. Search operations and browsing facilities over an XML document database require special support at the physical level. Typical search operations involve path queries. This paper proposes a hierarchical access method to support such operations and to facilitate browsing. It advocates the idea of searching large XML collections by administering eff...

Learning Content Management System (LCMS) supports e-learning applications with storage and efficient access for e-Learning Objects (LOs). In order to foster LCMS adoption by the e-learning community, an important issue is to bring course modelling to the realm of the LCMS. In this paper, we describe the Repository of Objects with Semantic Access (...

Vast information sources like the Internet are very hard to browse or search, and using existing tools might be some-times frustrating for many people. A number of techniques has been proposed to deliver user-oriented solutions. In this paper we present how query refinement, collabora-tive filtering and faceted browsing can be enriched with so-cial...

The retrieval of complex multimedia items such as SGML-structured texts can be facilitated by means of a formal representation of knowledge about these data. These information sources must be aggregated dynamically at the time of query processing. In this paper, an interactive, probabilistic retrieval system is pr oposed, comprising an extended Bay...

Top-k spatial preference queries rank objects based on the score of feature objects in their spatial neighborhood. Top-k preference queries are crucial for a wide range of location based services such as hotel browsing and apartment searching. In recent years, a lot of research has been conducted on processing of top-k spatial preference queries in...

Mobile video is quickly becoming a mass consumer phenomenon. More and more people are using their smartphones to search and browse video content while on the move. In this paper, we have developed an innovative instant mobile video search system through which users can discover videos by simply pointing their phones at a screen to capture a very fe...

... As described earlier in the knowledge representation and the definition of cases subsections, a metaunit is a small tree composed of the merged units (the nodes). Thus, the hierarchical measure determines the similarity between two metaunits according to their associated tree structures and considers the level of abstraction, the parent nodes, the leaf nodes, and every function of the nodes [20]. ...

An approach to improve the management of complexity during the redesign of technical processes is proposed. The approach consists of two abstract steps. In the first step, model-based reasoning is used to generate automatically alternative representations of an existing process at several levels of abstraction. In the second step, process alternatives are generated through the application of case-based reasoning. The key point of our framework is the modeling approach, which is an extension of the Multimodeling and Multilevel Flow Modeling methodologies. These, together with a systematic design methodology, are used to represent a process hierarchically, thus improving the identification of analogous equipment/sections from different processes. The hierarchical representation results in sets of equipment/sections organized according to their functions and intentions. A case-based reasoning system then retrieves from a library of cases similar equipment/sections to the one selected by the user. The final output is a set of equipment/sections ordered according to their similarity. Human intervention is necessary to adapt the most promising case within the original process.
... Integrating IR and XML search techniques could enable more sophisticated search on the structure as well as the content of the documents. Some of the recent XML-IR proposals [6,8,11,4,2] focus on indexing for improving the execution of simple IR-like queries. Other approaches [9,15,25] are based on soft computing techniques to model uncertainty. ...

This paper proposes a method of ranking XML documents with respect to an Information Retrieval query by means of fuzzy logic. The proposed method allows imprecise queries to be evaluated against an XML document collection and it provides a model of ranking XML documents. In addition the proposed method enables sophisticated ranking of documents by employing proximity measures and the concept of editing (Levenshtein) distance between terms or XML paths.

Due the popularity of XML, an increasingly large amount of business transactions encoded in XML have been exchanged on-line. Currently there are two approaches to process and manage these XML data. One is to store them in relational databases, and the other is to store them in recently-developed native XML databases. There is no conclusion yet as to which approach suits better for contemporary business information systems. Also, the effectiveness of native XML databases used in daily operational systems has not been completely investigated. Therefore, in this paper, we provide: (1) a complete and systematic survey of the current development and challenges of processing XML data in relational and native XML databases, (2) a useful benchmark for IT practitioners who need to process XML data effectively, (3) experimental results and detailed analysis which reveal several interesting tips that can be helpful to XML document designers, and (4) a conclusion, based on the findings of using native XML databases in EDI processes, that it is practical to use native XML databases for daily operations although our experimental results showed that relational database systems outperform native XML databases in processing XML data.

Electronic commerce is an emerging trade model under dramatically rapid development. So far, enormous numbers of business transactions have been conducted over the Internet. It is believed that extensible markup language (XML) is the best layout format for exchanging messages over the Internet. Since XML developers can define their own elements, it is common that various elements may be used to illustrate the same thing or one element name is used to describe different things. This makes it extremely difficult to exchange XML documents among businesses, not to mention redundant investments in the design of XML documents. If a business can obtain a document schema similar to the one that is currently being used and modify the schema to fit its needs, then not only can the development costs be reduced, but also the redundancy in the design of XML documents can be saved. Furthermore, the difficulty in data interchanges among trading partners can be alleviated. To solve the problems, many well-known international organizations have joined forces to develop XML repositories in the hope of increasing reusability of collected document schemata. Unfortunately, there is scarcely any efficient search mechanism provided for these XML repositories. In this paper, by taking advantage of the concept of ontology and the neural network techniques, we shall propose and implement a search engine, called XDSearch, for XML document schemata. XDSearch allows developers to easily and quickly locate document schemata in an XML repository as close to what they need as possible.
