Zygodon bistratus, a new species from Spain in the Iberian Peninsula is described. The small size, partially bistratose leaf lamina and the upper laminal cells with tall, forked papillae are distinctive features for this species.

A new genus and species, Balogheremaeus chimaera gen. et sp. n. is described after a specimen found in a dry riverbed in Southeastern Spain. A comparison with the rest of the family Plateremaeidae is made. The new genus and species is differenciated from the rest of the family Plateremaeidae due to its smaller size, its convex notogaster, the prese...

Two species of Cenomanocarcinus (Cenomanocarcinidae) from the late Albian and Turonian of Spain are reported herein, increasing the number of Iberian Cenomanocarcinus species. Likewise, Necrocarcinus woodwardii (Necrocarcinidae) is reported for the first time in the Iberian Peninsula and constitutes the southernmost record for the species. As well,...

Centipede biodiversity in eucalyptus plantations is assessed for the first time in northern Spain, thus expanding the ecological knowledge of 11 taxa found dwelling in these non-native forests. Sampling activities were carried out in the council of Vegadeo (Asturias), specifically in the villages of Besedo and Piantón, where centipedes were hand co...

Molecular evolution of the large subunit of the RuBisCO enzyme is understudied in early diverging land plants. These groups show morphological and eco-physiological adaptations to the uneven and intermittent distribution of water in the terrestrial environment. This might have prompted a continuous fine-tuning of RuBisCO under a selective pressure modifying the species-specific optima for photosynthesis in contrasting microdistributions and environmental niches. To gain a better insight into the molecular evolution of RuBisCO large subunits, the aim of this study was to assess the pattern of evolutionary change in the amino acid residues in a monophyletic group of Bryophyta (Orthotrichaceae). Tests for positive, neutral, or purifying selection at the amino acid level were assessed by comparing rates (ω) of non-synonymous (dN) and synonymous (dS) nucleotide substitutions along a Maximum Likelihood phylogenetic tree. Molecular adaptation tests using likelihood ratio tests, reconstruction of ancestral amino acid sites, and intra-protein coevolution analyses were performed. Variable amino acid sites (39) were unevenly distributed across the LSU. The residues are located on rbcL sites that are highly variable in higher plants and close to key regions implying dimer–dimer (L2L2), RuBisCO-activase interactions, and conformational functions during catalysis. Ten rbcL sites (32, 33, 91, 230, 247, 251, 255, 424, 449 and 475) have been identified by the Bayesian Empirical Bayes inference to be under positive selection and under adaptive evolution under the M8 model. The pattern of amino acid variation suggests that it is not lineage specific, but rather representative of a case of convergent evolution, suggesting recurrent changes that potentially favor the same amino acid substitutions that are likely optimized the RuBisCO activity.

A new epiphytic moss, Zygodon catarinoi C. García, F. Lara, Sérgio and Sim-Sim, was recorded from Libya for the first time. The new species is characterized by ovate to elliptic gemmae, narrowly lanceolate, loosely erect leaves, the abaxial surface of the costae in the distal 1/3-1/2 of the leaf covered with forked papillae, leaf lamina bistratose, rudimentary peristome and with cucullate smooth calyptra. This study is to collected the genus Zygodon growing on trunks of some trees in Al-Jebel Al-Akhdar (Libya) throughout the winter season (January-March, 2007) and May 2008, in order to revision the genus in Libya. The taxa moss flora of Libya after this record became 108.

The genus Zygodon Hook. & Taylor is revised for southern South America (Andean-Patagonian and Fuegian regions). Thirteen taxa (twelve species and one variety) are recognized as occurring in the region: Z. bartramioides Malta, Z. chilensis Calabrese & F. Lara, Z. hookeri Hampe var. hookeri, Z. hookeri var. leptobolax (Müll. Hal.) Calabrese comb. nov., Z. intermedius Bruch & Schimp., Z. jaffuelii Thér., Z. magellanicus Dusén ex Malta, Z. menziesii (Schwägr.) Arnott, Z. papillatus Mont., Z. pentastichus (Mont.) Müll. Hal., Z. pichinchensis (Taylor) Mitt., Z. reinwardtii (Hornsch.) Bruch & Schimp. and Z. obtusifolius Hook. All taxa previously considered to grow in southern South America were studied, and many were typified. Because of the biogeographical connections with other Southern Hemisphere landmasses, some taxa from other areas (e.g., Australasia or South Africa) were also considered. The studied taxa are a good representation of the genus as a whole, thus allowing one to conclude that Zygodon, worldwide, consists of three subgenera: subg. Zygodon, the species of which have papillose leaf cells that are flat as seen in cross-section, and that can be further divided in two sections, sect. Zygodon defined by leaf basal cells not in differentiated bands and seta distally dextrorse, and sect. Stenomitrium Mitt. with leaf basal cells disposed in differentiated alternating bands and seta distally sinistrorse; subg. Codonoblepharon (Schwägr.) Calabrese stat. nov. comprising species with smooth, flat leaf cells in cross-section; and subg. Obtusifolium (Malta) Calabrese stat. nov., including species with papillose, bulging leaf cells. For each of the accepted taxa, keys, descriptions, illustrations, a complete list of synonyms previously used in the study area (sometimes expanded with names from abroad), ecology, distribution maps, variability and differentiation from related taxa are provided. Study of the peristome of Zygodon with the SEM provides new data about its structure and ornamentation.

The genus Zygodon in the Iberian Peninsula is revised and six species are recognized: Zygodon catarinoi, Z. conoideus, Z. forsteri, Z. rupestris, Z. stirtonii and Z. viridissimus. A key, descriptions, illustrations and maps of each taxon are given. Zygodon stirtonii is reported for the Iberian Peninsula for the first time. Zygodon catarinoi and Z. bistratus are conspecific, and the former predates Z. bistratus by two days. Copyright ©2008 by The American Bryological and Lichenological Society, Inc.
