silvopastoral woodland and the formulation of measures that contribute to its ecological restoration. The first phase of the research (February 2014) was conducted with questionnaires addressed to social groups in the region. It was found that the main factors forming the perception of social groups are (a) the advantages and benefits of the habitat type (15.8%), (b) threats (14.9%), (c) interdisciplinary complementarity of livestock management and Forestry (9.2%), (d) cost effectiveness (8.6%), (e) present condition (8.6%), and (f) direct degradation of wood-standing capital (7.5%). The second phase of the research (June 2016) included a simulation exercise on the institutional environment of the LIFE+ JunEx project actions and held within a summer school. It was found that common factors affect the perception of societal and institutional groups with emphasis on the economic benefits and the interdisciplinary complementarity of livestock management and forestry.

Chapter
Dry and littoral grasslands, shrublands and traditional silvopastoral systems form a major land use on the mountains of Prespa National Park, northwestern Greece, an area with exceptional biodiversity located on the borders with Albania and North Macedonia. On altitudes ranging from 850 to 2330 m a.s.l. and geological substrates of granite, limestone and metamorphic origins, extensive grazing has been shaping the landscapes of the area, particularly affecting 19 out of the 51 habitat types recorded in the Park and its surrounding area according to the European Unions’ Natura 2000 network typology (Directive 92/43/EEC). Over the last years, sheep and goat numbers are drastically reduced, numbers of beef cattle are increasing, and evidence of under- or over-grazing are observed at various sites mainly due to lack or mispositioning of basic infrastructure for grazers. These facts unquestionably affect the dynamics of grazing-dependent habitat types in the study area, including four priority ones, i.e. the “Pseudo-steppes with grasses and annuals of the Thero-Brachypodietea”, the “Species-rich Nardus grasslands on siliceous substrates in mountain areas”, the “Pannonic sand steppes” and the “Endemic forests with Juniperus spp.”. The present contribution discusses (a) the management practices needed to maintain good conservation status of rangelands in the Park and its surrounding area, and (b) the survey and monitoring techniques to apply in order to identify effects on habitat types caused by the changing grazing schemes.

The bat survey in the Greek part of the Prespa basin in 2018–2020 confirmed, despite the limited methods used, its extraordinary importance for bat diversity. The study documented the presence of 22 bat forms (20 species) by acoustic surveys and a favourable status of some roosts including several nursery colonies. Three of the recorded species are here reported for the first time, Eptesicus nilssonii (the first record for Greece), Nyctalus lasiopterus, and Barbastella barbastellus, however, confirmation by a capture or direct observation of an individual is still needed. The collected data showed that bats do not avoid the urbanized parts of the study area and underlined the importance of old houses, churches, and ruins providing suitable roosting and foraging opportunities. The measurements of light pollution in villages revealed a high amount of light diffusion caused by the used type of shieldless luminaires. Heat maps of light intensity revealed a slightly higher bat activity in almost all villages in 2020, upon the situation in 2018. Bat passes were recorded not only in the peripheries of the highest illumination zones but also inside them, although some of the bat passes may belong to bats flying enough in the dark above the light levels of the installed lamps. The study provides application of mitigation actions for the Municipality of Prespa with the main aim to reduce the current level of the ALAN (Artificial Light At Night).
