... During a floristic survey in areas of Semideciduous Seasonal Forest in the Serra de Itacoatiara, Ceará state, V. orinocensis Kunth was identified and recorded for the first time from the state. It had been recorded in the Northeast Region of Brazil from the states of Bahia, Maranhão, Paraíba, and Pernambuco, covering areas of both Amazon and Atlantic Forests (Monteiro et al. 2018;Flora do Brasil 2020). ...
... According to Flora do Brasil (2020) and considering the vegetation classification of Ceará state (Moro et al. 2015), seven species of Vitex are widely distributed in different vegetation types in the state. The rocky-outcrop habitat where we report Vitex orinocensiswas also mentioned by Monteiro et al. (2018) for Paraíba state, confirming that this species grows on rocky outcrop in the Atlantic Forest. Considering its disjunct distribution between the Amazon and Atlantic Forests, the occurrence of V. orinocensis in upland forest may be suport the hypothesis that these ecosystems constitute refuges for Atlantic Forest species, whose ancestors were continuously distributed between these two domains during the Pleistocene glacial periods (Tabarelli and Santos 2004; Batalha-Filho and Miyaki 2014). ...

Lamiaceae Martinov is the sixth largest family of Angiosperms, containing about 240 genera and 7200 species. In Brazil it also presents high richness, represented by 70 genera and approximately 590 species. Despite this, it is a relatively underrepresented family in regional floristic studies. The objective of this work was to carry out the floristics and taxonomy of the Lamiaceae species occurring in the municipality of Alagoinhas, Bahia, Brazil. The survey was carried out both by collecting botanical material and by consulting materials deposited in herbarium collections in the region, such as HUNEB and HUEFS. The family is represented in the municipality by 16 species distributed in 13 genera and 4 tribes. Among these species, Mesosphaerum caatingense stands out, which had its first record for the state of Bahia and for the Atlantic Forest carried out in this work. Descriptions, field photographs, comments on the species and an identification key are provided.

Vitex comprises c. 250 species in a pantropical distribution, with 34 species recognised for Brazil. During fieldwork in remnants of the Atlantic Forest showing vegetation associated with inselbergs in the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil, a unique, unmatched unifoliolate species of Vitex was found. Based on herbaria consultation and literature review, we propose this as a new species, Vitex pomerana. The new species is unique in the genus due to the presence of unifoliolate leaves, a rare feature in the genus, together with brochidodromous venation of leaflets, dorsifixed anthers, shape and size of leaflets, and petiole and peduncle sizes. We compared the new species with V. gardneriana and V. snethlagiana, the only two other unifoliolate-leaved Vitex species occurring in Brazil. The new species is known from only a few individuals so far and is micro endemic to a biodiversity hotspot that suffers from habitat loss and degradation, and would likely be considered Endangered (EN), based on the criteria of the IUCN red list. This finding increases the number of angiosperm species endemic to the Atlantic Forest and inselbergs in the state of Espírito Santo and highlights the urgency of conserving this highly threatened vegetation.

This pest is usually managed in Brazil through preventive spraying of pesticides , which may lead to problems like pest resistance, environmental contamination, outbreaks of secondary pests, mortality of natural enemies and risks to human health Lima et al., 2016;Oliveira et al., 2017;Monteiro et al., 2018). ...

Coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) is an important cash crop for Asia, Africa and tropical America. The coconut mite, Aceria guerreronis Keifer (Acari: Eriophyidae) is a major coconut pest, inflicting heavy damage to fruits, thereby reducing yields and farmers profitability. Previous research has demonstrated that high contents of sesquiterpenes compounds present in the essential oil of Vitex gardneriana Schauer (Lamiaceae) (EOVG) showed high potential to control A. guerreronis. Systems stabilized by surfactants, such as microemulsions (MEs), are promising to carry essential oils due to their solubilization and protection properties, generally allow for greater spreadability, wettability and have thermodynamic stability and lower viscosity. Here, we compared the acaricidal activity of MEs containing EOVG a based cottonseed oil (CO) and mineral oil (MO) as different oily phases. MEs formulations were obtained through the pseudoternary phase diagram using a 1:1 mixture of polysorbate 80: propylene glycol as surfactant and co-surfactant, respectively, and CO and MO as oily phases and water as aqueous phase. The MEs were characterized by polarized light microscopy, dynamic light scattering as well as by rheological behavior. Results based on concentration-mortality bioassays, showed that the toxicity of ME-CO containing EOVG was higher (LC50 = 195 ppm) in comparison with ME-CO without EOVG (LC50 = 669 ppm). Similarly, adding EOVG to ME-MO increased the toxicity further (LC50 = 120 ppm). Moreover, the LC50 of ME with and without EOVG for A. guerreronis was higher than the LC50 determined for the EOVG alone (LC50 = 888 ppm). The MEs containing EOVG in their LC80 and mainly LC50, repelled the mite. Overall, our results indicate that the MEs hold potential for controlling A. guerreronis, especially when EOVG was added with both oil phases.

Lamiaceae is one of the largest families of angiosperms and is classified into 12 subfamilies that are composed of 295 genera and 7775 species. It presents a variety of secondary metabolites such as diterpenes that are commonly found in their species, and some of them are known to be chemotaxonomic markers. The aim of this work was to construct a database of diterpenes and to use it to perform a chemotaxonomic analysis among the subfamilies of Lamiaceae, using molecular descriptors and self-organizing maps (SOMs). The 4115 different diterpenes corresponding to 6386 botanical occurrences, which are distributed in eight subfamilies, 66 genera, 639 different species and 4880 geographical locations, were added to SistematX. Molecular descriptors of diterpenes and their respective botanical occurrences were used to generate the SOMs. In all obtained maps, a match rate higher than 80% was observed, demonstrating a separation of the Lamiaceae subfamilies, corroborating with the morphological and molecular data proposed by Li et al. Therefore, through this chemotaxonomic study, we can predict the localization of a diterpene in a subfamily and assist in the search for secondary metabolites with specific structural characteristics, such as compounds with potential biological activity.
